Citrus Growers Attend Institute Three-day Sessions Held at Fulerton School; Many Specialists speak The citrus growers extension school opened up Tuesday morning with a large representative attendance from all parts of Orange county. The sessions were held in the auditorium of the Fullerton union high school, under the auspices of the University of California; extension service, and the citrus growers department of the farm bureau. J. W. Grill, president of the Orange county farm bureau, opened the session with greetings to growers assembled and explained how the extension service of the university, represented by the farm advisor in Orange county, functioned to submit authentic cultural and economic information to the farmers of the county. Irrigation of citrus orchards and soil analysis were the principal topics discussed the first day. Wednesday, beginning, at 10 o'clock spring fertilization for citrus orchards was explained in detail by W. R. Schoonover, citrus specialist. The value of cover crops in Orange county was a talk by Eric E. Eastman, and assistant farm advisor Harold E. Wahlberg, farm advisor, discussed "Reducing Production Costs to Meet Present Prices." Thursday's program, the last day of the institute, was to feature citrus pest control problems in Orange county by A. A. Brock, agricultural commissioner; citrus spraying by Dr. R. H. Smith; citrus fumigation by Prof. H. J. Quayle; Scaly Bark control by J. L. Hewitt, deputy agricultural commissioner. Christian Science Lesson-Sermon In the Christian Science denomination, "Soul" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon on Sunday. The same Lesson-Sermon is presented in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass. Among the Scriptural citations in the Lesson-Sermon is one that refers to Thomas' disbelief in Jesus' reappearance to the disciples after the crucifixion. The citation continues: "And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them; then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing." A correlative passage from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, says, "To the materialistic Thomas, looking for the ideal Saviour in matter instead of in Spirit and to the testimony of the material senses and the body, more than to Soul, for an earnest of immortality,—to him Jesus furnished the proof that he was unchanged by the crucifixion." ROBBERY WAVE IS FEARED BY POLICE Assessor Sleeper, seeing cash withdrawn from Orange county banks, has his eye on hoarded money and securities. The law gives him plenty of power in such cases, and clearly defines the measures that shall be taken to collect taxes upon it. When sleepers' deputies begin assessing March 1, they will have specific instructions to watch for lucre in sugar bows, tucked in mattresses, stuffed in over-stuffed upholstery, canceled in chandellers, and other places. If the assessor finds such wealth that hasn't been declared, he is empowered by law to levy stiff penalties. If he has reason to suspect hidden wealth, he can call for an affidavit and in case this is refused, he can use his own judgment in placing an estimate upon it up to ten times its actual value! Such property, undiscovered one year but found the next, is doubly assessed. Sleeper's Orders Statutes governing the assessor in listing personal property follow: Section 3649 of the political code: "Any property discovered by the assessor to have escaped assessment for the last preceding year if such property is under ownership or under the control of the same person who owned Section 3632: "The assessor shall have controlled it for the preceding year, may be assessed at double its value." power: 1—To require any peron—to make an idavit—whether he is the owner of an taxable property. 2—To subpoena and examine any person in relation to any statement furnished him, or which discloses property which is assessible—that may be stored with in possession of or controlled by such person—Every person who should refuse to furnish the statement—required—or to make uch idavit, or to appear and testify when requested—shall for each and every refusal—forfeited to the people of the state of California—the sum of $100. Section 2648: "Any property wilfully concealed, removed or transferred, or misrepresented by the owner or agent thereof to ovade taxation, upon discovery must be assessed at not more than ten times its value, and the assessment so made must not be reduced by the board of supervisors."
