Bird Refuge for Orange County Is Recommended: 60 Varieties Found Bird Refuge for Orange County Is Recommended; 69 Varieties Found By ERIC E. EASTMAN One of the most important steps taken in recent years with respect to the preservation of bird life in Orange County was recently made by the Fountain Valley Land Owners' association, of which Louis Bushard is president. This association recommended that a study be made of the Santa Ana river channel, or right-of-way, by the U.S. Biological Survey in order to determine the feasibility and desirability of setting this area aside as a bird refuge. It is claimed that with the exception of plantings about scattered ranch houses, the river channel appears to be almost the only place in the southwest-ern part of the county where trees and underbrush are suitable for birds to nest. Unfavorable Conditions A reconnaissance inspection shows that this area is only a few feet wide on the average, on each side of the straightened channel, and that it is being hunted in whole or in part by men, boys and dogs almost continuously. It is also unofficially reported that a large part of the channel by the government have either been destroyed or prevented from resting by hunters and others. It is also thought that in like manner varieties of beneficial birds are being destroyed or prevented from nesting and maturing their broods. These were the principal institutions which induced the Bounty Land Owners' association for a study of the area Biological Survey, in order to find the facts and, if desired, outlining a program winnantly preserve and valuable bird population. The office was required to test the facts in the case of the assistance of the Bounty Survey. In response to this Piper in charge of the Bounty Area, made a preliminary Orange county and inspected as a bird refuges with representatives of Valley association and its visitor's office, in order to his mind the boundaries to get the local viewpoint lined steps in the work set aside the area as a borough of the principal items listing of data on bird both resident and migratory are interested in setting as a bird refuge are required communicate with the staff. A New Hope With customary optimism, the American people have turned the page of the new year with the thought, "Well, things are going to be better from now on." Their reasoning is sound. The basic sources of prosperity are still here. It is only the surface that has been disturbed. Our farms will continue to produce crops, our factories will continue to make useful goods, our forests and mines will continue to yield their wealth, our trains and trucks and boats will continue to carry on and our electric plants will continue to supply the innumerable needs for light and power in this great land. The Southern California Edison Company is well prepared to do its full share in supplying abundant and reliable electric service to the farms, factories, mines, railroads, stores and homes of this region whose forward march of prosperity refuses to be long delayed. Southern California Edison Company Ltd. HINTS FOR THE HOUSE BY NANCY KALI Cauliflower Dumplings Cauliflower dumplings can be made from left-over cauliflower. Put the pieces of cauliflower through a vegetable ricer and add a little salt, pepper, mace, melted butter and milk. Add a beaten egg and enough farina to make the mixture firm. Mould into small balls and boil them for six minutes in clear stock or bouillon. Serve half a dozen as vegetable, to each person or make them smaller and serve them instead of croutons in the soup in which they are boiled. Stuffed Cauliflower Stuffed cauliflower is made of a head of cauliflower boiled whole until it is tender. It should then be dropped in cold water to blanch and then the heart should be cut out and chopped with half a dozen mushrooms and some cayenne pepper. Put the stuffing in the cavity in the head and put the whole on a hot dish, covered with a piece of cheesecloth, in the oven for a movement to heat. Do the work quickly so that the cauliflower will not need much heating. Serve with white sauce. Indian Bread Mix thoroughly the following ingredients: One cup of white corn meal, one cup of yellow corn meal, one teaspoonful of cayenne and one cup of chopped suet. Add a cup of cold water and stir thoroughly. Form this batter into rolls about five inches long, roll in greased paper and bake moderately for an hour. They should be served hot. According to the government report it was the custom of the Indians to bake these cakes by rolling them in husks of corn, a practice which is recommended to campers. These were the principal considerations which induced the Fountain Valley Land Owners' association to petition for a study of the area by the U. S. Biological Survey, in order to ascertain the facts and, if desirable, to assist in outlining a program which will permanently preserve and increase our valuable bird population. The farm advisor's office was requested to ascertain the facts in the case and to secure the assistance of the U. S. Biological Survey. In response to this request, S. E Piper in charge of the survey work in this area made a preliminary visit to Orange county and inspected the area proposed as a bird refuge in company with representatives of the Fountain Valley association and the farm advisor's office, in order to clearly fix in his mind the boundaries proposed and to get the local viewpoint. Piper outlined steps in the work to be done to set aside the area as a bird refuge. One of the principal items listed was the securing of data on bird life in the area both resident and migratory. All who are interested in setting aside the area as a bird refuge are requested to communicate with the farm advisor's office, and anyone with definite information opposing the plan is also asked to communicate with the same office.
