MEANING OF CALIFORNIA COUNTY NAMES FROM THE STATE RECORDS
The story of how California counties derived their names is an interesting part of the history of the Golden State.
Believing that the thousands of tourists who annually motor over the state's great highway system would like to know how the counties they visit came by their names, Director of Public Works Earl Lee Kelly, at the request of Governor Frank F. Merriam, has had prepared from state records a series of brief stories of the origin and meaning of the names of the counties of California including a few salient facts about each county. Following is the ninth installment of the series.
Mariposa County — Created February 18, 1850. One of the original twenty-seven counties of the state. The county took its name from the Mariposa river. The meaning of "Mariposa" in Spanish is "butterfly." There is some doubt as to how this stream derived its name. According to one story, in June, 1807, a party of Californians from the San Joaquin valley made one of their annual excursions into the Sierra Nevada mountains for the purpose of hunting elk. Camping upon the banks of a river, they were charmed and delighted with the butterflies of most variegated and gorgeous colors that hovered around them in countless numbers, and because of this they gave to the stream the name "Mariposa." Another beautiful story, and probably more authentic, is that the first explorers in the mountains of that region beheld for the first time a pretty lily growing everywhere, gay-colored and spotted an din some respects resembling the wings of a butterfly. In their admiration, they gave to this dainty flower, the Calochortus, the name of Mariposa (butterfly) lily.
Mariposa is known as the "Mother of Counties" because it once comprised one-seventh of California's area. Here is the world-famous Yosemite Valley. Ahe county embraces magnificent mountains, extensive forests, flower-strewn mountain meadows, cool canyons and sparkling streams. It is host to a greater number of tourists than any other county.
Not only is the scenery unsurpassed, but large ranches produce fine strains of hogs, sheep and cattle, grain and hay, mountain vegetables and fruits, and mining plays an important part in the industrial life and wealth of Mariposa. The old Mariposa mine has produced more than $7,000,000 in gold and the Princeton mine $5,-000,000. Ore in the Spread Eagle runs about $10,000 to the ton. Here is the great Exchequer Dam, 350 feet long, with a carrying capacity of 75,000 second-feet and backing the waters of Merced River up for 12 miles. Population: 3233. Area: 1463 square miles.
Mendocino County—One of the original twenty-seven counties of California. The County derived its name from Cape Mendocino, which was discovered and named by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542, and named for Don Antonio Mendoza, the first Viceroy of New Spain, or Mexico, appointed by the King of Spain in 1535.
Magnificent Mendocino, in the Redwood Empire, is noted as a paradise for the tourist, vacationist and sportsman. In the empire as a whole are nearly 2000 miles of trout streams, many miles of ocean and surf fishing and game...

The proper treatment for a bilious child
THREE STEPS
TO RELIEVING CONSTIPATION
A cleansing dose today; a smaller quantity tomorrow; less each time, until bowels need no help at all.
ANY mother knows the reason when her child stops playing, eats little, is hard to manage. Constipation But what a pity so few know the sensible way to set things right!
The ordinary laxatives, of every ordinary strength, destroy all hopes of restoring regularity.
A liquid laxative is the answer mothers. The answer to all your worries over constipation. A liquid can be measured. The dose can be exactly suited to any age or need. Just reduce the dose each time, until the bowels are moving of their own accord and need no help.
This treatment will succeed with any child and with any adult.
Doctors use a liquid laxative. Hospitals use the liquid form. If it is best for their use, it is best for home use. The liquid laxative they generally use is Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. Any druggist has it.

OLD TIMER RENEWS
OLD ACQUAINTANCES
An old timer steps up to renew old acquaintances and allows there is nothing sure except death and taxes. If a government puts up five million dollars to spend for this or that or what ails you, and the people put up a like amount you are not sure, says the old timer, what are you going to get.
First and foremost, for instance, if it's a series of dams they are going to build, the big contractor who knows his onions is slated for a nice fat and juicy contract, so buy equipment and such like which costs lots of money. Then when he starts to work he brings along his expert men who know pikedrivers, oerricks and steam-snovels and they get top wages because they know what to do. When the men who have an inside acquaintance brush elbows with one big shots and they get their perquisites and whatnots. All of whom costs lots of jackpots. After the work begins the locals get the crumbs that tall and finally everything is washed up. The taxpayer then anxiously and solemnly reviews the job, takes a good look at the dams, waits for the next wet winter rains and steps up to the captain's office and pays his taxes when are sure.
Corn and Hog Men To Vote

Chili Pepper Proves Healthy
It is through liberal use of chili pepper powder as a seasoning that Mexicans get much of their vitamin-A requirement, says the Bureau of Home Economics of the United States Department of Agriculture, in a recent letter to the Farm Advisor's office. Mexican diet, because of its apparent lack of vitamin-A, was a puzzle to nutritionists until someone suggested chili powder. Most peppers are known to be good sources of vitamin A.
For vitamin tests, the Bureau used the particularly variety of pepper (chili ancho colorado) most extensively dried and ground for chili powder. These peppers formerly were imported into this country from Mexico, but are now successfully grown in Southern California. They do not do well, however, in New Mexico and Texas.
Preliminary tests indicate the vitamin-A content of air-dry chili pepper is very high—two or three times that of a good grade of butter.
Orange County is one of the leading pepper growing areas in the United States. The 1934 agricultural census reports that over 2,500 acres were planted to chili peppers in Orange County. The production amounted to 1,750 dried tons.

