Mr. C. W. Moores has completed the taking of the census of school children in Anaheim school district. He has found 310 children between the ages of 5 and 17. The apportionment of school moneys is made on the basis of one teacher for the first 15 children and one teacher for every 70 thereafter. After making this apportionment to the various districts the surplus money remaining in the school fund is apportioned on the basis of the average daily attendance. Anaheim will be entitled to five teachers and $2,500—money enough to keep the school open for ten months. This is one of the few districts which uniformly keep a ten months school. The schools will close Friday, June 2nd for the summer vacation. There will be the usual closing examinations and parents and others interested are invited to be present. The election for school trustee to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of Mr. Langenberger's term will take place next Saturday.
THE MEMORIAL BELL
While assisting in the Decoration of St. Michael's Episcopal church last December, Charles B. Balch accidentally cut a deep gash in his wrist, severing an artery. He died from the effects a few days later. His father, a resident of Boston, has presented the church with a memorial bell, which was received on Thursday. As it weighs 1320 pounds, the tower of the church will have to be strengthened to sustain it, and its tones will probably not be heard for a week or two. It is made of pure bell metal, and it is judged it will be very sweet-toned. The inscription on the bell reads:
Ad Lauder Gloriamque Dei Omnipotentis
Et in Memoriam

Tuesday next is Memorial day, and as previously announced the graves of the soldiers interred in Anaheim cemetery will be decorated by Sedgwick Post, G. A. R. in the afternoon. The Anaheim Fire Department will perform escort duty, and the Anaheim Brass Band will furnish the music after a short parade through the streets, the line of March will be taken up to the cemetery where the usual exercises will be held; including an oration by Rev. J. A. Emery. Donations of flowers are solicited. They can be left at the Planters hotel on Tuesday morning.
As an evidence of the profits attending the cultivation of oranges where the fruit is of a good variety and proper care is bestowed upon the trees, the Los Angeles Herald mentions the fact that Mr. Dalton whose place is in the southern portion of Los Angeles, has sold as high as $800 worth of oranges, from a quarter of an acre of full grown trees, in a single year.
The will of the late Isaac Lankershim has been filed for probate. The estate is valued at $410,000, and the executors are Anis L. Lankershim, James B. Lankershim and I. N. Van Nuys. He left his property to be divided equally between his wife Anis L. Lankershim, his daughter Susana H. Van Nuys and James B. Lankershim, his son.
Mr. J. P. Zeyn has returned from a trip through Napa and Sonoma counties. As far as his observation extended the grape crop will be very good in these counties. The frost did little damage, except in a very few vineyards. The grain crop does not look any better than it does in this county.
L. H. Lieman of Bodie, has read the Gazette’s account of the big strawberries grown by Mr. Hinde and asks to be placed in communication with the grower. Mr. Lieman is a dealer in fruits, and is naturally anxious to get the handling of such fine berries.
A 198 foot well just completed on Mr. L. J. Rose’s ranch in San Gabriel valley, is said to flow 125,000 gallons of water per day. This is one of twenty-three wells on the same ranch, all of which yield a large supply of water.
The Marysville Appeal claims that a drayman of that city owns the identical woolly horse which Fremont rode to California in 1847, the animal now being about thirty-eight years old.
There are now 51,000 gallons of brandy stored in the bonded warehouse in Los Angeles. The internal revenue tax is ninety-two percent.

