Long Scientific Tests Show Gas Is Non-poisonous Subjecting themselves to a practically air-tight chamber filled with natural gas for two hours, a group of scientists have discovered that the gas used by companies over the State of California is nonpoisonous. Conducted by Dr. D. R. Drury, professor of medicine at the University of Southern California, the experiments terminated this week have been carried on for the past six months in utmost secrecy in the laboratories of the university and of the Los Angeles Gas and Electric corporation. The subjects played cards, read and lounged about as in their own living rooms; doing most everything but smoke. They experienced no ill effects whatever. Natural gas in itself is harmless, their report explained. "The only danger from this type of gas," Dr. Drury explained, "results when in concentrations difficult to obtain, a person is threatened with suffocation through lack of air. The accumulation of carbon monoxide in a closed room caused by unvented heaters or faulty furnaces has been the cause of danger," the S. C. scientist said. More severe tests were made with monkeys and rats. Except for a slight loss in weight the latter were found to be normal after a thirty-one day test in atmosphere with 30 per cent concentration of natural gas. Rats kept in the same chamber for thirty-six days mated and gave birth to normal offspring. In fact, the report stated, all but one gained in weight during the test. Dr. Drury addressed the convention of Pacific Coast Gas associations in San Francisco this past week on the harmless results of the experiment. Donald Novis is coming back home. Once just a sandy-haired kid from Pasadena, he is coming back a famous singer, to star on "California's Hour." A talent search lifted Donald Novis from obscurity to fame. A talent search now brings him back to the listeners of his native state. Nobody except the people of Pasadena knew Novis back in 1928 before he won the national Atwater Kent auditions. Within a few years all America thrilled to the ringing tenor of the youth with an infectious smile and a modest manner. Paul Whiteman starred him on NBC. Motion pictures took him up. National networks vied for his voice. And most flattering of all, imitators created a "Donald Novis" style of singing. Now, after years of success in New York, Novis is coming home to take the place of Jane Froman on California's learing "home talent" show, beginning Monday, Sept. 28.
