First Year of Anaheim Legion Told from Historian's Paper By HARRY C. WILHELM Post Historian, 1919-20 Officers and members, American Legion: Herewith submit for your approval as Post Historian for the year 1919-20 the history of what is known as Anaheim Post No. 72 American Legion, dedicated to the memory of our comrade Peter Offel, who was the first from its city to be killed in action. The post was organized Oct. 31, 1919, in the Board of Trade rooms on the 4th floor of the Valencia Hotel. William P. Webb, Jr., being elected as first commander and retaining the office for the ensuing year. Following being a brief narrative of the origin andason for the present organization, The nation's largest patriot-organization. Four years ago from across the Atlantic came an France, to lend aid lest Demo appeal from our sister Republic, crazy might die on a cross of "iron". Thus while an autocratic nation was gloating over its victories, with visions of world domain, in the meantime hurling gigantic armies with all known methods of modern warfare, leaving in its wake, desolation, death and destruction. On this side of that vast expanse of water, this great nation answered the appeal to help check the great onrush of the German armies, and while this gigantic machine of destruction was about to reach its goal, two millions of Americans in the flower of manhood raised the Stars and Stripes over the devastated battle fronts of France, gripping victory from an almost certain defeat. Conmrades, for that victory 300,000 of our members sleep in peaceful repose, some under the poppy covered fields of France; some in the deep blue waters of the Atlantic. Others in various parts of Europe, not mindful of those who sleep under the soil over which floats the Stars and Stripes. Alas, that is not all as over 600,000 still remain who pass into the future, permanently maimed and crippled. Today we look back at that bleak November day at 11 a.m. in which the tumult of the world's greatest conflict had ceased, and two million war-weary men were impatiently awaiting their return to America's shores. Twenty of these far-sighted comrades, headed by the descendant of a great American statesman, and himself a hero in the great conflict, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., formed the nucleus of the now great American Legion. They met in France on the 15th day of February, 1919 and for the sole intention of forever perpetuating the spirit for which 300,000 of their buddies had died. They there laid the foundation upon which we have built this great organization, and today its membership is over a million. Post No. 72 is a chartered branch of the National organization, having a membership of 300 useful and honorable citizens of the community in which they live. Post No. 72 is a chartered branch of the National organization, having a membership of 300 useful and honorable citizens of the community in which they live. Under the leadership of our first and worthy commander, Wm. P. Webb, Jr., with his personnel, we have made the first year a credit to our community, our country and ourselves, with the various entertaining features enjoyed in our clubrooms now located on the third floor, Fisher Building and in which the various committees have played a prominent part. The weekly dances have been a great success and other forms of entertainment have been enjoyed by all who attend. We have not been unmindful of the fact that we have important duties to perform on National holidays, as on Decoration Day our post turned out in a body and marched to the cemetery, where joint ceremonies were handled by the G. A. R. and our members. Armistice day was celebrated by the staging of a parade, in which military, civic, commercial industrial and fraternal organizations took part, and in which a barbecue was staged by the Legion, corner of Broadway and Los Angeles streets, and which brought people from all over the county to the city. Following this, a carnival was staged for a week and a Studebaker car was raffled which gave the post quite a surplus in the treasury, and which is to be used in the purchase of a lot for the building of a club house, to be located on the corner of Broadway and Clementine streets. That week was surely a strenuous one for Bill as he was having difficulties in getting the money from the various concessions. We thought at times that he would close the show if they did not "come across with the jack." The guy that had the Salome dance with the famous No. 5 (which caused so many fellows to stay away from home until the wee small hours, and caused their wives no small amount of worry—no fooling, it was good) also caused Skipper Bill a great deal of trouble as he was running two shows and trying to get away with the price of one. The post was complimented from nearly every city in the county for the systematic way in which it handled the parade and prizes that were awarded the various bodies participating, after which the increasing spirit kept abreast of the times by adding more entertainment and inducements for the Christmas ball, followed by the largest gathering that has helped make the New Years affair in this city a complete social success as well as giving good financial returns to the post and bringing to a close the year of One Thousand, Nineteen Hundred and Twenty. I have tried to cover this year as completely as possible, and it has been my desire to mention all the functions of the Post for this period. I have been elected as Post Historian three times this year. May Lobe privileged to retire from this office at this selection of officers. Telephone 3456 THOMAS H. KUCHEL Lawyer 403 Bk. GETTING THEIR FEET UNDER THE TABLE If the state police force gets to working all the old sheriffs and constables will have to jump and boost for the old age pension plan. TAKING A CHANCE After all is said and done life is a gamble, and that seems to be what they are doing in Washington and over on Wall Street. If this or that won't do try something else. THE PLANT WIZARD The way they handed out those nice juicy checks not to produce, a fellow out on the firing line begins to think the secretary of the agricultural departments must have developed a new process to make money grow on trees and bushes. The organization recently received its charter at a meeting at the Service Men's club, 410 Pine avenue, Long Beach. Seventy-five women, all mothers of enlisted men, make up the present membership of the club. The club is open to all Navy mothers from the Long Beach recruiting district extending from Redondo Beach to Laguna Beach and from Compton to Santa Ana. The group meets the first and third Thursday of the month at the Service Men's club. "Mothering young enlisted men, and writing to enlisted men without mother is one of the purposes of the club, it was said. Officers in addition to Mrs. Webb are Mrs. J. V. Procuring an American flag, the youth, endangering his life, clambered to the top of the tall pole and changed the emblems. He was formally thanked by the American Legion for his act. WHO'S WHO AND HOW Whether or not politics would enter into this new state police proposition offers a live topic for discussion. The state police force may reach up to 10,000 men. They would open up an avenue for favorites. There may be good points to the new plan—but it would be tough on the present force of peace officers throughout the state.
