Others Seeking Tourist “Trade”
California Now Has Strong Competition in United States and Foreign Lands
The Southern California’s tourist attractions are facing a greater world competition than ever before is shown in a survey completed in New York by President Sylvester L. Weaver of the All-Year Club, and announced upon his return.
381 Strong Competitors
“Southern California was one of the first communities to merchandise its sunshine and climate as a tourist ‘lure,’ but now there are 329 United States resorts and 52 foreign governments officially in the business conducting international advertising campaigns and other forms of promotion,” said Mr. Weaver.
“Nearly all European tourist resorts, many under government supervision, have established branch offices in New York especially designed for the distribution of information, propaganda and advertising to prospective American vacationists.
‘Russia’s tourist propaganda stresses winter trips and hunting expeditions via trains equipped with shower baths, barbers, etc. The Soviet government has opened for tourist inspection the $264,000,000 collection of crown jewels.
Job Seekers Not Wanted
“Steamship rates to Europe have been reduced 10 to 30 percent and a Minister of Tourism in the French cabinet is teaching merchants of that country the folly of overcharging American visitors. Paris is advertising a two-weeks trip for $100 with 15 suggested itineraries.
“The All-Year Club is now in the midst of an aggressive national advertising campaign inviting well-financed winter tourists, but warning job-seekers not to come here.”
Christian Science Lesson-Sermon
A Lesson-Sermon on "Soul and Body" will be presented on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
Among the Bible citations in the Lesson-Sermon are the following verses from John: "Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body."
A passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, says of the Master's opponents: "When Jesus spoke of reproducing his body—knowing, as he did, that Mind was the builder—and said, 'Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,' they thought that he meant their material temple instead of his body—This materialism lost eight of the true Jesus; but the faithful Mary saw him, and he presented to her, more than ever before, the true idea of Life and substance."
For Thanksgiving
"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." These words of Paul to the Thessalonians constitute the Golden Text in the Christian Science Lesson-Sermon for Thanksgiving Day in branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
The Lesson-Sermon consists of verses from the Bible and correlative passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy.
Among the Scriptural passages are these promises of God, as presented in Levitius: "If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; then I will give you rain in due season and the land shall yield her in abundance."
Large Audiences at Demonstration
Approximately 1,000 people attend the two-day demonstration of pain and varnishes at the Spencer Store, 10 West Center street, according to Manager B. F. Spencer. The demonstration was under the direction of Miss Mille factory representative for the Pittsburgh Plate Glass company.
Miss Miller said that the local demonstration was the most successful she had had in Southern California, where the exception of Los Angeles, where course, more people witnessed the e

Lucero & Gonzales Going to Move
A. R. Gonzales, manager of Lucero & Gonzales Anaheim store located for three years at 117 East Center street, this week announced that the local store will be moved across the street to 138 East Center street before the first of the year.
"We are moving to a new location in order to secure much-needed larger quarters where we can add a greater variety of stock and more fully meet the needs of our many customers," Mr. Gonzales said. "We met with a warm reception by Anaheim residents when we opened our local store, and we are making every effort to merit this support."
VERY LATEST by MARY MARSHALL
The Lesson-Sermon consists of verses from the Bible and correlative passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy.
Among the Scriptural passages are these promises of God, as presented in Levitius: "If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time; and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely." The Lesson-Sermon includes also the assurances from the Psalms: "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him."
A selection from the Preface of Science and Health cities Mrs. Eddy's words, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."
Reports from St. Louis declare that business touched bottom there and stared to improve on October 5. Wasn't that the day that Pepper Martin got his home run?

Three Good Reasons
There is no doubt about the fact that the dresses we buy ready made are much more ornamented with buttons of some sort than they were during the decade following the war.
You may buy metal buttons to match or to contrast with your dress or you may use fabric-covered buttons to match the dress or of the contrasting trimming material. You may have buttons covered with the material of your dress at no very great cost at dress-maker service places or with a little diligence you may cover them yourself. It is best to use wooden button moulds, but on a pinch you can use those very inexpensive bone buttons of the sort that are used on children's underwear.
If your material is very sheer you should first pad the buttons with a coarse cotton or sheer wool material of somewhat the same shade. Cut the padding and the outside, covering in the form of a circle with a diameter nearly twice the diameter of the button. Gather first around the edge of the padding and slip the button into the little bag thus formed. Draw up the draw strings and overcast to give a flat foundation.
Gather up the button cover with matching thread, insert the padded button, and draw up the draw strings, overcast, trimming off any rough edges, and the button is ready to sew into position. Buttons may be used on cuffs, belts, collars, or they may follow the diagonal line of the bolderies of the dress as shown in the sketch.

"Citrus Growers are turning to the Exchange!"
KNOW that I speak for every Exchange grower when I tell you how glad I am you've come in with us.
The past month has been a big one for Exchange membership. Just recently, three private organizations joined the majority. That's 235 new Exchange growers. Around 100 new cars of Exchange citrus for the coming year. Nearly 2300 acres of new Sunkist trees. And that's not counting the individual growers who joined during the same period.
"We're all glad to see the Exchange grow—particularly at this time. We need increased ability. We need more orderly distribution. We need an increased demand for our product. And the more united the citrus industry is, the better we'll be able to accomplish these ends."
"The Exchange was founded during times of stress. And now that the going is tough in the need for the Exchange is apparent all."
"Last year the citrus industry did a big job. Did 9,000 more cars of citrus than ever were sold before. There's another big crop ahead another big job. No one will say what the market will do."
But with you—with more citrus growers than ever—realizing that one, big united cooperative is best able to handle the citrus crop, we're in better position than ever to face the future with confidence!"
If not now a member—Learn why it is that Exchange growers, year after year, get the highest returns for their crops. Talk to the manager of the nearest of the Exchange's 217 local associations or 23 District Exchanges. Or write, Growers Service Bureau, Box 530, Station C, Los Angeles.
