City Gains $15,864.17 In Cash During Year; Council Studies Finance Report Expenditures for Year 1931-32 Were $446,307.69. With Actual Collections Listed at $462,191.86; Cash on Hand $140,954.21; Reports of Various Departments Are Made Public John Knox Resigns as Mayor of Santa Ana Councilman Paul Witmer was unanimously elected mayor of Santa Ana Monday night when Mayor John Knox resigned to become a candidate for supervisor from the Santa Ana district. Knox stated that being mayor entailed great personal sacrifices and that he couldn't afford to retain the position longer. Horace Snow and William Penn are candidates to fill the vacancy on the council made upon Witmer's election to mayor. The vacancy will be filled Monday night. It was stated. Some men are in touch with their neighbors for all they will stand. Argentina is making a variety of paper from straw pulp. Vermont has been carried by every Republican nominee for president since the organization of the party. Jean Nicolet, a Lieutenant of Samuel de Champlain, is credited with the discovery of Lake Michigan in the summer of 1634. Total city income for the year ending April 30, 1932, was $587,261.90, with total expenditures for the same period of $446,307.69, while actual collections for the same time were $462,191.86, according to a report submitted to the city council Tuesday night by City Accountant A. G. Tuma. Cash on hand, City Treasurer Charles A. Böge reported, was $140,954.21 on May 1, 1932, as compared with $125,-090.04 last year, making a net gain of $15,864.17. General government expense was given as $42,706.25; protection. $55,-607.47; Sanitation, $36,375.75; recreation, $28,087.08; public utilities, $130,-287.29; city library, $18,761.30; redemptions, $70,042.45. Expenses of the street department for labor during the month of April totaled $3,297.51; electrical department, $1,665.13; park department, $1,794.15; shop labor, $347; engineering labor, $607.50; water department labor, $298 and storeroom expense $270.19 according to the monthly report of J. W. Price. Collections in the service department for the month were: light, $10,618.75; power $3,108.09 and water, $4,279.23 according to the report of W. J. Lake. Business licenses fees paid during the month totaled $216.50 Chief of Police James Bouldin reported. Chief Bouldin also reported 23 arrests; 74 citations for traffic violations; 26 citations for violations of the motor vehicle act, and the recovery of 9 stolen automobiles during the month. Fire Chief Nyboe reported three fires with damage totaling $1000. In the street department report J. W. Price reported collections of 242 loads of garbage, 48 loads of street sweepings; 1595 hours labor for trash collection; 435 hours for weed cleaning; 1463 hours for street maintenance; 112 hours labor on ranch No. 1, and 188 hours labor by the street superintendent. Council ordered warrants issued for current bills totaling $16,092.14. City Recorder Frank Tausch reported collections in his court totaling $802 during April. Ordinances given their first readings fixed the annual theater license in the city at $45, a reduction from $120; and amended sections 24, 30, 31, 32 and 33 of Ordinance No. 54 which provides a system of assessments, levy and collection of city taxes. Under this proposed legislation the chief of police must publish a notice within ten days after receipt of the assessment book warning that all personal tax and one-half of all property tax will be due November 1 and delinquent on December 5 and unless paid by that time will be subject to a 10 per cent penalty and that if one half is not paid before the following April an additional five per cent penalty will be added. On or before May 10 each year the chief of police must deliver to the city clerk a complete totaled list of delinquent taxes and before June 8 each year he must publish a complete list of all delinquent taxes. Mother’s Chorus On Radio Program Members Plan Pot Luck Dinner At Orange County Park On May 25 Following their successful appearance over radio KFOX last Sunday, Anaheim Mothers’ chorus members this week looked forward to a pot luck picnic-dinner to be held May 25 at Orange county park. The chorus sang in the Sunshine and Roses hour through arrangements completed by Mrs. Eva Terbest. The program included: “Salutation” (Gaines)); “Prayer Perfect” (Stenson; “Lullaby” (Brahms), by the chorus. Soprona solo; Mrs. Walter Ross "Songs My Mother Taught Me" (Dvorak); hymn, "My Mother's Old Bible Is True" (Gelbel), Mrs. John D. Zook and chorus. "Who Is Sylvia?" (Schubert); "To A Wild Rose" (McDowell); "Mother, My Dear" (Trehante), by the chorus. Under Directress Mrs. Walter Ross, with Mrs. H. H. Two services Sunday celebrate the Holy Communion, one at 8 and another at 11 a.m. Rev. Byron Holley of Los Angeles will be the principal speaker. This service will mark the 58th anniversary of the actual founding of the parish in Anaheim, although the first Sunday school work was started two years before, in September, 1879. Monday evening at 7:30 o’clock a series of talks are planned, interspersed with entertainment ranging from songs by the Elks Glee club to an old-fashioned fashion show at which members of the Agnes Guild will wear dresses of the mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers, as well as sing old-time songs of 20 to 50 years ago. Many Features One of the big features will be the introduction of “old timers” who will be a speaker, Rev. D. Howard Dow, rector, will talk, and Rev. Thomas Walker, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, the first church founded in Anaheim, will make a short address. Three persons who attended the first Sunday school service of the Episcopal church here are expected to attend the celebration Monday night. They are Mrs. E. M. Grimshaw, Mrs. L. E.
