WAKE UP YOUR LIVER BILE—WITHOUT CALOMEL And You'll Jump Out of Bed in the Morning Rarin' to Go If you feel sour and sunk and the world looks punk, don't swallow a lot of salts, mineral water, oil, laxative candy or chewing gum and expect them to make you suddenly sweet and buoyant and full of sunshine. For they can't do it. They only move the bowels and a mere movement doesn't get at the cause. The reason for your down-and-out feeling is your liver. It should pour out two pounds of liquid bile into your bowels daily. If this bile is not flowing freely, your food doesn't digest. It just decays in the bowels. Gas blocks up your stomach. You have a thick, bad taste and your breath is foul, skin often breaks out in blemishes. Your headaches and you feel down and out. Your whole system is poisoned. It takes those good, old CARTER'S LITTLE LIVER PILLS to get these two pounds of bile flowing freely and make you feel "up and up." They contain wonderful, harmless, gentle vegetable extracts, amazing when it comes to making the bile flow freely. But don't ask for liver pills. Ask for Carter's Little Liver Pills. Look for the name Carter's Little Liver Pills on the red label. The mailing list, the largest in the history of the fair, is an illustration of the national and international scope to which the big agricultural and horticultural exposition has grown in the comparatively short space of time since it was inaugurated in 1922, according to Clyde E. Houston. The prize list, printed in eight separate volumes this year, and each one covering from one to three departments is replete with additions, innovations, new departments and distinctive features, all tending to make the exposition more interesting, alluring and comprehensive than ever. In the books there are listed 30,000 individual classifications for which premiums are offered. In the agriculture and horticulture volume alone there are 1181 different entries listed. They comprise practically every fruit and vegetable grown in the civilized world. B. Kaufman in a statement released today states: "Feeling that a short, intensive campaign is less tiring to voters and permits a careful scrutiny of the various merits of various candidates, I have held up any active campaigning until August. Office details have kept me close to my desk and much in court. "My opposition has raised the question of private practice. This sounds like a good campaign issue, but actually as private practice is concluded in this county, there is no real relevance to the criticism. Ever since the county was organized all district attorneys and the staffs have handled private practices. So little work of this character has been handled by my staff, and then only out of office hours, that the public work of the office not only has not been impaired, but has been commended from many sources as highly efficient. Such distinguished predecessors of mine as: R. Y. Williams, H. C. Head, L. A. West and Z. B. West, all engaged in private practice without criticism. The attorney general of the State of California engages in private practice as do practically all U. S. senators and congressmen who are lawyers. "Acting as public defender to poor folks of the county, this office renders a vitally necessary function, without pay and does not interfere with private law firms or individuals, for the persons so advised by us, lack funds to hire such advice from the private legal talent of the county. Picking at random four smaller counties than Orange which is in the 9th class, we find that all pay the D. A. more than does this county, for I voluntarily accepted a 15% cut, making my annual salary $3825; 10th, 11th., 12th., and 13th class counties pay their district attorneys respectively: $4500, $4500, $4200, and $5000. I was happy to contribute this cut in income at this trying time to help out the harassed taxpayer of Orange county. "The division of corporations office of Los Angeles, speaking of prosecutions of corporate security cases, says in part: 'The record of your office in cases of this character (protection of the public against stock frauds and shady promotions) is near the very top in the total convictions throughout the state. We appreciate the efficient work etc.'" "The division of labor statistics and law enforcement in San Francisco writes in part, appreciating the efficient work of this office: 'As a deputy with Orange county in my district assure you that were it not for your wholehearted co-operation and assistance, numerous wage claimants would not have been paid the wages earned by them. Settlement of these cases resulted in the collection of thousands of dollars in wages which benefitted Orange county and its citizens.'" "Commending the office on a penitentiary conviction secured July 27th. I quote the following: 'On behalf of the board of medical examiners, I wish to thank you for your interest and cooperation in prosecuting Simon Mohr, one of the gang of eyesight swindlers that has mulct the people of this state for many years.'" "I hope all voters will study my record in office and vote on that record—not on personalities or wild campaign statements which are always subject to emotional overemphasis, as primary grows near." Forest Service to Establish Station Quarter of Billion