The present status of the industry in Orange county was reviewed by the executive committee of the farm bureau avocado department held recently in the farm advisors office. Members of the committee, representing the principal avocado districts of the county estimate that there are some 2000 acres at the present time that would make potential avocado acreage. That is land that has water available and favorably adapted as to soil and climatic conditions. Center St., Anaheim—Phone 3621 Grid Fans Watch Heavy Artillery Backfield Strength of Troy and Tulane May Determine Game Although football battles are primarily struggles in the front line trenches between the lines, the heavy artillery of the Trojan and Green Wave backfields will undoubtedly come in for most of the attention when Southern California and Tulane meet Jan. 1 in the Pasadena Rose Bowl. While Southern California has a starting backfield consisting entirely of experienced seniors, Tulane has an all-triple threat set of backs. Trojan backs are specialists, with Halfbacks Erny Pinckert and Tom Mallory leading the way with their blocking, Fullback Jim Musick smashing the line close to the center, and Gus Shaver presenting almost any kind of an attack from the triple-threat quarterback spot. Both Strong in Reserve Tulane backs stress versatility and deception. Anyone of them can take the ball and kick, pass or run, although Left Half Don Zimmerman has proven the principal triple-threat and handles the ball most of the time. Lowell (Red) Dawson is a quarterback with a wide reputation as a field general and with great ability as a blocker. Fullback Nollie (Papa) Felts combines line plunging ability with unusual speed for a powerful hitter. Right Half Harry Glover is an all-round star said by Tulane followers to be as able as Left Half Zimmerman whose splendid passing and running have been features of every Green Wave game this season. Besides good men in the lineups, both teams have subs considered just as able as the opener. Orv Mohler is considered by Coach Jones sto be a Trojan first string quarterback along with Shaver, and when Mohler goes in the game Shaver shifts to fullback. The combination of Mohler at quarter and Shaver at full has proven unstoppable in recent Trojan games and Tulane expects a busy time when this duo works together. Paper-Hanging Trio Convicted and Fined Because the Anaheim shoe merchant victimized by three short change artists was unable to explain exactly how it happened, Arthur Jenkins was sentenced by Judge Frank Tausch to spend six months in jail, while Joseph Lynch alias Joseph Ryan, and Joseph Donahue, were fined $35 each. Jenkins pleaded guilty to petty theft, while the other two were tried on vagrancy charges. Jenkins, according to Fingerprint Expert Herman Zabel, has been convicted seven times and once served a term in San Quentin prison for burglary. If the victimized merchant had been able to describe the procedure the trio worked, more serious charges would have been preferred against them, according to the police. When you choose a kitchen cabinet see that it is well-made, and mouse-proof; that the material of which it is made is easy to clean; and that the drawers and compartments are suitable in size and shape for the articles you will want to store in them. These stamps show Washington as he was painted at different times in his life by different artists. The one-half cent stamp is dark brown in color, bearing the likeness of Washington painted by Charles Wilson Peale, the original of which is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The one-cent stamp, printed in green is a reproduction of the profile bust by Houdon made in 1785 and now among the treasures at Mount Vernon. The one and one-half cent stamp is light brown featuring another Peale portrait of Washington known as the Virginia colonel, now in possession of Washington and Lee university at Lexington, Virginia. Gilbert Portrait The stamp which the public will become most familiar with, because of its use on most mail, is the two-cent bearing the likeness of George Washington already best known, the Gilbert Stuart Athenaeum portrait done at Germantown in 1796. Already this portrait has become generally known among Americans because of its use on the one-dollar bill. The color of the three cent stamp is purple and it bears a reproduction of the Peale portrait painted at Valley Forge in 1777 showing Washington in the uniform of a general with a cocked hat. Another Peale portrait done the same year, known as the Rhineback Portrait, will appear on the four-cent stamp in warm brown. The six-cent stamp in orange shows the portrait painted by Trumbull in 1792. The head and bust of the Trumbull portrait done in 1780 appears on the seven-cent stamp in black, while the eight-cent of olive green is a reproduction of the crayon drawing by Charles B. J. F. Saint-Memin. The nine-cent stamp is pink showing a reproduction of the pastel portrait painted from life by W. Williams in 1794, while the last of the series, the ten-cent stamp is orange in color and the portrait is taken from the Gilbert Stuart painting made in 1795, known as the Vaughan portrait.
