Twenty-one Franciscan Missions were founded by the Rev. Fray Junipero Serra and his colleagues extending from San Diego to what now is Sonoma County. Some are in ruins, others have been restored, all are preserved as priceless landmarks. Because of recent widespread revival of interest in the old Missions, Earl Lee Kelly, Director of the Department of Public Works, at the request of Governor Frank F. Merriam, has prepared for the benefit of visitors, brief histories of them with directions on how to reach them over California highways. For the purposes of this series, the Missions will be taken up in the order of their location from south to north rather than in the sequence of their founding. Mission San Diego de Alcala July 16,1769 When Father Junipero Serra arrived at San Diego with Governor Gaspar de Portola after their arduous march from La Paz the conditions they found there were enough to discourage a far stouter heart than the valiant priest's. Many soldiers and sailors of the sea expedition had died from scurvy and the survivors still were suffering from the disease. But, as Father Palou recorded, "that fervent zeal which continually glowed and burned in the heart of our venerable Father Junipero did not permit him to forget the principal object of his journey." Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. . . And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee." The Lesson-Sermon includes also these passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "Suffer no claim of sin or of sickness to grow upon the thought. . . You have no law of His to support the necessity either of sin or sickness, but you have divine authority for denying that necessity and healing the sick." SO MUCH SERVICE FOR SO LITTLE MONEY Step by step—one piece at a time—this modern home-maker completed her All-Electric Kitchen. Now, she is taking full advantage of that faithful and economical servant—electricity, because electricity not only does the cooking, refrigerating and water heating, but performs a hundred and one other household chores as well. And yet, her total monthly bill today is very little more than she used to pay for lights alone. When you buy electricity, you get more for your money than any other household expense. No other service has such a wide range and variety of helpfulness. It's today's biggest bargain. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON COMPANY LTD. CALIFORNIA Electrical Age has just begun! Anaheim, Calif., April 9, 1936 and establish there a presidio, parted for the north with a all expedition on July 14, 1769. and two days later, Sunday, July Father Serra, impatient to rise up his task of converting Indians to Christianity, foundthe first mission in California. For the location of his mission, Father Serra selected a site addining the Spanish camp. Until this day, holy Mass had been selectated in a brushwood shelter and the Spaniards only. The date selected for the establishment of the mission was an appropriate as Father Palou observed, on that day, in the year 1212, Spaniards fighting under the banner of the Holy Cross won an historical victory over the Manedans, which annually was celebrated by the Spanish church the Triumph of the Holy Cross. "Furthermore," says Father Zephyrin Engelhardt, mission historian, "it was the day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, through whose intercession Father Serra hoped to wean the savages from their beastly practices and induce them to accept the enobling Faith of Christ." Assisted by Fathers Vizaino and Parron, Father Serra, on the morning of July 16, raised the Cross where the chapel was to stand. blessed and sprinkled the site with holy water and himself sang the High Mass and preached a sermon, thus dedicating his first California mission, which he named in honor of San Diego de Alcala (Saint James of Alcal). Many years before, Sebastian Viscaino, discovering San Diego Bay, had named it after San Diego de Alcal. (Fontuned on Page 1) FRED H.
