$75,000 Dollar Crop of Illicit Dope Weed Marijuana, Destroyed Near Here
Deputies From Sheriff's Office Uncover Extensive Cultivation of Mexican "Loco" Weed While Making Search For a Defendant
Seventy-five thousand dollars worth of Marijuana—the hashish of the Mexicans—enough to sooth the minds of a good many thousand of them, lay ruined this week, as the Orange county sheriff's office was completing its devestation of the crop. And that isn't all; the culturist-owner of the crop one Joe Carrisosa, who had his wares well camouflaged behind several rows of corn, found himself under arrest and faced with the dismal prospect of a felony charge that carries a one-to-six year sentence in the state's prison.
Late last Friday, Chief Criminal Deputy Sheriff Arthur L. Eells, Deputy Earl Nichles and Ed Perry, and Chief of Police James Bouldin, armed with a felony warrant in search of a defendant, made an unexpected call at Carrisosa's. They surprised him and his wife, in a small shed at the rear of the place busily working with a quantity of the weed which was spread out before them.
A complete search of the premises revealed a cleverly concealed growth of marijuana cultivated in rows in between which were rows of corn. The field, about 200 feet wide, extended from the house for about a half-mile. Within the 100 feet adjacent to the house, there was no marijuana nor was there any along the outer edge of the corn field. Yet within the field there was as much of the weed growing as there was corn.
Evidently Carrisosa was well acquainted with his business or else he was associated with someone who was for the plants in the field were so arranged as to insure the greatest pollinization of them and consequently the largest production of Marijuana seed, which together with the dried leaves of the plant forms the marketable substance.
From Chief Deputy Eells came the Senator Opens His Campaign
Discusses Work of Congress, and His Plans for Second Session
Greeting the people of the state for the first time since the adjournment of the first session of the seventy-second Congress, Samuel M. Shortridge, junior senator from California delivered on Monday evening a radio address, dealing with the work of the Congress and its probable effect upon this state.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation, the senator predicted will help the Southern California Metropolitan Water District bring water here from the Colorado river, the recently passed home loan bank bill "will be a blessing to many of our people, preventing foreclosure and loss of homes," and the revenue bill "will preserve the nation's credit, balance the budget, will enable the nation to meet its obligations, and, to some extent, protect the oil industry from ruinous competition.
The senator discussed his plans for the short session, declaring that he will work for state conventions on the liquor question, with adequate safeguard against the return of the saloon. He still believes that a general sales tax is more equitable in raising needed revenue instead of placing that burden on a few industries. He reiterated his opposition to Filippino immigration and his advocacy of Philippine independence. He held to the principle of a genuine American protective tariff, and voiced opposition to the "cancellation of debts legally and morally due and to become due from foreign sources."

Olympiad Opens This Saturday
With a spectacular "Parade of the Nations" in the newly enlarged Olympic Stadium now having a seating capacity of 125,000 people, the Xth Olympiad will officially open at Los Angeles on Saturday, July 30th.
While all the principal events are centered in Los Angeles and environs, yet Long Beach will draw large crowds to the rowing events which will be held in the Long Beach Marine Stadium from August 9th to 13th, while the yachting races off San Pedro harbor will be thrilling sights from August 5th to 12th. Pasadena, too will utilize its Rose Bowl for the cycling contests from August 1st to 3rd, according to J. H. Harrington, local agent for the Motor Transit Lines offering frequent service via which all the Olympic Games events are conveniently accessible.
"Perhaps never again during our lifetime will America witness another Olympiad," remarked agent Harrington today, "and certainly there will never be another right in our own 'front yard' so that everyone may see at least a part of the games for merely a trip of only a few miles."
Every person in Anaheim is probably interested in some of the 135 record-breaking events and for the convenience of our patrons this office has secured a limited supply of the complete official program of events with ticket information which shows the locations where each is to be held, and we will be glad to present a free copy to anyone making a request for one," advised the agent.
It was also suggested by agent Harrington that on account of the usual traffic congestion at such widely attended events, much time and trouble could be avoided through using Motor Transit Stages direct to Los Angeles. Long Beach or Pasadena where local transportation service provides convenient connections from the bus terminals to the various contests.
NEW ORANGE PICKING PLAN
Manager Carl E. Monahan of the Anaheim Citrus Fruit Association, is being credited by his fellow workers with having devised a new means of picking the oranges in the Anaheim groves which belong to that organization. Picking now commences at 5 a.m., and an endeavor is made to have all the fruit in for any one day by noon of that day. In this way, according to Mr. Monahan, the fruit comes into the packing house in fine condition and not withered as the case would be warranted.
CHECKING UP ON SPORTS BY JACK ADAMS
Joe Sewell, now with the New York Yankees, played in 1,103 baseball games. Lou Gehrig, also of the Yankees, tied that record the other day. Gehrig is now shooting at Deacon Scott's all-time mark of 1,307 consecutive appearances in the same act.
Shin guards for catcher's use were introduced by Roger P. Bresnahan of the New York Giants in 1908.
The present National League was formed in 1879; the present America League in 1900.
Residents of Long Island, New York—there are more than a million persons living in Queens County alone—would like to see their part of the world represented in one of the big leagues. New York could easily support three baseball teams.
The Olympic Games are held every fourth year in a different country. The first modern Olympiad took place in Athens in 1896. At that meet, United States was represented by a team of nine. They won every event in which they were entered.
In 1904 Hugh Duffy of the Boston Nationals batted for an average of .438. That's a record.
In 1929 the Brooklyn Nationals and Boston played a game which went 26 innings. That's the longest game by innings.
In 1918 the New York Giants opened the season by winning nine games. That's the most games won at the start of the season.
In the opening game in Detroit in 1930 the St. Louis Browns scored three runs, all of them homers.
How high can a man jump from a running start? The original record made back in 1876 was five feet five inches. It was not until 1887 that any athlete cleared the bar at six feet. The other night in New York, George Spitz jumped six feet eight and one-half inches. Will anyone ever better that record?

