WHAT IS HOME
WITHOUT A GARDEN?
GOLDEN POPIES ON THE GOLDEN WEST
The name poppy seems generally to suggest a flower with a single ray of petals, but there are double, semidouble, tall and dwarf types in great variety. In fact there is color, form, and growth habit to suit most any garden requirement, be it for back ground, border, nook or colorful mass display.
Due to the popularity of the flower, hybridists have made efforts to bring new forms and colors into being, and particularly, in the race of poppies known as Eschscholtzias, great improvement has been made in recent years. Striking new colors are evidenced in such varieties as Vesuvius, Mauve Beauty, Orange Flame, Scarlet Flame, Scarlet Beauty, Purple Glow, and others.
Poppy planting time begins with the fall rains in the milder regions of the western coast, and continues throughout the winter and early spring months. They resent transplanting and there is usually a great loss of plants when this is attempted, therefore the seeds should be sown where the plants are to remain. This is true of all poppies, including the lovely Shirleys and the perennial poppies. The seeds are so small that it is well to mix them with sand at the time of sowing. Even when this precaution is taken, it may result in the seeds being planted too thickly. While they will stand being cowed to some extent, it is well to thin out and so give the individual plants sufficient room to do their best.
A new Shirley Poppy called American Legion is a brilliant orange scarlet with yellow anthers. The flowers are semi-double, and well fringed. The is about the time the Bee finishes its summer grazing still sufficiently warm the mination and rapid growers seeded lawn may be obtained.
Blue grass, white clover of the perennial rye grass very successfully for land regardless of climate exert summers are excessively seedsmen who are familiar climatic conditions very mixtures of fine bladed are most satisfactory for In the smaller seed gray blue grass and clover, pounds of seed is required square 10 by 20 feet, and grass seeds at the rate pound to 10 by 10 for there are more of the same pound, and fewer of grass seeds per pound.
The newly planted manure contaminated by the us manure, which may contain of weed seeds. A mulch or to hold the moisture is should be a material the weed seeds if possible. Where peat humus or lea tinable, these are excels for this purpose.
Lawn grasses are voracious and to keep them in the at all times considera chemical or otherwise applied at regular interval.

A new Shirley Poppy called American Legion is a brilliant orange scarlet with yellow anthers. The flowers are semi-double, and well fringed. The plants grow to a height of two or three feet, and bear an immense profusion of blooms.
Another interesting class of poppies is the tall double variety, including the carnation-flowered double, the peony-flowered, and the new tall double poppy recently introduced as Salmon Shades Irresistible. Ordinarily these will grow to a height of three to four feet, producing a mass of most attractive flowers. Cut while in bud form, or just as the buds begin to show color, they will open fully when placed in water, and provide a very nice cut flower.
Poppies are not particular as to soil and will thrive under ordinary garden cultivation. With poppies in the garden, spring is ushered in most colorfully.
A VELVETY GREEN LAWN
Regardless of climate the ideal lawn planting time is now. This applies to all sections of the Pacific states—in the milder regions, the blue grass and clover lawns will remain green throughout the winter, and where the climate is more severe, the root system of the newly sown grass will become established and provide the velvety greensward in the early spring.
In climates similar to that of Southern California, October seems to be the best month for renovating, as this

