Tri-County Fair’s Success Hailed As Half-way Reached
Thousands Pour Through Gates To See Greatest Assembly of Exhibits In West
Establishing a new record for attendance, number and variety of exhibits and beauty of displays, the 13th annual Los Angeles county fair combined with Riverside, and Orange county fairs, has reached its half way mark. Already it is assured that the attendance will surpass the half million goal placed by the officials earlier in the year.
The thousands who have poured through the gates thus far have marveled at the size and completeness of the exposition. They have gazed in admiration at the gorgeous decorations, the magnificent landscape effects and the cleanliness of it all. Every one of the score or more of major departments of the fair is larger than it has ever been before. This is notably true of the livestock department, the domestic arts department, the junior fair, machinery division, school exhibits and agricultural section.
Economic Council Opposing Sinclair
Orange county men attending the Economic Council of Southern California at San Diego Saturday included O. T. Stephens of La Habra, Lotus H. Loudon of Anaheim, Ross A. Shafer of Tustin, and George Raymer of Santa Ana, who held William Jerome's proxy.
The council, a non-political group, declared that unless Merriam is retained as governor the state's future under Upton Sinclair will be chaotic. Main speaker at the conclave was Dr. Frederick P. Woellner.
The poultry show which closes Saturday night, to be replaced by the rabbit and pigeon show, is the largest west of the Rockies this year. The night horse show will be replaced on Saturday night by a series of sensational night programs in front of the grandstand. These will be headed by the thrilling Roman chariot races, automobile races, motorcycle races, gorgeous fireworks and many other features.
Interest is also added to the final half of the exposition by the milking, churning and farmerette contests which will be held the latter part of the fair. A large number of entries have already been made, according to the superintendent of the dairy department under whose supervision the event is held.

"Sunkist" has earned and held the confidence of buyers
"Sunkist," trademark of the Exchange, virtually means citrus fruits to the generation that has grown up in America during the last quarter-century.
Unceasingly since 1908, Sunkist advertising has told the consumer new ways to use citrus fruits, new reasons for using them—and why the Sunkist brand is an assurance of dependable quality.
And the public has not been disappointed. Careful grading has earned a confidence which results in a readier kist fruit at the best market.
The trade shares this prefer sales policies and more rapid the reasons.

Mother Colony Chapter Will Continue Patriotic and National Defense Work
Work for the Daughters of the American Revolution throughout the state is starting. Mrs. Elmer H. Whitaker, the state regent and Mrs. Joseph Taylor Young, the state vice-regent, together with the various state chairmen are sending their instructions and suggestions to the 85 chapters including Anaheim's Mother Colony chapter. As Mrs. Whittaker says in part — "We have 25 national standing committees and several state standing committees, these committees, composed of national, state and chapter chairmen, cover a great range of educational, historical, patriotic, social service and public relations activities.

Dr. Waters Heads Local Legion Post
Homer Challlaux, past commander of the state department, American Legion, installed officers for 16 Orange county posts at a joint meeting in Santa Ana last week.
Anaheim's Dr. John E. Waters was installed as commanding officer of the local post, together with his complete staff.
Challlaux reported on the Legion's campaign against communism and advocated that the United States declare its recognition of Russia void because of violations by the latter country of pledges not to spread communistic propaganda in this country.
Commander Eph Williams of the 21st district, which includes Orange county, appointed Dr. Waters of Anaheim as chairman of Americanism committee, and Ray E. Smith of this city as chairman of national defense.
Probable Deflection of Cotton Studied
Orange county residents this week speculated upon the probable deflection of Hamilton Cotton from the democratic party to join with Joseph Freeman, formerly manager of George Creel's campaign, to form a democrats-for-Merriam movement to defeat Upton Sinclair, the socialist usurper of the democratic nomination. The question of Cotton's support for the democratic nominee became questionable when on primary election night he "conceded the rape of the democratic party in California to Upton Sinclair."

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCHES
"Tremble, thou earth, at the present of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob." These words from the Psalms are the Golden Text in the Lesson-Sermon on "Matter" on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, branches of The Mother Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
One of the Bible selections in the Lesson-Sermon includes Paul's words to the Romans: "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death... For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."
Among the correlatives from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, are the statement: So-called material existence affords no evidence of spiritual existence and immortality. Matter is not the vestibule of Spirit. Jesus reasoned on this subject practically, and controlled sickness, sin, and death on the basis of his spirituality."
A free lecture on the subject of Christian Science will be given by Richard J. Davis, C. S. of Chicago, Illinois, member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., in The Open Air Theater, Anaheim City Park, Sunday afternoon, September 23, at 3 o'clock. The Public is cordially invited.