Loaned to Farmers Of Western States Government Soon Will Hold 35 Per Cent of Outstanding Farm Indebtedness W. I. Myers, governor of the farm credit administration, speaking before the western regional conference of the American Farm Bureau Federation at Reno, Nevada, Wednesday, said that under the farm credit administration approximately a quarter of a billion dollars has been advanced to farmers and stockmen in the nine western and Pacific states represented at the conference. These states include Washington, California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. According to Governor Myers, the total amount loaned by the federal land banks and the land bank commissioner on the security of farm property in the nine states during the past year was $110,000,000. He also pointed out that the land banks and commissioner now hold from 20 to 35 per cent of the total farm mortgage indebtedness in the various western and Pacific states. The 12 Federal land banks, which comprise the farm mortgage system, now have loans outstanding throughout the United States of more than $2,000,-900,000, including the loans made for the land bank commissioner. Half of this amount has been advanced in the year since the farm credit administration was organized. In addition, the land banks and the commissioner have made commitments to lend about two-thirds of a billion dollars more. This contract for Parker Dam; Work Will Begin Soon That actual construction of Parker dam, important unit of the Colorado river aqueduct, may be under way within 30 days was indicated following the opening of bids last week on the building of this structure. Bids were opened at the Los Angeles office of the United States reclamation bureau, under whose direction the dam is to be erected. Six Companies, Inc., the construction firm which is now building Boulder dam for the federal government, submitted the lowest total bid for the dam and the diversion tunnels which will bypass the waters of the Colorado river while the job is under way. Six Companies' bid totaled $4,239,834, including $1,100,841 for the tunnels and $3,138,993 for the dam itself. REPORTS AUTO STOLEN Dick C. Fisher of 118 North Olive street reported to police that his automobile was stolen after midnight Monday from North Philadelphia street. will bring their holdings to about a third of the total farm mortgage indebtedness in the United States. "Borrowers from this system not only have been refinanced," Governor Myers stated, "and relieved of the uncertainty of securing new loans when their short-term obligations fell due, but they have been refinanced for a long period, eliminating periodic commissions. Moreover, the interest rates on these loans are much lower than those previously paid by borrowers in this section and this will mean a saving for farmers amounting to many millions of dollars each year." Forest Service to Establish Station To Probe Grazings Stability of the livestock industry through the betterment of forage conditions in the central foothill gazing belt will be the chief objective of the first federal grazing experiment station in California, recently approved by H. A. Wallace, secretary of agriculture, according to E. I. Kotok, director of the California forest experiment station of the U. S. forest service. Deed to a tract of 3500 acres between Bates and O'Neals in Madera county has been acquired, where the needed facts concerning the management of foothill range land will be developed by scientific study over a period of years. Possible increases of forage plants, practical value of range reseding, safe allowances of stock per acre, effects of fire on foothill vegetation, and uses of water and land will be among the problems studied. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TELEPHONE COMPANY Lauds California For Furnishing of Farm Leadership General Counsel of RFC Says Co-operatives Best in the Golden State California not only supplies the country with a large portion of its fruit and vegetables, but with sound leadership in agricultural marketing as well. Stanley Reed, general counsel, reconstruction finance corporation, told weekly meeting of the California Fruit Growers Exchange. Mr. Reed first became familiar with cooperative marketing when his father helped organize the tobacco co-operative in Kentucky in 1908. He was later general counsel of the federal farm board, from which position he went to his present one, in which he has many contacts with agriculture. In commenting on the success of cooperative marketing in California, Mr. Reed stated that failure in other states had resulted from inability to persuade a large enough percentage of growers to join and remain loyal to a cooperative when they saw "outsiders" obtain an apparent advantage as the result of the large cooperative "holding the umbrella." "I saw the tobacco growers wreck their successful, well managed cooperative, which had increased their prices consistently," said Reed, "and the main reason was that the outside minority also benefited in the improved price and had less restriction. My experience and observation indicate clearly that where growers have been far-sighted enough to support their cooperative organizations, they have obtained best results for themselves."
