National Honer Won By Former County Teacher National honors were accorded Prof. Glenn Lukens, professor of ceramics in the college of architecture and fine arts of the university of Southern California and former head of the hand crafts department of Fullerton high school and junior college, with the announcement this week of his winning first prize in the 5th annual national competition of the Robineau Memorial exhibition. The annual contest was held in Syracuse, N. Y., and is sponsored by the American Ceramic society. Following its exhibition in Syracuse, the display will tour the United States and the Pacific coast before being sent to Denmark and the art centers of Europe. Lukens series of three glazed bowls were chosen among 400 contestants for their "vibrant singing qualities," according to the judges and are said to be typical examples of a new type of art which he has developed. "Known as the 'Southwest design,' Professor Lukens has found a freedom and spontaneity in color, line, and form, for which the west is becoming known over the United States," said Dean Arthur C. Weatherhead of the U. S. C. college. "I am naturally happy over such an honor," said Lukens, "but I owe much to the patience and encouragement of Louis E. Plummer, Fullerton high school and junior college principal, and to William T. Boyce, dean of Fullerton junior college, during my or, line, and form, for which the west is becoming known over the United States," said Dean Arthur C. Weatherhead of the U. S. C. college. "I am naturally happy over such an honor," said Lukens, "but I owe much to the patience and encouragement of Louis E. Plummer, Fullerton high school and junior college principal, and to William T. Boyce, dean of Fullerton junior college, during my eight years of research on the work, while serving with them." Avocado Varieties Most Suitable for Southland Differ A blanket recommendation of suitable avocado cannot be made for California in general, is the conclusion arrived at by Orange county avocado growers at the bi-monthly dinner meeting held last week under the auspices of the farm bureau avocado department. Carter Barrett, president of the California Avocado association, addressed the growers on searching for new and better avocado varieties. He stated that the variety committee of the association, in cooperation with the county farm bureau committees, has come to the conclusion that the Guatemalan varieties did best near the coast, while the Mexican varieties did better in the interior areas. The Fuerte variety apparently is not well adapted to coastal conditions. It has been found that a given variety may be superior in one locality and inferior in another.
