Coolidge's philosophy of "we do not need more of things that are seen; we need more of things that are seen; we need more of things that are unseen" was the subject matter Dr. Thomas Newlin, for 13 years instructor at the Fullerton junior college and now of Whittier college, told Rotary club members Monday at their meeting at the Eiks clubhouse.
Dr. Newlin stressed the religious theory expressed by "in him was life and life was the light of man." He said that overemphasis on subjective matter leads to fanaticism and mysticism, while our present emphasis upon the objective leads to breakdowns like the present. He declared that scientists do not look for God with their souls, rather they seek material evidence.

For Avocado Group
In a letter received from Congressman Sam Collins, California representatives are working hard to protect the avocado industry of the state, according to A. R. Marshburn, chairman of the avocado department of the Orange county farm bureau.
The problem centers around the question of whether avocados entered the United States under a tariff when the trade treaty with Cuba was inaugurated. The treaty was entered into in 1903 and provided that all products of the soil being admitted free to the United States unless specifically provided for in the treaty were to be duty free commodities. In 1932 the custom board rendered a decision that these avocados or alligator pears were being shipped duty free into the United States, and therefore were not subject to tariff. The efforts of the California delegation are in some way to clarify this situation so that Cuban avocados will be subject to tariff regulations.

Avoid Bird Born on Wrong Side of Road
All the rules of safety seem to be encompassed in one published paragraph recently called our attention. A motorist's rule, it reads:
"My first suggestion to all motorists is drive carefully enough for yourself and the other fellow too, because the chances are he isn't. My own system is to expect the world's prize idiot around every next corner. When I turn a curve or go over the top of a hill I hug my side of the road like glue and I slow down a bit because I always picture a congenital imbecile at the wheel of a car coming at me from the Young Ladles, Housewives and Teachers Meehanles, Professors and Preachers Are clamoring for Good Old Ale That Golden Glow has for sale.
