Oldsmobile Prices Reduced on Both Sixes and Eights Oldsmobile's price announcement on its 1937 cars is featured by a reduction in price on all enclosed models in the eight cylinder line and also a reduction on the popular four-door sedan and four-door touring sedan in the six cylinder line, according to a statement released today by Knox Motors of 406 So. Los Angeles, local Oldsmobile dealer. "List prices at Lansing on the new six begin at $685 and on the eight at $785," Knox said. "These new prices for 1937 are in keeping with Oldsmobile's basic policy of giving buyers all that is new and better at the lowest possible price." Knox pointed out that the new Oldsmobiles, both six and eight, are bigger and finer in every way. Both have new and larger engines which give increased power with greater economy. Both have longer wheelbase and stronger, more rugged chassis. And both cars offer bigger, roomier all-steel bodies for greater comfort and safety. In addition, the 1937 Oldsmobiles offer the latest in modern streamline styling. Both are entirely distinctive in appearance—different from each other, and different from anything else on the road. With all their new advancements and improvements, these new cars are priced to give the buyer the utmost in dollar-for-dollar value." Miss Shaw received the largest number of listener-votes after the contest finals last Monday night on the Don Lee network. As an award she was presented with a $500 check by the program sponsors, the California Chain Stores association. In addition, she is already being auditioned by the networks for other programs, and has had at least one studio screen test. To win, Miss Shaw first won her own community salute program, made up of Claremont and Pomona artists, with a prize of $50. Next she won in a semifinal program against other community winners, and at that time was awarded a $100 prize. Last week she attained the highest goal in the entire series of some 30 weeks. "California's Hour" is now in a new series, featuring salutes to the universities. The first university selected was U. C. L. A., which was saluted Monday. Next Monday Stanford will be the honored school, with six acts of student talent on the program. Of experiments in the use of equipment with bombs initiated under the super-regional Forester S. B. Several different materials such as types of containers and their contents, weather conditions, topography, and the kinds of forest cover, forest officers are unwilling to make any predictions as to the possibilities of success in combatting fires from the air. Only after a thorough study can it be determined just to what extent airplanes can be used on such work. As definite results are arrived at information will be given the press. Since 1920 the forest service has been using the conventional type of commercial plane for reconnaissance of large going fires, for movements of fire overhead, transportation of limited quantities of important supplies and equipment, detection of fires after a serious lightning concentration, and for observations during periods of smoky weather. They have not heretofore seriously used airplanes to combat the fires. TAKING A WALK Say, Daddy, what do they mean when they call a congressman a lame duck? Well now, Sonny, you started something. A lame duck is a guy who was defeated at the regular November 3rd election, but still held on until the following fourth of March, when the new congress went in. He was a bird who strutted around in full plumage from November to March, drawing his salary and hanging on by the skin of his teeth—but his official wings were clipped. He didn't amount to much, he had outlived his usefulness, but could quack. Instead of waiting until March 4th to organize they passed a new law making it Jan. 5. Then January 20th the new president will be inaugurated, the first time in the history of the country, instead of March 4th. Times are normal when people tell how much instead of how little they paid. Do you know ... that payroll checks totalling $304,606.64 were paid to Edison employees in this area alone last year? This money was spent for food, clothing, shelter and all the myriad items supplied by business and professional men of this community. A large proportion of the money you spend for Edison light and power flows back into your community in the form of payrolls and taxes.
