SCIETY CLUBS Scotland In Song and Story Honored In Ebell Club Program and Luncheon Session Honoring Mrs. John Stewart of Hemit, who is a native of Scotland and district president of the California Federation of Women's clubs, all the charm of the romantic country of Scotland was relived by members of the Ebell club at the luncheon, business, and program session Monday afternoon at the K. P. hall. A setting of baskets of yellow Scotch broom combined with red snap dragons was provided for both the luncheon tables and the dining room. Cellophane thistles, the craft work of Mrs. J. S. Van Wangoner were arranged in flower pots of red and yellow plaid. Napkins in a similar plaid were table favors. Decorations for the luncheon were in charge of Mrs. J. E. Baker, Mrs. William C. Gathas, and Mrs. E. H. Kersten. Following group singing of "Comin' Thru the Rye," luncheon guests were introduced by the club president, Mrs. Leo J. Friis. In addition to the honor guest, Mrs. Friis presented Mrs. Robert Brown of Santa Ana, Miss Beatrice Gregor of Bloomington, and Alex Walker of Fullerton, president of the Robert Burns society. Mrs. Clark McEuen of the state resolutions committee was introduced by Mrs. E. E. Smith, state chairman of literature. Mrs. McEuen spoke briefly urging a study of amendments which will come before the public in the fall elections. Luncheon music was presented by Miss Agnes Wallace of Hollywood who wore Scotch plaid, a velvet jacket with medals testimony to her ability, and a black velvet tam o'shanter. Following Robert Burns society was given by Mr. Walker who presented tentative plans for the construction of a Scotch cottage in the Fullerton hill. Society activities in honoring the well loved poet, who though a native of Scotland is really international in appeal, were explained. A play in Scotch dialect, "The Old Philosopher" was offered by Miss Virginia Lee Peterson. The selection was a humorous presentation with a flavor of family affairs. Wearing a gown the exact counterpart of one worn by the beautiful Scottish queen, Mary Stuart; Mrs. John Stewart presented a review of the life of the queen from her birth, through her rapid rise to power, the religious uprisings of John Knox, and her final loss of the Scottish throne. Mrs. Stewart's costume was of black velvet and cloth of gold with a fitted bodice and long flowing skirt. A wide panel of gold from the throat to the floor formed a striking note.
