Spectacular Cacti Have Glass Houses Built Round Them
Two Giant Plants On Exhibit at Huntington Library at San Marino
Building the greenhouse around the plant instead of collecting plants in glass houses is the new and unique experiment of William Hertrich, superintendent of the Huntington Botanical Gardens at San Marino. The plants to benefit by this unusual procedure are two giant cacti just received from Arizona, known as "Carnegiea gigantea." The species sometimes attains a height of 60 feet. In order to establish them during the rainy season in the open ground, where they may be seen by visitors, protection in the form of houses of glass had to be built around each plant to keep out excessive moisture which tends to rot the base of the plant. The housing also helps to generate warmth which encourages growth of new roots.
Mr. Hertrich hopes to acclimatize the strange cacti to San Marino, inasmuch as they are seldom seen outside of a few groves in Arizona. On the Papago reservation, where a spectacular grove stands, an annual festival is held at harvest time, when the edible fruit of "sahuaro," as the plant is known to the native Indians, is picked and preserved. Another interesting feature of the "sahuaro" is that many of them provide shelter for the elf owl, which takes advantage of the holes made in the trunk by woodpeckers to ensconce itself comfortably during the day. At night it forages in the desert.
Honey is Mother
Nature's Answer
Honey is Mother Nature's Answer for Sweet Tooth
Mother Nature may not be up on the very latest food fad but one may be sure that she knows how to feed babies and young children, in the opinion of H. M. Krebs, supervising apiary entomologist, state department of agriculture, who adds that may be why honey tastes so good to every child.
Honey, Krebs pointed out, is the only sugar crop which is produced without cultivation, gathered without human labor and packed and preserved in the bees' own factory. The small consumption of honey, he said, is not due to any lack of appreciation of the importance of honey as a food, or its deliciousness when eaten with hot biscuits, or poured over crisp waffles. He commented:
"It is just one of those foods which has been slowly pushed back by the multitude of new foods which have been developed to lend variety to our table.
"Recently, however, honey has stepped forward into a more prominent position among the foods. This may be due to a recognition of the fact that it is the best of all sweets for the child. It may be that with the coming of good roads and automobiles for every family the bee hives in the orchards and the honey stands along the highways are re-wakening an interest in what we may call our old time sugar."

For Three-Month Period on Jan. 2
Last Term of Short Length Due To Law Terminating On March 31, 1935
An announcement from the war department indicates that enrollments in the CCC will be opened on January 2, 1935, for the period terminating between March 1-31, 1935. Enrollments can be for the three-month period only, as the present legal authority under which the CCC is operating terminates on March 31, 1935.
Enrollments are to fill up the vacancies which have occurred in the CCC companies since the enrollment in October of this year, and to replace men who are being discharged on December 31, 1934 for having completed 15-months of service, the maximum time anyone is allowed to serve.
Although exact quotas have not been announced, it is estimated that between 2000 and 3000 young men will be selected by various agencies of the department of labor for enrollment at Fort MacArthur from Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and neighboring counties. Veterans are selected by Veterans Administration faculty, National Soldiers' home, California.
Bovine Tuberculosis Campaign Is Success
Satisfactory progress is being made in the campaign to eradicate bovine tuberculosis from California cattle, and by the close of 1935, when federal funds now available must have been expended, a greatly improved situation will have been created in the solution of a problem that has become acute. Dr. C. U. Duckworth, chief of the division of animal industry, state department of agriculture, reports to Director of Agriculture A. A. Brock.