FLAT SIDE OF TIRE
Not only because the catch of the tire chain is easier to operate if it faces outward, but because it will chafe the tire otherwise, should the motorist be careful to see that it is in this position, remarks L. G. Evans, Director of Roadside Service, National Automobile Club. Incidentally, while chains may be attached by allowing the car to roll back upon them, the easy way is to jack up the wheel. It is cleaner, also.

Three Counties Planning Fair
Santa Ana Woman Given Prominence In Home Arts Department
Following the action of the 32nd district agricultural board in voting to hold the Orange County Fair in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona hereafter, comes the announcement from fair officials of the selection of Mrs. William McConnell of 1218 Orange Street, Santa Ana to take charge of the Orange County Division in the household arts section. The announcement is important in that it marks the initial step in the practical working out of the combination of the two fairs in a manner which will allow each to retain just as much as possible, its own individuality.
While the entries in the household arts department from Orange county will be judged along with the entries from all other counties, the exhibits will be aggregated and Orange county will receive the benefit of the attention it attracts. The plan is to follow the same idea in other departments wherever possible in the fair. The same plan will also be carried out in connection with the Riverside county entries.
Mrs. McConnell, it is stated, is very well qualified to serve in the office to which she has been appointed for she has had considerable experience in the particular work, having been connected for some time with the household arts department of the Orange County Fair. It will be her endeavor to secure as representative a showing as possible from Orange county. In accepting the post she stated that she was sure the response from the Orange County women would make a very creditable showing. The household arts department of the fair includes the needlework of all kinds, culinary, arts and crafts and antique displays. There is a grand total of 830 different classifications for entries and that many prizes will be awarded. Mrs. McConnell
Advisor Explains Control of Mildew
Mildew and Black Spot are pretty generally prevalent throughout the state, according to Harold E. Wahlberg, farm advisor, Orange County, mildew appears on the leaves as a powdery, whitish coating which consists of chains of small colorless spores by means of which the fungus reproduces. In a severe attack the growth becomes stunted, the leaves curl, become dried, and drop off, and unopened buds, young stems, and thorns may be entirely overgrown with the powdery coating. Death rarely occurs from this disease.
With Black Spot there are irregular black spots scattered over the upper surfaces of the leaflets. When this has spread fairly well over the leaf, the balance of the leaf turns yellow and falls off.
Control is the same for both mildew and Black Spot. A few precautions help in avoiding it, such as preventing the accumulation of too much moisture on the plants by avoiding too close planting or shading; also lack of ventilation or planting of climbing roses too near to buildings, which prevents the free circulation of air. Dead parts and badly affected leaves should always be raked up and burned.
The best fungicide available is a dust culture consisting of nine parts powdered sulphur to one part arsenate of lead. This is not the "flowers of sulphur," but a specially prepared, finely ground, dusting sulphur. If one desires to avoid staining the plants a special dusting sulphur dyed green is available, which is practically the same color as the foliage. The arsenate of lead not only controls chewing insects, but prevents lumping of the sulphur and increases the adhesive qualities of the mixture.
Dusting should be done on warm, still days when the leaves are dry. The first application is usually made as soon as the leaves begin to develop and repeated applications should be made at intervals of ten days to two weeks.

3-Months Sentence Given Local Man
