HISTORY OF VETERANS OF BATTLE WARS ORGANIZED IN ANAHEIM ON AUGUST 30, 1935 In the early 1930s, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of America was instituted in Anaheim, California. The Anaheim of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which had been few months previous and had become a growing and active in Anaheim, felt the need of a ladies auxiliary to support the work of the organization. Mrs. Opal Walter Borg, along with other members of the Fullerton unit, joined in Anaheim, put forth their uniring efforts to seize and apply for a charter. The charter was granted thirty-one names, which was more than triple the number. This membership has now increased to thirty-two have never put on a membership drive. The military requirement practically as it is today. These Auxiliaries were organized as a National society in Columbus, Ohio, in 1903 and were recognized by the parent organization in 1907. The auxiliary units to the army of the Philippines and to the American Veterans of Foreign War College, Ohio, September 23, 1895 served overseas under the American James C. Putnam, this group was under the name of "American Veterans of Foreign War College." Eligibility in the Ladies' Auxiliary cannot be inherited, it cannot be achieved (except by nurses.) The following have the extraordinary privilege of membership: mothers, wives, widows, sisters, half-sisters, daughters, foster daughters and step-daughters (not less than sixteen years of age) of deceased or honorably discharged officers or enlisted men who served in the Army, Navy or Marine Corps of the United States of America, and who had foreign service in time of war or during an expedition for which a Campaign Badge has been authorized. Step-mothers and foster sisters (not less than sixteen years of age), who were in this status before the service of the comrade under whom they claim eligibility was rendered, which service would entitle them to membership in the V.F.W. Foster mothers and foster sisters (not less than sixteen years of age), who were in this status before the service of the comrade under whom they claim eligibility was rendered, which service would entitle them to membership in the V.F.W. Female members of Army Nurses' Corps, Signal Corps, United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, or the Medical Corps of the United States Army, who have had foreign service in time of war or during a campaign or expedition of the Army, Navy or Marine Corps of the United States of America for a campaign for which a Campaign Badge has been authorized. The objects of this organization are fraternal, patriotic, historical and educational; to assist the Posts and members of the Veterans Of Foreign War College. Veterans Of Foreign War United States; The Veterans of Foreign War Columbus, Ohio, September 23, 1895 served overseas under the American James C. Putnam, this group was under the name of "American Veterans Of Foreign War College." Like the Veterans of Foreign War College, they plan to visit one of these hospitals once a month and take the articles they have made along with home-made candies, jellies and magazines, and also materials for the boys to work on, such as old silk hose, etc., which they make into rugs and other articles. Some of the social affairs are the dances, card parties and entertainments, proceeds from which go to the above and also to the V.F.W. National Home at Eaton Rapids, Mich., which was founded in 1925, to maintain a home providing for the care of widows and orphans of deceased or totally disabled veterans. It is the only one of its kind that is sponsored by a veterans organization. In 1929 they built a hospital for the care of ill children, and the protection of the well ones from infection. The home is different from many widows and orphans homes, in that it is a community of individual cottages, housing eight or ten What IS the Face behind the Mask? Those who own no property would be faced with greatly increased rents, prices of food, clothing and other necessities—thousands thrown out of work. Many schools would have to close. Know the truth! Don't let conviving schemers fool you with the sweet honey of Sales Tax Repeal—while they inject the gangrene of "Single Tax." Tell others about this poisonous deception before it is too late. LESLIE'S DRESS SHOP ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Best wishes to all World War Veterans Veterans of Foreign Wars of U.S. Is of Oldest Vet Organizations in United States; Originated in 1899 V. F. W. POST IS ORGANIZED DEC. '24 IN ANAHEIM On December 12, 1899, the Colorado Society, Army of the Philippines, was formed in Denver, Colorado, with General Irving Hale as its founder. The following year this society became national in scope, and John S. Stewart Post No. 1, established in Denver at that time, is still an active unit of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. Several smaller veteran groups organized in Pennsylvania from 1901 to 1903, united with the American Veterans of Foreign Service in 1905. This body in turn amalgamated with the Army of the Philippines in 1913 and the united society became known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. The eligibility requirements formulated by that group of fourteen veterans in Columbus, Ohio, on September 23, 1899, are virtually the same as those that govern eligibility regulations of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. today. In 1917, at the time of America's entrance into the World War, Posts of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. could be found in every section of the United States. Thousands of its members again entered the service under the American flag and the name and fame of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. spread over every battlefield in Europe where American Veterans were engaged. Anaheim post No. 3173, Veterans of Foreign Wars came into existence in Anaheim on December 10, 1934, according to the post records, upon which night the members who had signed the charter opening gathered for the organization meeting. The aims and purposes of the parent organization, which was founded in 1899 as the American Veterans of Foreign Wars, were explained to the assembly and 38 members signed the membership rolls. It was decided at the first meeting to hold the charter open until March 10, 1935. This for the purpose of allowing other qualified veterans the opportunity to get in on the charter. At the first meeting officers were selected and their election was as follows: Commander, Walter Borg. Senior Vice Commander, Frank Clark. Junior Vice Commander, Wm. Hawkins. Chaplain, Viggio P. Mallin. Officer of the Day, Eddis Lane. Quartermaster, George Miller. Adjutant, Howard Haines. An intensive membership campaign was then started and interspersed with this was the taking up of veteran welfare work. Many other problems confronted the post with its veteran work, which was met by the members. Thousands of its members again entered the service under the American flag and the name and fame of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. spread over every battlefield in Europe where American soldiers were engaged. As a result, when the younger veterans of the World War returned to their native shore from Europe, Siberia, the Far East, or from service on the high seas, they were greeted by the members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. who, like themselves, had fought for Old Glory under alien skies. Today the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S.—America's Gold Chevron Order—is composed of Posts in every state in the Union, as well as in Alaska, the Canal Zone, Hawaii, the Philippines, Europe and Cuba. Today the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is recognized as America's most unique veteran organization, taking a militant lead in all great movements tending to help the veteran and his dependents. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is the only national veterans' organization that maintains a home for the widows and orphans of deceased or totally disabled veterans. The V.F.W. National Home, on an estate consisting of 612 acres, was founded in 1925 and is located near Eaton Rapids, Michigan. This project constitutes a community of individual homes where children are given privileges and opportunities characteristic of the average American family environment. Underlying the development of the V.F.W. National Home is the principle of keeping brothers and sisters and mothers and children together. All children of school age receive a complete education in the public schools of Eaton Rapids. There are no uniforms, no dormitories and no military discipline. The V.F.W. National Home has been maintained and financed without levies or assessments upon the individual members of the organization or appeals for public charity. The V.F.W. National Home represents the V.F.W. ideal of Adjutant, Howard Haines. An intensive membership campaign was then started and interspersed with this was the taking up of veteran welfare work. Many other problems confronted the post with its veteran work, which was met by the members. The first year activities were somewhat limited due to the necessary organization work, but gradually the post began to take its place in the civic work of the city. With the starting of the second year the post obtained quarters in the K.P.Hall where they have held many social functions of note, and many times entertained the public with excellent programs. With the coming of the second year of the post the following officers were chosen to succeed those who served the organization year. Commander, L.N. (Pete) Wisser.