The most spiritedly contested debate of the year was that between Anaheim high and Pasadena high at the Los Angeles Polytechnic on Friday evening. Anaheim had won three of the year's debates, having defeated Pasadena once during the year. Pasadena had won two debates and lost one. It occupied second place in the high school debating league and had, according to the rules, the opportunity of debating with the leader for the high school championship. The question was—"Resolved, That the child-labor law should emanate from the national rather than state government." Anaheim had the affirmative. The Judges were Prof. Bovard, U. S. C., Prof. Millspaugh of the Los Angeles State Normal and Judge Curtis D. Wilbur of the Los Angeles Superior Court. Roy Firebaugh and John Smale represented Anaheim. They were accompanied by upward of 100 enthusiastic voters, boy and girl students as well as older members of society. Prof. J. F. Walger, principal of the school was with the debaters advising with them and counselling them up to the moment of the momentous struggle. The tellers made a mistake in their tallies and at first announced that Pasadena had won. Pasadena surrounded by a yelling pack of students left the hall taking the trophies with them. It was immediately discovered that a mistake had been made and Anaheim had won 50 5-8 to Pasadena 19 3-8. The matter was argued before the advisory board of the debating association in Los Angeles on Saturday. Prof. Walker appeared for his school. Pasadena was represented by three of that school's faculty. After the argument they yielded gracefully and Prof. Walker had the keen satisfaction of coming home with the trophies won. Anaheim thus wins the high school championship of Southern California. The debating team for Anaheim is Max Carmichael, Roy Firebaugh and John Smale. Anaheim has
Denies Demand For Bastanchury Sale
Bank Cannot Sell Property as Other Investing Interests Protected
Referee in Bankruptcy Ben F. Tarver last Friday morning denied the Bank of America's petition to dissolve a federal court restraining order preventing sale of the Bastanchury ranch. The bank's attorneys said that the bank represented 50 percent of the bond holders of the Bastanchury corporation, but in court only showed 25 percent. The property was ordered turned over to Ashby Turner, trustee in bankruptcy.
The Bank of America, trustees for holders of bonds totalling $1,170,000 sought permission to sell the property. In substance, it was pointed out, had the restraining order been permitted and sale of the ranch permitted, bondholders who had not deposited their bonds with that organization would have been left out in the event of sale of the home ranch property, of which the bank has held possession, along with unsecured creditors to the extent of $850,000, the holder of a trust deed amounting to $750,000 and the Standard Oil company with a $300,000 crop mortgage.
Summary Jurisdiction
In applying for dissolution of the restraining order, attorneys for the bank contended that the bankruptcy court had no jurisdiction in the matter in as much as the bank had possession of the property before the trustee in bankruptcy was appointed.
In continuing the restraining order Traver ruled that the bankruptcy court had summary jurisdiction. He gave his ruling on the theory that the bankruptcy court represented the Bastanchury company or the mortgagor and that the Bank of America trustees
surrounded by a yelling pack of students left the hall taking the trophies with them. Anaheim has defeated Santa Ana high, Throop, and Pasadena, twice. Anaheim will hold the Stanford cup a year. It will have the honor of having its name engraved upon it, and will contest for it again next year. The cup must be won three times in order to become the property of any one school. The cup was held last year by Monrovia and the year before by Long Beach. Since the organization of the debating league Anaheim high has participated in ten debates and has won ten.
The financial statement of the First National Bank will be found printed upon another page of this issue. The statement shows total resources aggregating $473,984 and total deposits of $389,773. This is the highest column of deposits so far officially reported by the bank, although a week or two ago the deposits exceeded $401,000. The upward tendency of the First National is a striking evidence of the financial expansion of the community. Its place is well up among the banks of Southern California and for solidity and sagacious management it is second to none. Its deposits show a steady growth, as its number of patrons are ever on the increase. This latest and best statement reflects honor upon its officers and directors who number some of the best men in the community.
Articles of incorporation have been filed by the Wickersheim Implement company. This company's headquarters are in Fullerton and the capital stock is $25,000. This company is organized to do a general retail implement and bicycle business.
Joseph Helmsen is decorating the interior of his store in a very handsome manner. The walls are papered in light blue. The ceiling has paper of a creamy tint and the interior is being painted, counters varnished and floor oiled. A new plate glass front has been installed and the establishment is one of the hand-somest in town.
The engagement is announced by O. A. Mullinix, the popular druggist and Miss Nona McWilliams, daughter of Mrs. H. A. McWilliams of this city. Miss McWilliams is a petite brunette as pretty as a picture and as lovable a girl as she is good looking. The happy groom to be has drawn a capital prize in the matrimonial lottery. The wedding takes place next month.
Adolph Thomas spent Sunday with his family in Los Angeles returning Monday morning. He has purchased the Chynowith property on North Los Angeles street, and as soon as he disposes of his property in Los Angeles will move his family here and take up his permanent residence.
He gave his ruling on the theory that the bankruptcy court represented the Bastanchury company or the mortgagor and that the Bank of America, as trustees under the trust deed securing the bonds, was the trustee and agent for both the bondholders and the bankrupt company.
Proven Oil Ground
The action today involved 2650 acres in the home ranch of the Bastanchury Corporation and indirectly involved the 200 acres operated under an agreement with the Union Oil company. This property, while not directly involved was affected to the extent that water on the property operated under agreement was so impregnated with minerals that it was unfit for irrigation and water from the home ranch was used. Also benefits from using the packing house on the home property saved 50 cents per box in handling the crop.
It was also brought out that half of the home ranch is proven oil territory and 350 additional acres are prospective oil territory.

Cato also called attention in his order to the need of strict enforcement of the law along highways paralleling grain fields.
