Propagating Fish and Game Native to State Object of Fish and Game Group Propagating of fish and game natives to California, rather than costly experiments and research to determine whether foreign game will thrive in the state, will be the major activity of the California Fish & Game Commission under the administration of J. Dale Gentry, of San Bernardino, the new president of the commission. Mr. Gentry, recently named to the commission by Gov. James Rolph, Jr., is a practical sportsman with definite ideas as to improving the fishing and hunting for California’s sportsmen. “Rather than going to a great expense in research work to determine if foreign birds will thrive in California,” he said, “I’d favor concentrating on a program to develop native game that we know will live in our fields. It is my opinion that the hunter of California would be satisfied—and extremely so, with plenty of quail, duck and doves in the fields and trout in our mountain streams and lakes” Asks Ranchers to Aid The propagating of game, Mr. Gentry maintains, is a practical task and should be so attacked by the commission. He proposes to ask the cooperation of ranchers throughout the state in establishing comparatively small flocks of birds in many districts from which to replenish the flocks in the hunting grounds. The commission would, under Mr. Gentry’s program, provide game to be released where the birds would be protected until their flocks increased sufficiently to assure their thriving. The birds, when matured. Book Discusses Nectar Yielders Entomology Instructor Prepares Study That Will Aid Honey Producers of State Describing some 175 species of plants in California which are of sufficient importance as nectar yielders to be worthy of mention, the College of Agriculture has just issued a new bulletin, prepared by G. H. Vansell, associate in entomology, which is of particular interest to producers of honey. No other state, according to Vansell, has so rich and varied nectar-bearing flora as California. Of the entire number, the six most important sources of nectar in the state are the sages, alfalfa, orange, wild buckwheat, star thistle, and Christmas berry. It does not pay, states Vansell, “to raise plants specially for the honey which bees might obtain from them. About all than can be done in this direction is to encourage the growth of nectar-producing plants for other purposes, the honey crop being secondary. Some times it is feasible to scatter the seeds of desirable plants in waste lands suitable for their growth. An example of this is sweet clover which has be- would instinctively turn to the fields and ranges, there increasing the rapidly diminishing flocks. Game wardens would supervise the caring for the flocks, providing feed and water whenever necessary. "I know that in California there are hundreds of ranchers and landowners who will cooperate with the fish and game commission in an extensive, but practical, program of game propagating, said Mr. Gentry. "The cattle ranches, for instance, in the foothills and contiguous to the natural shooting grounds, can be used. I believe, as game farms far more efficiently than under the system of raising game in fenced farms, later to be released in strange surroundings. I believe that the practical sportsmen of the state will subscribe to this theory." Give Boys Opportunity. As to trout fishing, Mr. Gentry favors the establishing of hatcheries and rearing ponds along the major streams of California. It is his theory that trout raised to a sturdy size in the water of the stream will thrive in the stream and that the loss would be comparatively slight as compared with that when the fish are trapped, canned and transported to other streams and lakes. The replenishing of the trout streams and lakes of the state is, of course, one of the big tasks confronting the commission. It does not pay, states Vansell, "to raise plants specially for the honey which bees might obtain from them. About all than can be done in this direction is to encourage the growth of nectar-producing plants for other purposes, the honey crop being secondary. Some times it is feasible to scatter the seeds of desirable plants in waste lands suitable for their growth. An example of this is sweet clover which has become established along ditches in many sections partly through the efforts of those interested in beekeeping." The new bulletin, No. 517, entitled "Nectar and Pollen Plants of California" is available for free distribution by applying to the farm advisor in this county. Interest in home dressmaking is definitely on the increase and recent developments of fashion have made it especially attractive. Dresses are more elaborate with more of the so-called dressmaking touches that can be developed by any painstaking home dressmaker. There are new wool crepe dresses with drawnwork yokes, there are bands of hand-done embroidery in Persian coloring; there are ruffles, frills and flounces to tempt the ingenuity of the home dressmaker. The sketch today shows a charming dress on which ruffles, those beloved International School FOR JAN JESUS AND THE WOMEN John By REV. The game warden, Mr. Gentry believes, should be fore than a law enforcement officer. He should be an expert in the care and propagating of fish and game who can serve as a teacher or instructor for the youth of the state, interesting them in fishing and hunting. "The boy of today," he said, "lacks the opportunity of becoming a sportsman, or learning the habits of game and of following the trails that we enjoyed. I believe it an obligation of the fish and game commission to encourage him in becoming a true sportman that he may have a better understanding of outdoor life, of hunting and fishing, of conservation of game and the importance of observing natural laws. The problem of game conservation and propagation will be the boy's in a few years." Sandi- Doesn’t Damage Given in Normal Amounts, Trees Not Injured; Experiments Prove Shill Theory Making use of the respiration of citrus trees as a criterion of their general reaction to hydrocyanic gas, A. C. Shill, College of Agriculture of the University of California, has obtained definite experimental evidence that this commonly used fumigant when used in normal amounts, does not injure the trees, according to a recent report to the farm advisor’s office. Discussing his reason for making the experiment, Shill says: "Hydrocyanic acid gas fumigation has been fairly widely used during the past 40 years or more for the control of various scale insects attacking citrus. It has been the subject of much research but the work done has been directed principally along such lines as insect control and dosage application, the question of fundamental physiological effects being largely neglected. "With citrus it has been learned that in order to avoid damage to the tree, such as scorching of foliage, certain conditions relating, for instance, to light, heat, and humidity, must be fulfilled, but so far as the writer is aware no more detailed knowledge of physiological reactions is available." Shill carried out his tests by enclosing potted trees in an air-tight container and then making accurate measures of the amount of carbon dioxide given off by the trees both before and after treatment with the normal field dosage of hydrocyanic acid gas. His output of carbon-dioxide, which is a function of the health of the tree, showed a temporary increase after fumigation, but did not fall below normal. When double the normal dosage of hydrocyanic acid gas was used, however, the carbon dioxide output gave evidence that the tree was damaked. To help establish the reality of this incident let the writer refer to his visit in the Samaritan Colony, where just a remnant of only a few score now remain of those who were so despised by the Jews in that day. The very ancient Samaritan Pentetuch was shown me with marked pride. Their history dates back to the destruction of the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 B.C. The Passover ritual observed each year on Mt. Gerizim according to their own ancient rites. Otter the Jews would go far out of their way so as to avoid this region in proceeding to Galilee, but this time "He must needs pass through Samaria." The complete humanity of Jesus is evidenced in the lesson setting as the tired man sits at the side of Jacob's well. As the woman comes to draw water Jesus upon the personal work in accord with His own "Win One" method of procedure. Let any teacher or preacher who is distressed by reason of an audience of one or even a few only note how Jesus acted. Seeking a favor is often a helpful approach to open the opportunity to render real service in turn. Give me a drink, is commonplace, but it led to genuine salvation that day. Just as soon as the woman sensed the divinely spiritual relationship of this passing Jew he was canny in seeking His answer to the vexatious problem which kept Jews and Samaritans apart. "Where is the place to worship," she queried. Place is only an incident, for the vital fact is the Person Who is worshipped and how the approach is rightly made. She was informed that "God is a Spirit," and approach to His throne of mercy can be made from anywhere. Observe that the woman gave answering belief and proclaimed the truth.
