Colony’s Leaders in “Good Old Days” of 1863 Had Difficulties Getting Lot Owners to Pay Their Assessments Officers Instructed to Sue Delinquent Members for Dues But Precaution of Getting Correct Legal Information Cause Change In By-Laws; Vaqueros Were Hired Until Late Fall Back in the “good old days” of 1863 the officers and directors of the Anaheim Water company, which served at once as the city government and “life” of the colony by furnishing the water it needed for agricultural purposes, had their difficulties in collecting. Like their successors of today, the men at the helm of business and civic affairs of the community in its infancy were forced to drastic measures to get money dues from delinquent members. Consequently, the trustees of the water company voted in the early fall of 1863 to sue all persons who were behind in their payments. But to fortify themselves for the ordeal, the officers of the company sent their president and George Hansen to Los Angeles to consult an attorney before taking any legal action. The committee returned, made its recommendation, and the by-laws of the company were changed accordingly. Future minutes will show for what purpose. Hiring of a vaquero also was the business of the community, because the cattle that roamed the plains insisted upon tasting the green foliage within the colony. The problem was a real one, and bothered the local shareholders until late in the fall when winter rains set in, bringing up fresh grass as food for the cattle. It is estimated in the commission's annual report for 1932 which was transmitted to congress, Monday, December 12. While the amount of money saved the public by this branch of the commission's work runs into large figures, the actual cost of the work for the last fiscal year was only $23,400 or an average of $57.23 a case. Hundreds of advertisers of fake products have been driven out of business through cooperation of publishers with the federal trade commission in its campaign against fraudulent advertising, and thousands of otherwise honest business men, who had habitually used exaggeration in their advertising assertions, have revised their "copy" and now find that it pays to tell the truth in advertising. Regarding the different types of false advertising found, the commission, in its annual report, says its investigations have disclosed frauds of many kinds. The worst are perpetrated by those who prey on those of their fellows who are willing to try anything to get relief from pain or the handicap of illness. Millions of dollars are spent annually for preparations worthless or of doubtful value but advertised as being effective. Some chemists, some "cosmeticians" and others, who are looking for easy money, sell preparations which will not always stand up under careful scientific analysis. A "wrinkle oil" was found to consist of castor oil with a few drops of perfume, put up in 2-ounce bottles of pleasing shape, with beautiful labels, for $2. For fat people many reducing creams are offered, and numerous vendors advertise magical results, all of which are false and misleading, for there is no cream that will reduce fat by mere application. Some vendors offer the identical cream as a tissue-builder or flesh food to enable skinny folk at will to build up flesh on the neck, arms or legs, the back, the bust, or wherever they crave it, yet there is no known cream that will build tissue or feed flesh. Having perfected the form divine by either reducing rolls of fat or rounding out the graceful curves, perhaps the color of the hair is not quite pleasing, and to remedy this there are tonics galore to remove dandruff and thicken the hair and cause it to grow, and dyes of many kinds to impart a color that might make one appear more youthful, if the lines of the face and the color of the skin did not belie the copper tint that displaced a natural and distinguished gray. A. Benedict of North Fork. Careful estimates show that these men expended $104,000 to shoot 1,044 bucks, or $99 per buck,—only one hunter in every five being successful. Eighteen hundred cars were used by the hunters and the average mileage traveled was 300 miles. Anaheim, Calif., Dec. 29, 1932 The Family Doctor BY JOHN JOSEPH GAINES, M.D. THE DOCTOR'S PROBLEM Nobody knows more the effects of a national depression than the family doctor. He gets the full force of it. His customers fall down in their ability to meet this moderate charges; his own table and wardrobe dwindle. Even his savings depart, as mine have. But he does not complain of misfortune to himself—he sees future effects of famine on those he serves—and gives his life. The ill-nourished children and mothers of today, will be the weaklings of tomorrow—of next year and the next! The real results of the "depression" have not yet commenced. The very well-to-do will not suffer. But there are so many of the thousands who are not in that zone; and, these for the most part, fall under the care of the faithful family doctor. I, myself, see children all about me, that will never attain the state of vigorous manhood and womanhood—because of this awful depression,—if you are content to dismiss it with such a benign name. What to do? Well here is an instance where I must answer, "I don't know." Relief from this thing cannot come in a day—nor in a year—nor two years, in all probability. The fangs of the thing have penetrated our very nation's heart. It is the great mass of "common people" that constitutes our America. Without them our land would perish from the very weight of its gold! There is no more helpless body than that of what is termed the "idle rich." We must educate. It seems to me, the World War was a most effectual lesson to establish peace. Nobody but an inhuman devil could lay plans for future war! I base my statement on the lesson learned from the last outbreak of hell. We must educate. ATWATER KENT RADIO — $52.50 up FEARN RADIO ELECTRIC SHOP 273 E.
