Anaheim, Calif., Dec. 5, 1935 SOCIETY CLUB Ebell Opens Yuletide Season The Anaheim Ebell Club opened the Christmas season Monday afternoon with the presentation of a pageant of the birth of the Christ child under the supervision of Mrs. Walter Ross. An improvised stage was erected in the auditorium of the K. P. hall to portray the scenes of the medieval ages, and the lights were dimmed to give the proper effects. Under the direction of Mrs. George Sloope, Jr., the Girl Reserve double sextet sang the cantata "The Mystery of Christmas" to unite the various scenes of the pageant story. The girls were unaccompanied in all their songs; Mrs. Pauline Graaf Rhoades playing organ interludes for the actors only. Miss Helen Tobin carried the solo part for one of the beautiful songs that made up the cantata. A choir loft protraying style of the sixteenth century church, with its red velvet draperies and candelabra of white candles, was the setting for the girls of the sextet, which included the Misses Shirley Llewellyn, Harriet Riley, Peggy Akerman, Doris Berger, Lorna Hiserodt, Rosemary Ramm, Lucille Shaver, Virginia Simms, Charles Hilliard, Helen Hopkins and Mary Alice Samuel E. Loose and Gordon Wright. At the close of the pageant Reverend Thomas A. Walker of the Presbyterian church pronounced the benediction. The afternoon program followed the luncheon and regular meeting of the club. Mrs. William Gathas and Mrs. Thomas Haster were co-chairmen of the luncheon program, with several ladies of the club assisting. Mrs. Fred Clough, Mrs. F. F. Twinem and Mrs. V. W. Koehler carried out the real Christmas theme in the table decorations, with a gaily decorated tree gracing the head table. Acting as toastmistress on the luncheon program Mrs. Leo J. Friis introduced Mrs. Paul Demaree, who sang two of the lovely Christmas numbers, "Night of Nights" by Beardsley Vande Water and a Christmas song from Mendelssohn's "Messiah". Miss Kathleen Demaree accompanied her mother, "The Other Wise Man" by Van Dyke was read by Mrs. John P. Brastad. Calling to order the regular business meeting in the club room Mrs. Friis heard the various reports. Announcement was made by Mrs. R. M. Waltz, curator of the club, that the regular meeting of the Bible, drama and book sections will be omitted this month. New members introduced were Mrs. Ben F. Hein, Mrs. Stanley gifts for the veterans in the San Fernando hospital. Mrs. M. M Henderson was in charge of this special part of their program. At the conclusion of the business program the meeting was turned over to Mrs. Earle Phillip who introduced Mrs. Ross for her presentation of the pageant. Las Amigas Study Club Has Christmas Party Mrs. H. F. Schneider was hostess to the Las Amigas Study Club at her home on El Retiro Ranch Tuesday afternoon. The twenty-one members and guests were seated at one o'clock for a delightful luncheon. Bought of sugar pine and frosted pine cones which Mrs. Schneider had brought down from Lake Arrowhead formed the decorative effect in the dining room, and four lighted white tapers enhanced the wintery effect of the wreaths on pine and frosted cones artistically arranged on the table. Carrying out the green and white color scheme Mrs. Schneider arranged baskets of the dainty rice flowers in the living room. Mrs. Cora Dugdale presided at the meeting following the lunchoon. The program for the afternoon was under the leadership of Mrs. Belle Tedrick. The "Bio tiful songs that made up the cantata. The opening scene of the pageant was that of the shepherds bearing their gifts to the Christ child. The shepherds, portrayed by William Ross, Kenneth Schrank and Voss Herrington, approached the stage from the rear of the auditorium, carrying lighted torches to show the way. The star of Bethlehem was seen over the stage as the angels entered to lead the way for the shepherds. Miss Jessie Johnston, Mrs. Arthur Kemper, Mrs. J. G. Hilleary, Mrs. Roy Mendoza and Mrs. Newman Sanford were in the role of the angels. The last scene was that of Mother Mary receiving the gifts from the Wise Men. Mrs. A. P. M. The silver cup awarded the club for their float in the Armistice day parade was displayed and Mrs. Friis extended the thanks of the members to Mrs. O. R. Owen who had directed the making of the float. Louis Hoskins made a special announcement regarding the water bond election which is to be held on December 19th. A mass meeting for women will be held at the Fremont Auditorium on December 10, with Stanley' Chapman and Murray Thompson as speakers. It was also announced that three turkeys will be given away at the meeting. A strikingly beautiful Christmas tree, decorated with silver and blue lights was surrounded by her mother. "The Other Wise Man" by Van Dyke was read by Mrs. John P. Brastad. The elective officers chosen for the coming term are Mrs. Mamie Brumagin, President; Mrs. Mary Mitchell, Senior Vice; Mrs. Rose Sparks, Junior Vice; Mrs. Nina Law, Chaplain; Mrs. Elva Breudler, Treasurer; Mrs. Maude English, Conductress; Mrs. Nora Dodge, Guard. The appointive officers will be named at the next meeting. The Social Club which regularly meets on the fourth Tuesday will hold their regular meeting on the 10th of December in the form of a Christmas party. Each member is asked to bring a covered dish for the luncheon, and an inexpensive gift for the Christmas tree. Bringing to a close the activities of the afternoon Mrs. Maude English and Mrs. Gier were hostesses in the serving of delicious refreshments. M 2414 Auxiliary Plans Yule Activities Meeting at the home of Mrs. Benny Black on South Olive street at 10 o'clock the ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit No. 72, spent Monday sewing for the veterans in the hospital at Sawtelle. Among other necessary articles the ladies made a dozen willows. At noon Mrs. Black served a covered dish luncheon. Baskets of red toyon berries made a cheerful setting. During the afternoon a brief business meeting was held, at which time plans were laid for their Christmas activities. Mrs. Black was appointed, by President Guarda Akerman, to act as chairman of the committee to prepare Christmas baskets, which will include both food and clothes for the needy veterans and their families. Next week the ladies will make favors for the Christmas dinner at Sawtelle hospital, and will include them with those of the other Orange County units. Nationally Known Evangelist Holding Services The Cypress Church of the Nazarene, on South Walker in Cypress have the pleasure of having Reverend Oscar Hudson, who is a nationally known Evangelist, with them. The Reverend Hudson, who is known as "God's Man With God's Message," has been conducting revival services and will be with the Cypress people until December 8th.
