IN LITTLE OLD NEW YORK
By CARL H. GETZ
Nearly 350,000 men and women in New York work underground. This includes men who work on the subway trains, platforms and ticket offices. Some buildings in New York have as many as six floors below the street level and on some of these floors are shops of various kinds.
The Cities Service Building in New York is the first building in the city to have double-deck two-story elevators, which take on and discharge passengers on two floors at once. And they are absolutely safe.
The Empire State Building here when entirely rented will house 25,000 tenants. The building consists of 86 floors of offices, 14 floors in tower, two subbasement floors—102 floors in all—is 1,250 feet high and was constructed at a cost of $55,000,000. Window washers never get through washing the 6,000 windows in the building. They work from the top down and when the first floor is reached they are ready to start over again.
The Waldorf-Astoria hotel has a radio in every room and is wired for television. Through the center of the building is a private driveway 90 feet wide by 200 feet long.
The largest hotel in the east is in Brooklyn. It is the St. George hotel and has 2,632 guest rooms.
The Equitable Building in New York better known as 120 Broadway, houses 16,000 persons.
Hardly a week passes in New York but what someone "buys" the Brooklyn Bridge or the New York Public Library for a few dollars. The other day an Italian "bought" the information stand in the Grand Central Station for a fruit stand. The "sale" was discovered when the poor man tried to back a push-cart full of bananas into the station.

Paint Demonstration Draws 720 in Two Days
One of the most encouraging demonstrations in the history of the Spencer Store, 166 West Center street, was held last week with Miss Miller, factory representative of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass company, in charge of coloring various household articles and giving housewives valuable tips on methods of beautifying the home.
Exactly 720 people attended the two-day demonstration, buying 243 cans of Waterspar and leaving seven orders for renovation and refinishing of homes. B. F. Spencer stated this week.
"Miss Miller told us that it was the best demonstration she had held in Southern California, and we can say it was the most successful one we have ever had during our 15 years of business in Anaheim," Mr. Spencer said.

Church Sermon for Sunday Announced
The Psalmist's words, "that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto 'God the Lord belong the issues from death,' constitute the Golden Text for the Christian Science Lesson-Sermon. Sunday, on the question 'Are Sin, Disease, and Death Real?' in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
One of the Scriptual selections in the Lesson-Sermon includes verses from The Acts of the Apostles: "And it came to pass, as Peter passed through all quarters, he came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda. And there he found a certain man named AEneas, which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of palsy. And Peter said unto him, AEneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately. And all that dwelt at Lydda and Saron saw him, and turned to the Lord."
A correlative passage from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, states, "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good."

Even Death Rate Drops During '70s
California's Demises Reach Lowest Ebb and Healthiest State in History
Like everything else in 1931, California's death rate dropped.
Paradoxical as it may seem, zens of this state found that when they didn't have as much money as formerly they apparently found other than worth living for, because fewer thousand of them answered the summons.
While Orange county's total some more populous districts where transients center, registered 1,270,exactly 30 deaths more than in 1930,the whole state's average dropped to tenths of one per cent. The state death rate is 11.3 per thousand,a all-time low.In 1931 there were 67,513 deaths as compared with 66,in 1930,but there was at the same time an estimated increase of 200,000 population, which brings the percentage its present figure.
Report Fewer Deaths
"Many counties reported fewer deaths last year, particularly in the mountain and agricultural districts where population is more or less stationary, the state department of public health report stated."At the same time populous counties, such as Santa Barbara,San Diego,Tulare,Kern,San Bernardino and Humboldt showedduced numbers of deaths in 1931.
"...In times of economic stress persons necessarily eat more simple foods and in general lead a more similar life. The effect of this condition noted at once.In the cases of person who might suffer from malnutrition, and,in some cases, exposure.as a result of these conditions the result would be less quickly noted.
"For many years a gradual decrease has occurred (in the death rate).1906 when state registration of death began, the rate was 14.4. It is or since 1938 that the
Highway Traffic Will Increase About 50 Percent During Next Decade, Claim
Federal Survey Reveals Prospective Growth of Federal-Aid Systems in 11 Western States; 15 Percent of Autos On Highways Visitors From Other States
Traffic on the federal-aid highway system in 11 western states will, in general, increase by 45 to 60 per cent in the period 1930 to 1940, according to a report issued by the bureau of public roads of the U.S. department of agriculture.
The federal-aid system is approximately 7 per cent of the total rural road mileage in each of these states and is made up of the important state and interestate routes.
Data Aids States
This report is the result of a traffic survey conducted from September, 1929 to 1930 in cooperation with the highway departments of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The investigation was undertaken to obtain essential facts about the present density, type, capacity and distribution of traffic units as a basis for planning highway development to serve present and future traffic. The data presented in the report may be used by each of the states as the basis for the preparation of a program of road construction, reconstruction and maintenance consistent with traffic requirements for each year up to 1940.
Figures Show Usefulness
The routes of the federal-aid system are classified as having light traffic when there are less than 600 vehicles per day; as having intermediate traffic when there are between 600 and 1500 vehicles per day; and as having heavy traffic when there are more than 1500 vehicles per day. In 1930, 11.3 per cent of the mileage carried heavy traffic, 18 per cent carried intermediate traffic and 65.9 per cent carried light traffic. For 1935 the indicated figures are 14.0 per cent, 22.1 per and 59.1 per cent. For 1940 they are 16.0 per cent, 25.0 per and 54.2 per cent. During the 10-year period the heavy traffic roads will increase by 1670 miles, the intermediate traffic roads by 2,534 miles and the light traffic roads of the federal-aid highway system will decrease by 4,204 miles.
Among the facts developed by the survey are the following: The annual travel of vehicles on the federal-aid system in the 11 States amounts to 8,100,000,000 miles. In six states vehicles from outside of the state constitute more than 20 per cent of the traffic and in three states they constitute more than 20 per cent of the total rural road mileage in each of these states and is made up of the important state and interestate routes.

Several housekeepers I know find it advisable to wash a goodly number of potatoes at a time. Scrub them with a brush, dry, sort and place in separate bags. When you want potatoes for boiling, use the smaller ones; when baking potatoes are needed, the large ones are already picked out. Much time is saved, and as every housekeeper knows time is worth saving. If there is to be any rest time for her.
A telephone directory for use in one's own home, which carries only the numbers one is apt to call often, is a saving of time and patience. Every 5 and 10 cent store has such little folders or books for ten cents each, using one of these, put down under the correct letter, the name of the person or firm with the telephone number, making it unnecessary to go through the large book each time a number is wanted.
Depression Effect On Women Students
Statistics on the living accommodations of 967 freshman women students at the University of California just released by Dr. Lucy W. Stebbins, dean of women, reveal that more women students are living in homes or working for board and room than during the spring of 1931, probably as an effect of the depression.
Figures for this year are as follows: living in homes, 627, or 64.9 per cent; in approved boarding houses, 122, or 12.6 per cent; at sororities and clubs, 103, or 10.7 per cent; with friends or relatives, 63 or 6.5 per cent; working for board and room, 37, or 3.8 per cent; at apartments or hotels, 7, or .7 per cent; at supplementary boarding houses, 7, or .7 per cent; and at International House, 1, or .1 per cent.
