Society - Personals - C Golden Wedding Celebrated Here Mr. and Mrs. A. Messersmith Honored at Family Dinner Recently Congratulations upon the celebration of their fifth wedding anniversary this week still poured in upon Mr. and Mrs. Albert Messersmith of W. Broadway, who last Wednesday held open house to friends and relatives, climaxed by a family dinner that evening at which Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Messersmith assisted in receiving guests and serving turkey. The honored couple were married in Pela, Wisconsin, in 1882. Present at dinner besides the honored guests were Mrs. Ed Sells of Fullerton; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Vetter of Fullerton; the Misses Augusta Bargman, J. Messersmith, Emily Tonn, Ardell Messersmith, Rosemary Ramm, Elizabeth Messersmith, all of Anaheim; Vendell Vetter and Clara and Ellen Sells of Fullerton; and Albert Ramm, Gordon Titus of Anaheim and James Vetter of Fullerton; the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ramm and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Messersmith. Quarton of 923 West Broadway, Mr. and Mrs. Stafford Minder Sunday returned to their home at Vista, California. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Miss Alberta Vall, after spending a week with her parents on North Lemon street, returned to Berkeley Sunday to resume studies as a junior at the University of California. Friends and relatives this week congratulated Mr. and Mrs. J. R. (Rod) Brastad upon the arrival Sunday of a baby daughter at the Hollywood hospital. Mother and daughter are reported doing well, by the grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. J. P. Bradstad of this city. Mrs. Ethel Lewis, an employee of the Anaheim library is recovering from a recent illness. Stages Mock Initiation Goading Goats and Other Feats of Humor Amuse Rebekahs Friday Evening When Rebekah officers relinquished their chairs after a business meeting for a mock initiation put on by the brothers of I. O. O. F. they sat back in their chairs and enjoyed the two candidates for initiation goading goats and otherwise raising much merriment. The fun fest was staged Friday evening at the I. O. O. F. hall, with Leo J. Frils as high mogul; Roy Compton, mogul; Emil Weber, legal advisor; John Clark, door tender; Clayton Allen, sky pilot; Charles Ahlstrom, grand bouncer; and Monte Webb, grand pilot. Clinton Nelson as Joshua E. Fry, and Roy Pollock as Mrs. Cynthia Wilfry, were put through their humorous paces, finally getting "bonced" on a canvas. After this ceremony the brothers served refreshments, with Harold Bircher in charge. Previous to the mock initiation, the Rebekahs held a business meeting, with Noble Grand Pearl Bircher presiding. Reports from various committees were heard. HALLOWE’EN PARTY The home of Miss Eleanora Parker at 509 West Broadway was the scene of a merry party recently when Echos of Hallowe’en resounded throughout the spacious house and gardens. Jack o'lanterns, black cats, and witches lurked in every corner. The newel post of the first stairway was converted into a hideous witch who greeted each guest upon arrival. Beautiful autumn flowers, holly berries, corn stalks provided elaborate decorations appropriate to the occasion. Hallowe’en games, ghost stories and music afforded entertainment during the evening. A huge cauldron containing mysterious packages was presided over by a witch who presented one to each guest with appropriate ceremonies. Delicious refreshments were served during the evening and it was midnight before the happy guests departed for their homes. The affair was in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Ey who were married recently in Palo Alto, and have arrived in Santa Ana where they will make their home. Mr. Ey is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ey, well known late pioneers of Anaheim and Santa California. Attractive dinner menu at the Pickwick. Legion Auxiliary Hears Two Reports Mrs. Yuarda Akerman gave a report on the 21st district meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary at the meeting of the Anaheim Auxiliary Monday evening. Mrs. Edna Elliott, president, called on Membership Chairman Emma Johnson for a report, while Past President Helen Betzsold reported on the county council meeting a week ago at Brea, where tentative arrangements were made to hold a Christmas party at San Fernando. Louis Kroeger, who is a past president of the Anaheim union high school student body and a graduate of the University of California, is employed in the state building at San Francisco. Junior Missionaries To Meet December 3 Junior Missionary society members of the White Temple Methodist church met Saturday afternoon and discussed home missionary work among the Indians, and foreign missionary work in China. Mrs. F. West and Mrs. E. Kinsley were leaders. The group meets December 3, at which discussion will center on Christmas plans, the leaders announced this week. Speaker Talks On "Taxes or Death" Redistribution of the Taxes is Hailed as Solution, by Noted Lecturer and Writer In the opinion of Geoffrey Morgan, well known lecturer and writer, the problem of taxes is in redistribution and not by decreasing them. He spoke at length Monday at the general afternoon meeting of the Anaheim Ebell club on "Taxes or Death," declaring that we have modern paved roads, well-equipped and beautiful parks, large public buildings and other desirable improvements because the people were willing to pay for them. He admitted that graft plays a certain part in some municipal projects, but stated that by and large graft was not a large factor. Within his lifetime, he stated, the spirit of independence among citizens has grown to one of interdependence. He cited Daniel Boone as an illustration. The famous frontiersman lived a week without depending upon somebody else to pick the garden truck, haul it to market, make clothing, or any number of other modern business purposes. Community spirit, pride and ideals have been adopted, calling for better schools, certain civic betterment projects, and city beautifying, all of which costs money. The speaker stressed the fact that one-fourth of the population (the landowners) pay three-fourths of the taxes. The remedy lies in something like the gasoline tax, he said, because that form is equitable, everybody paying in proportion to the use. The guests were escorted to a down-town cafe where a delicious 7 o'clock dinner was enjoyed after which they were entertained at the Melrose home for the remainder of the evening. Progressive whist was played and high score was held by Mrs. Dolan and Fritz Yungbluth who were presented with the prizes. The December meeting will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Wallop. Pot luck dinner was served at small tables, which were decorated with chrysanthemums. Mrs. Henry Schindler won high score prize, with Mrs. Leslie Bradley of Riverside, second. Roland Kroeger won men's prize, with George Matter second. Present besides the guest of honor were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kroeger of San Francisco; Mr. and Mrs. William Kroeger, Miss Marguerite Kroeger, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Kroeger and two child- Fine Arts Recital Given Saturday Eve Students of the intermediate and senior departments of the Orange County School of Fine Arts this week recalled with pleasure their recital Saturday evening, with Mrs. Kate E. McCullah, director and Mrs. Retta Schweiss and Mrs. T. Clark acting as hostesses. Students appearing on the program included: Patricia Ackerman, Stanley Sellinger, Mary Louise Ganahl, Drexel Ackerman, Mary Louise Pearson, Katharine McCullah and Hazel Filer Kuenzli in piano numbers; Hertha Togel, Carrie Lou Sutherland and Gilbert Kuenzli, vocal solos; Hertha Togel, Hazel Kuenzli, Mildred Gage and Katherine McCullah, comedy numbers.