THE CARE AND EXCHANGE
Corn and hog producers of the nation are being given the opportunity Saturday, October 26, of voting on the question "Do you favor a corn-hog adjustment program to follow the 1935 program which expires November 30, 1935?" A program will not be developed unless a large percentage of the corn and hog producers express themselves as being in favor of it.
A meeting is called for 10:30 A.M., Friday, October 25, at the Farm Bureau office, 622 N. Main Street, Santa Ana, for the purpose of discussing the corn-hog outlook, according to W. M. Cory, Assistant Farm Advisor. Growers present may vote at this time. If they are unable to be present the polls will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., at the residence of C. E. Price, 1001 Hickory St., Santa Ana, on Saturday, October 26.
LIKE A SHIP WITHOUT A RUDDER
A dictator for a state or a nation is dangerous. He might think he is benefitting the people while he is alive, but when he dies things are ten times worse.
The Farmer’s Corner (Continued from page 2)
inevitably place an impossible burden on other taxpayers.
"The state sales tax was adopted in California for the double purpose of providing adequate funds for our public school system and removing this burden from the shoulders of common property taxpayers," Stewart said.
"Although no one would contend that the sales tax is a perfect tax, it at least has this great advantage that it is spread over all of the 6,000,000 residents of the State, including a large group which previously paid no direct tax toward the support of our schools or state government.
"If the 'single tax,' with its sales tax repeal provision, should be adopted, our 700,000 property owners would be forced to assume an added tax burden of more than $100,000,000 per biennium—the amount now contributed by the state's entire population of 6,000,-000 under the sales levy."
OBSERVATIONS
BURNING THE CANDLE FROM BOTH ENDS
Somebody waved the magic wand and the last congress passed a law giving four and a half billion dollars to the New Dealers for public work, provided, the counties matched their allotments with a bond issue secured by a mortgage on their property. Sometimes the people would say yes, sometimes no, and sometimes they would saw wood and go nishing.
WATER SAVING AND FLOOD CONTROL
Years ago people talked about water saving and flood control, but there never has been a plan of action proposed that met with unanimous support. If some one could hit on a sound and practical proposition it no doubt would be approved by the people. With increased population water naturally will diminish.
Conservation of water is a paramount issue before the people of this county, and in fact all of Southern California. One reason why there is flood damage during rainy seasons is because the bed of the Santa Ana river has filled up with sand and debris, thereby making the bed in some places higher than the land adjacent.
BIG BOND ISSUE LAID ON SHELF
Now that the big bond issue for flood control has been laid on the shelf, the people should concentrate on building four or five small, but durable, concrete check dams in the Santa Ana river, in this county. The dams would conserve water, and that is what is needed. These dams, say about five miles apart, would hold the river water in wet winters, which heretofore ran to waste into the ocean. These dams would be easily and economically constructed and would conserve water here in this county. The big dam at Prado, which site, by the way, is in Riverside county, would divert the water in the Santa Ana river, to other water sheds, which would be illegal.

Merced has more than 318,722 acres under irrigation, ranking fourth in the state. More than 1500 miles of canals carry water to rich and productive soils, the systems representing an investment of $25,000,000. Diarying accounts for 50 per cent of the county's income. One lumber mill at Merced Falls, near Merced, has an annual lumber cut of over 50,-000,000 feet annually, with a payroll in excess of $1,000,000. In addition to rail lines, Merced has 237 miles of hard-surfaced highways, while 1750 miles of fgood, graded roads reach every section of the county. Population: 36,748.

"Quite frankly, repeal of the sales tax would plunge state finances into chaos and would probably be followed by a tax strike by common property owners if an attempt was made to force them to carry the load."
Colony formed here by the fifty pioneers who came from San Francisco was the first of its kind ever to be created in this country. The men were frugal, industrious and home loving. Individually they sought personal advancement and collectively they stood for the betterment of all. They were not imbued by any sect or creed and were loyal and upright citizens. There word was as good as their bond, they had no selfish motives and attended strictly to their own business. The pioneers choose as their main vocation the manufacture of wine, and many of them were connoisseurs in judging choice liquors.
The ageing of wines was a rare accomplishment and many of the cellars contained vintages twenty years old. During the wine making season, the colony was the scene of much activity. It required about three months time to harvest all the grape crops, and complete the season's work.
Thereo. Several check dams, five miles apart, in the river from Prado to the Olive bridge, would in great part conserve all the water that heretofore has been wasted into the sea. If the river bed were dredged to a depth of twenty feet there would be no flood damage what so ever.
