Daniel Graham Is Honored at U. S. C. Daniel Graham of Anaheim was recently honored as members of one of twenty-nine scholarship societies of the University of Southern California when the institution set aside a day to pay tribute to scholarship achievement. Faculty and departmental heads took part in the exercises which included an assembly in Bovard auditorium in the morning, an afternoon lecture by Dr. Ralph T. Flewelling, director of the School of Philosophy; and an evening dinner, addressed by Dr. Thomas Nixon Carver, professor emeritus of Harvard University and of the class of '91 at U. S. C. President R. B. von KleinSmid in his speech to the honored students said, "to achieve the critical faculty, to be able to react creatively to an inspired situation, to think clean and truthfully and clearly and courageously — is true scholarship." Two counties, Mono and Trinity, showed no bonded debt outstanding, while thirteen counties had a bonded debt outstanding of more than $50.00 per capita, these counties being Colusa, which was highest with a debt of $91.33 per capita, Riverside, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno, Yuba, Yolo, Los Angeles, Sutter, Orange, Santa Barbara, Contra Costa, and Ventura. "The public debt is no easy burden on the people of California," declared James Mussatti, executive secretary of the Association, in discussing the study. "The actual and potential public bonded debt on the people of California for the last fiscal year was $3,466,000,000, or 57 per cent of the assessed value of all property in the State. "The fact that the debt burden of the people of California exceeds half the assessed value of their properties," Mr. Mussatti continued, "is not nearly so startling as is the fact that the issuance of more and more bonds to burden the property of the taxpayers is becoming so easy. The present session of the Legislature, by its passage of laws permitting the issuance of revenue bond bills, is opening wide the flood gates for all kinds of added debts. These bills some of which have been passed over the vigorous protest of taxpayers, will permit the widespread issuance of revenue bonds. In the interest of the credit of the state and in protection of the taxpayer these bills should not be made into law." 3 LINES — 3 TIMES — 3 DIMES CLASSIFIED ADS RATE: Five cents the line (count five words to the line) for each insertion. Thousands of Shriners Ready for San Diego Safari C. N. P. A. Service Five special trains will haul thousands of Shriners from Los Angeles to San Diego, Saturday June 1 for the opening week end of the world's fair. Shriners will stage a mammoth ceremonial on the fair grounds initiating 300 candidates, and after a barbecue in Balboa Park the trek will continue to Tia Juana and Caliente for a day and a night in Old Mexico. Potentate L. S. Rounsavelle of Al Malaikah temple and officers of the uniformed organization inspected the Santa Fe engines that will haul the specials last week at the Santa Fe yards in Los Angeles. Rounsavelle stands out in front in civilian clothes. Shriners Prepare For Trek to San Diego Saturday For Fair Opening Shriners from the various temples of the eleven western states are busy this week making preparations for the "Shrine Safari" on which thousands of wearers of the crimson fez will trek to San Diego for the opening week end of the California Pacific International Exposition. Headed by Potentate Lafayette S. Roussavelle of Al Malaikah temple the nobles will charter five special Santa Fe trains from Los Angeles, taking with them 300 neophytes to be given the Arabic rites Saturday afternoon, June 1, on the San Diego fair grounds. The specials will start leaving Los Angeles at noon, although fleets of planes, the H. F. Alexander, Admiral line flagship and motor caravans will carry advance guards to make preliminary arrangements for the most spectacular ceremonial ever staged in the history of Shrinedom. A night and a day in Tia Juana and Agua Caliente will follow the fair grounds festivities which terminate with an open air barbecue in Balboa park. Officials of the various uniformed organizations, the patrol, bank, temple guard, stagecraft and chanters this week visited the Santa Fe yards in Los Angeles to inspect the mighty engines that will haul the Shriners on their southward pilgrimage. For the first time in history the uninitiated will have the opportunity of witnessing a Shrine ceremonial. This event will be open to those visiting the California Pacific International Exposition at San Diego on Saturday, June 1. Never before has it been possible for non-Shriners to witness the Oriental ritual, with which Masons who have reached the 32nd degree or attained the rank of Knight Templars become Shriners. The public ceremony is by special decree of Potentate L. S. Roussavelle. Nearly a score of temples will bring their hands and uniformed organizations handlecap. Reservations for the will close at once according to Georgetown J. Ramsey, recorder of Al Malaki temple. Wahlberg. Although favored in many ways, California and Orange County are by no means exempt from the toll exacted each year by flash storms which cause both sheet erosion on the gentler sloping fields and heavy cutting on the steep slopes. Man operates first as an agent of denudation, that is, of removal of successive layers of the soil, by baring the surface and by compacting the soil. Of these, the former act is enormously the more significant. By destroying the cover of vegetation and by cultivation absorption is greatly reduced and runoff is increased, and in other cases the wind is given a chance to blow away the surface soil. The spread of civilization in all parts of the county has been accompanied by a gutting and wasting of land without equivalent in history. Our land problem includes erosion, which will grow increasingly serious in some areas unless checked, says the Farm Advisor. In the Santa Paula region the Soil Conservation Service has undertaken a major erosion control operation for this state. The area will serve as a demonstrational base for that part of the state. A similar demonstration project is being sought by local property owners for Orange County. Cultivation, as has been the case in other states, will be forced away from numerous areas of steeper slopes in California in the near future. Although our hills and slopes have shown marked resistance to erosion, the effects of hill-side cultivation and grazing are becoming apparent over larger and larger areas. The comparatively high investment value of Orange County lands makes the expedient of erosion control well worth while.
