Saying "something ought to be done" gets no one anywhere. Here is what the Exchange is doing
THE citrus industry is faced with its biggest crop. It must be marketed in a year when normal production would more than meet demand.
In such times, Exchange members share unrivaled facilities for moving the largest part of their crops at the best prices.
Complete sales facilities and knowledge of all markets permit the Exchange to keep each fully supplied—and none oversupplied. Every market, foreign and domestic, is constantly combed for business by Exchange salesmen.
Exchange dealer service men call on thousands of fruit merchants and fountain operators each year, urging and helping them to install displays and conduct special sales. Other men are engaged in keeping citrus fruits prominent on the menus of hotels, restaurants, clubs and institutions.
The most vital need is an enlarger demand—the desire of farmers to eat more citrus fruits. Advertising, unceasing since the Exchange is working, almost handed, to relieve the pressure on prices.
Who is doing more—or has in the effort to move a record profitable consumption?
The Exchange is supporting Citrus Marketing Agreement. Relief not remedy. It is a mech used, not to replace sales or but only after they have been the fullest possible extent.
If you agree that the Exchange suing the right course, why not bership with the manager of an association or district exchange.

The model shows the Ford docks on the River Rouge where ships are unloaded of iron ore, coal from Ford coal mines, and other raw materials. When in operation the model shows how big dippers scoop the material from the ships and deposit it in bins ready to start its journey to the blast furnaces and other departments of the River charged with 15 tons of crushed coal. The oven is sealed except for a gas main at the top and the walls are heated for 16 hours to a temperature of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. Gases driven off during the coking process are treated for the recovery of by-products, each process being shown in the working model. The daily yield of these includes 95,000 pounds of ammonium sulphate; 12,800 gallons of crude oil; 40,000 gallons of tar; and 30,000,000
20,000-lb. Exhibit Shows How Ford Is Using By-Products
Exact Reproduction of Great Plant at Dearborn, Michigan, Reveals Activity
Two ten-thousand-pound exhibit pieces, rushed by express from Dearborn, Mich., have just arrived in San Diego and were quickly uncrated at the Ford Exposition building in Balboa Park. These units, when put together, form the By-Products exhibit which shows by a working model an exact reproduction in miniature of the major units of the By-Products Division of Ford River Rouge Plant at Dearborn.
These mammoth crates left Dearborn, where they were made, and arrived in San Diego three days later, making as fast time as a passenger between these two points. They were loaded into an express car together with the first automobile Henry Ford made in 1893 and the first Model T Ford, made in 1908. The entire express shipment weighed 47,000 pounds. It was accompanied and guarded by two men on board.
The by-products model was made byrew of 25 skilled model-makers who worked eight weeks at their task. Completely assembled, it is 12 feet wide and 20 feet long.
The model shows the Ford docks on the River Rouge where ships are unloaded of iron ore, coal from Ford coal mines, and other raw materials. When in operation the model shows how big dippers scoop the material from the ships and deposit it in bins ready to start its journey to the blast furnaces and other departments of the River Rouge Plant.
The model also shows how, in winter months when the Great Lakes are closed to navigation by ice and storm, freight trains deliver the raw materials to the plant.
Five Tracks Serve
One section of the model, the original of which is called the "high line," is scaled down to represent a section three-quarts of a mile long and forty feet high. Five railroad tracks serve it, and it is of open-girder construction to permit the unloading of bottom-dumping cars. The cars, as shown in the model, are pulled up to the "high line" by cogs and their contents dumped into bins below. The empty cars are carried down grade by their own weight and run back over a spring-point switch after having been emptied.
Coke, which is needed for the production of iron, is made from coal. There are 240 coke ovens at the Rouge Plant. Their daily yield is 3,675 tons of coke. In the coking process each oven is charged with 15 tons of crushed coal. The oven is sealed except for a gas main at the top and the walls are heated for 16 hours to a temperature of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. Gases driven off during the coking process are treated for the recovery of by-products, each process being shown in the working model. The daily yield of these includes 95,000 pounds of ammonium sulphate; 12,800 gallons of crude oil; 40,000 gallons of tar; and 30,000,000 cubic feet of gas. This gas is used for fuel in heating open furnaces, annealing ovens and various other units at the factory.
Cooling Off Coke
After the coke has remained for a sufficient time in the coke ovens, it is pushed into waiting cars beneath and carried, still white hot, under a quenching tower where tons of water drench it to cool the coke.
Ammonium sulphate, derived in the making of coke, is sold as fertilizer. Tar, another by-product, is burned as fuel; light oil is refined, mixed with gasoline and sold as motor benzol. Coke which is too small in size to be used in the blast furnace is sold for domestic use.
Many tons of slag are run off from the River Rouge Plant blast furnaces each day. The slag is taken to a cement plant, which is a part of the Rouge Plant, and converted into Portland cement. This operation is also shown by the working model in the Ford Exposition.
