CITRUS INSTITUTE IN SANTA ANA ON JUNE 15 TO PRESENT MARKET TOPICS Southern California citrus growers are awaiting with interest the coming Southern California Citrus Institute on June 15, at Santa Ana, according to W. R. Schoonover, Citrus Specialist with the Agricultural Extension Service and well known to Orange County citrus audiences. Reports from the various citrus producing counties in California indicate that large delegations will come to Orange County to attend the annual popular lecture classic. Under present discrepancies in the citrus industry, D. D. Waynick, chairman of the Citrus Department of the Farm Bureau, will disclose the wide variation existing at the present time in the size of picking boxes. He will also discuss pooling methods and accounting systems. Paul Amstrong, General Manager of the California Fruit Growers Exchange, will present the latest developments in the Valencia markets of the East and export trade. Water and rail transportation investigations will also be explained by the shipping manager. Lemon growers will be particularly interested in the report on the State Prorate and the outlook for the lemon industry as seen by A. J. McFadden, local citrus grower and chairman of the State Prorate Commission. C. B. Hutchison, Dean of the College of Agriculture, University of California, will outline the extensive program of citrus investigations now engaged in by the various departments of the University, including the Citrus Experiment Station, Division of Subtropical Horticulture and the University Farm. In discussing some notable changes in orchard practices, Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg will cover the latest developments in mottle leaf control, conservative irrigation practice, scaly bark control and other phases of orchard and tree management. D. W. Tubbs, Agricultural Commissioner, will report on the present status of citrus tree pests and offer recommendations for their control during the current season. As the institute just precedes the main campaign of the citrus pest control season, it is advisable for every grower to be present to hear the recommendations. Red spider control investigations will be reported on by A. M. Boyce, entomologist, Citrus Experiment Station. The local committee in charge of arrangements of the Institute at the Willard High School, Santa Ana, includes Harold Lang, Fullerton, chairman; C. G. Stuart, President; S. M. Beadle. GET A MODERN CAR IN Economy Over a million and a half owners have proved the economy of the Ford V-8 engine in the last three years. And this year's Ford V-8 is the most economical car to run that Ford has built during 30 years of building economical cars. The explanation is simple. A dual down-draft carburetor splits the fuel needed by a "4" into eight equal charges. New crankcase vents assures better year-round oil efficiency, reducing wear and repair. Inum cylinder heads eliminate carbon and allow premium performance on regular priced gasolines. The new Ford V-8 for 1935 up to Ford tradition of low cost dependable transportation. Today and you will buy it. The medals, commemorating the service ideals pioneered by Theodore N. Vall, early-day president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, covered meritorious acts during a hurricane and a motorboat explosion. At the same time other awards were being announced throughout the nation. Mrs. Celia Callahan, Mrs. Sarah Raw and Miss Marjorie White, of Seaside, Oregon, were credited with vital public service in keeping alive communication in an anxious seacoast town overwhelmed by an 80-mile-an-hour tempest that nearly wrecked their central office. The switchman, Jack J. Widitz, of Seattle, was cited for heroism in saving lives. In the Seaside storm last October, Mrs. Callahan was alone at the switchboard when the chimney crashed through the roof and the plate glass window collapsed. Miss White, telephoning to the office from her home at the time, heard the operator scream. She and her sister, Mrs. Raw, hurried to Help Mrs. Callahan. The three operators then for eight hours protected the switchboard wiring from torrents pouring through the roof, and maintained local service. The storm had cut Seaside off from the outside world. Imbued with the spirit of service and determined to "get the message through," the operators summoned aid from Astoria, 20 miles away. A Seaside radio amateur agreed to help and by repeated calling contacted an Astoria amateur, who delivered a message to the telephone manager. The Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce has asked the city council How to Save On Gas Explained by Company Booklet "How To Save on Your Gas Bills" is the interesting subject of a special chapter in a folder just issued by Southern Counties Gas Company for distribution to the company's customers. Among the suggested methods, offered by the gas company, by which the customer may save money are the following: "When water boils, it is as hot as it will ever be." If your teakettle boils needlessly, you are increasing your gas bill unnecessarily. "When your house is comfortably warm, turn down the gas on your heating equipment or shut it off completely for a time. Seldom is it necessary in California to keep the heat on full, continuously, except in the coldest weather. "Do not let the hot water run from the faucet unless you are using it. Turn the faucet off as soon as you have finished. In this way you will find that your hot water heater costs less to operate." "Domestic science experts have discovered that it is no longer necessary to "scar" meat before roasting it. Thus a high oven heat at the beginning of the roasting process is a needless use of gas. "When going on a vacation or other extended absence from home, remember to turn off the gas at the main valve of your water heater. Other suggestions from the company to its customers call attention to the need for proper adjustment of pilot lights on all gas appliances and urge that the burners of all gas equipment be adjusted to give the utmost in service at a minimum cost. The folder also carries an illustration of a typical gas meter with complete instructions by which the customer may read his own meter and compute the 1.
