Equipment Needed On Snowy Trips
Motorists contemplating trips to the "snow line" or any other part of California where roads are covered with snow and ice are urged by E. Raymond Cato, chief of the California Highway Patrol, to equip themselves properly before starting.
Chains, ropes and shovels are practically indispensable in making such trips. Over some of the high mountain passes, such as the Donner Summit, highway patrol officers have been instructed to compel motorists to turn back who are not equipped with chains.
During the last few days several heavy trucks have slid backwards over embankments in attempting to climb wet or snow-covered roads without chains.
One danger to drivers unaccustomed to driving in the snow is side-slipping. It is very easy for a vehicle to slide sideways completely out of the road.
Motorists traveling in snowy regions should carry a quantity of rope, particularly if not supplied with tire chains. Such rope may be bound around the tire to aid in giving it traction should the vehicle become stuck in the snow or mud. A shovel is practically a necessary yin travelling in regions where deep snow is likely to be encountered.
800 Men Given Work on 1933 Auto Plates
Another step toward relieving unemployment was taken by the state this week with the announcement that immediate work would start on the manufacture of motor vehicle license plates to be used in California in 1933.
The announcement said this would provide work for between 800 and 900 men during the next three months or during the time when the need for jobs is greatest. Workers in at least five cities, it was stated, will benefit. Steel work will be done in Pittsburg, Contra Costa county, finishing work in Oakland, paint and envelope production in San Francisco, carton manufacture in Stockton and preparation of applications and forms at the state printing plant in Sacramento.
Plates to be used in 1933 will be black backgrounds with orange letters. This color combination is being used because tests made by Columbia university experts show it provides the greatest degree of visibility.