is about the time the Bermuda grass is finishing its summer growth and it is still sufficiently warm that quick germination and rapid growth of the newly seeded lawn may be obtained.
Blue grass, white clover, and several of the perennial rye grasses are used very successfully for lawns generally regardless of climate except where the summers are excessively warm. Local seedsmen who are familiar with the climatic conditions very often provide mixtures of fine bladed grasses which are most satisfactory for the purpose. In the smaller seed grasses, such as blue grass and clover, one and a half pounds of seed is required to sow a square 10 by 20 feet, and the larger rye grass seeds at the rate of about one pound to 10 by 10 for the reason that there are more of the smaller seeds in one pound, and fewer of the larger rye grass seeds per pound.
The newly planted lawn is often contaminated by the use of barnyard manure, which may contain many kilhs of weed seeds. A mulch of light material to hold the moisture is practical, but it should be a material that is free of weed seeds if possible. In localities where peat humus or leaf mold is obtainable, these are excellent materials for this purpose.
Lawn grasses are voracious feeders, and to keep them in the best condition at all times considerable fertilizer, chemical or otherwise, should be applied at regular intervals.
POTATOES IN STORAGE
Potatoes to be held for table use are best stored at a temperature of from 40 degrees to 50 degrees F. If kept at lower temperatures they will become more or less sweet, rendering them unpalatable to most people. However, if it is desired to keep them longer than 4 to 6 months they will begin to sprout and at that time the storage temperature should be lowered to from 36 degrees to 38 degrees, where they will keep dormant indefinitely. Most of the sweetness resulting from storage at these temperatures will disappear after 4 or 5 days at ordinary room temperatures. Sack stock may be handled the same as table stock.
HINTS FOR THE HOME BY NANCY HART
An electric waffle iron should never be greased. If the waffles stick, try adding one or two extra tablespoon of melted shortening to the batter.
Soaking any kind of fresh meat in water before cooking is a mistake. It draws out the juices which give the characteristic flavor and adds to its food value. If the meat needs cleaning, wipe it off with a damp cloth or trim it.
If you are using figured curtains in a room, choose a material with a background the same color as the walls but slightly darker. The principal color in the design of the curtain material should repeat the color of the rug or upholstery. Use figured curtains only when the walls give a plain effect.
When you buy a shoulder of lamb, have the butter remove the shoulder blade. Stuff the cavity with any good bread crumb stuffing, or with one made from a mixture of bread crumbs, chopped spinach and onion, seasoned with salt and pepper.
Stains from chocolate and cocoa are composed of fat, resinous coloring matter fibrous material, starch, sugar, and sometimes milk solids. None of these stains are set by hot water, so if the material is washable, soap and hot water are the only treatment necessary. Wood alcohol made alkaline with ammonia is also effective. If the fabric is not washable grease solvents, such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, and others will dissolve the fatty part of the stain, and the remainder can be removed by hydrogen peroxide.
Use cold water first on egg stains, then hot water and soap. If the yolk leaves a grease spot use carbon tetrachloride or some other grease solvent after
Outlook Good for Quail "Crop"
An abstract of the game laws from the State Division of Fish and Game shows that the quail season opened in all districts except 11-2 on November 15 and closes in all districts, with the exception of 11-2, on December 15. In district 11-2, which includes Humboldt, Del Norte and the western portion of Siskiyou counties, the season opened on Nov. 1 and closes Dec. 31.
From all indications the present quail season promises to furnish some exe
Try baking sweet potatoes and apples together. First boll the sweet potatoes in their skins. Peel and slice. Arrange in a baking dish with alternate layers of sliced apple. Sprinkle each layer with brown sugar and dots of butter. Put about half a cup of water in the bottom of the baking dish. Finish the dish with a layer of sweet potatoes, over which brown sugar and buttered crumbs should be spread. Bake until apples are done and the top is brown.
To make good fried oysters, dip them in egg and bread crumbs some time before they are to be fried. This gives the coating a chance to harden and the oysters will fry better.
An oval ring mold is easier to turn out on a platter than a round one.
Use cold water first on egg stains, then hot water and soap. If the yolk leaves a grease spot use carbontetrachloride or some other grease solvent after sponging with cold water and allowing the stained place to dry.
If the lower part of the kitchen wall, which receives the hardest wear and gets soiled soonest, is marked off four or five feet above the floor by a wooden strip and painted or stained a different tone from the rest of the wall, that part can be cleaned or refinished without making the upper wall look shabby.

The present quailURNish some excellent sport for the hunter; game officials said. Sportsmen who have had occasion to travel in sections where there was good quail cover have reported many fine young birds during the summer months.
Water shortage may cause the birds to concentrate in some localities, according to E. L. Macaulay, chief of patrol, and the game wardens will keep close watch to see that bag limits are held in check.
The bag limit on valley and desert quail is 15 per day and 30 per week. Macaulay said, while for mountain quail it is 10 per day and 20 per week. Hunters are cautioned to adhere strictly to these laws.
