California Joins
In Apple Week
"Nibble an apple a day!" is the slogan of Southern California apple growers, who are helping the nation to celebrate National Apple week. In California the apple is becoming one of the leading products of the state. This year's crop will total more than 9,000,000 bushels according to figures compiled by the agricultural department of the Union Pacific railroad. There are more than 55,000 acres of apples now under cultivation in the state.
Apples are selling generally throughout California at the lowest figure in 18 years. Aside from this, one of the best quality crops of more uniform grade than ever before is being offered in the markets of the state.
California apple packing plants resemble modern machine equipped factories. For this reason the uniform size and quality in each box is outstanding and making the industry one of the leaders in California.
Today apples are sorted, graded, washed, dried, polished, and packed mechanically. They come in boxes from 48 to 225 per box. The price range generally throughout the state for the present crop is from $1.25 to $1.50 per box.

Hungarian Birds Show an Increase
Hungarian partridges appear to be increasing rapidly in Fresno county, according to George W. Pierson, rancher.
This species of upland game bird was released on the Pierson ranch during the past year by August Bade, superintendent of State game farms at both Yountville and Chino. The rancher reported that he counted between 50 and 75 birds in one canyon where there was a spring and some green feed.
Mr. Pierson also said that "At other points on the ranch and down through the valley I have seen other small num-
venge injected into many of the hunts, says the State Division of Fish and Game.
But sportsman must not forget to credit Bruin with being a very wise hombre for contact with man during vacation time hasn't simplified affairs, and a clear knowledge of territory should be obtained before a hunt is contemplated.
As the bear is a fur-bearing mammal and there is a plentiful supply, no bag limit has been set for this coming season. However, the division officials have appealed to trappers and sportsmen not to take more of the game than they can actually utilize. This will not only prevent waste of a natural resource but will eliminate unnecessary

Mr. Pierson also said that "At other points on the ranch and down through the valley I have seen other small numbers of Hungarian partridges and I feel satisfied that there has been a nice increase of these birds during the season."
The Hungarian partridge, known in Europe as the grey partridge, is considered by many sportsmen as the best game bird of all, Mr. Bade said. In the state of Washington a check showed that they multiply just twice as fast as pheasant or quail. Their broods, according to that check, averaged 16 while quail and pheasant could do no better than eight. These figures are for matured families and not the number hatched, the superintendent states.
In discussing the habits of these game birds, Mr. Bade said: "The average nest of the Hungarian partridge will contain at least 20 eggs and the larger percentage of matured birds from that hatching is due mostly to better care on the part of the parents.
Very few birds show much practical knowledge of how a family should be reared. Both parents have an equal share in the family life and this care and guidance continues until the family breaks up during the following spring for the mating season. At no time in the history of the family they come together in flocks, but remain as separate family units.
"This practice leads to a wider distribution of the birds over any given area, as one family will battle another for the territory selected as their own. When this trait is understood it is easy to see why, with their prolific production, they will populate a given area sooner than any other game bird. The fact that Hungarian partridges will not flush from cover at the approach of some one of its enemies of the air should also prove to be a valuable factor in adding this bird in its bid for existence."
Old Mr. Bruin's Day of Judgment
If Mr. Bruin is a wise bear he had better be making plans to lead the members of his tribe over the mountain because a "day of judgment" is fast drawing near, for the hunting season on bear and other fur animals will open throughout the state on November 15 and will remain open until including the last day of February, 1932.
From all indications Mr. Bruin has been having a glorious time throughout credit Bruin with being a very wise hombre for contact with man during vacation time hasn't simplified affairs, and a clear knowledge of territory should be obtained before a hunt is contemplated.
As the bear is a fur-bearing mammal and there is a plentiful supply, no bag limit has been set for this coming season. However, the division officials have appealed to trappers and sportsmen not to take more of the game than they can actually utilize. This will not only prevent waste of a natural resource but will eliminate unnecessary losses in the bear population.
Sportsmen who are successful in their quest for a bear should not eat the meat until it has been thoroughly cooked. This will eliminate the possibility of contracting trichinosis in case the animal happens to be infected. If cooked there is no more danger in eating bear meat than there is in eating pork or any other carnivorous animal. Also, don't feed the raw bear meat to your dog because he is liable to become infected.
Californians Still Buying Motor Cars
Californians continue to buy automobiles in spite of depression talk.
A report to Daniel J. O'Brien, director of motor vehicles, shows a gain of 26-519 in registrations for the first nine months of 1931 as compared with the same period of 1930.
During this period, the division of registration registered 2,111,310 vehicles of all classifications and collected $9-281,633 in fees.
For the same period the division handled 726,166 transfers, a gain of 18-648, thus securing conclusive proof that plenty of cars are changing hands in the state.
Registrations for the period were given as follows: Automobiles, 1,910-026, a gain of 12,219; pneumatic trucks, 90,966, a gain of 11,188; solid trucks, 11,116, a loss of 4,183; motorcycles, 8-661, a loss of 312; pneumatic trailers, 44,633, a gain of 7,676; solid trailers, 8,106, a gain of 1,215.
There were several thousand additional registrations in exempt vehicles.
Non-resident permits issued for the period totaled 74,099.
"We are pleased to see a very substantial increase in registrations in California in a period when most states have reported a loss." Bevans' report said. "It proves that California has been a favored spot and has continued to enjoy a fair amount of prosperity in the depression."

Oil Center at Garden Grove
Mr. Cole recalls when that area of Orange county known as the "Peatlands" was a waste of willow, tules and wild celery and the subsequent draining and reclamation of this land, which led to the rise of the celery industry in the county. He recalls the excitement when a nail for extracting eucalyptus oil was established in Garden/Grove and there was high hope of making this an oll center.
Mr. Cole farmed up until 1920 when a large company offered to rent his place. At the end of a year he says he found he had as large a return as when he had been doing his own farming.
Old and New
His place presents a striking contrast of old and new. The little frame house with its background of huge eucalyptus and pepper trees, its horseshoe-shaped drive, its orchard of gnarled old fruit trees and its weather-beaten barn stand in the midst of tractor-cultivated fields that come to the very edges of the dooryard. Tractors chug away on every hand, a procession of beachbound automobiles moves along this highway, airplanes of the San Diego-Los Angles lines roar overhead. But Mr. and Mrs. Cole sit on their cool, shady porch and calmly watch it all. They like their bit of early California and they want no change.
Operators' License "Good Until Revoked"
The State department of motor vehicles announces that the department has no intention of requiring the renewal of operators' license issued between January 1, 1827, and August 14, 1929, for several months at least. The license are still valid as they bear the words "good until revoked."
Russell Bevans, registrar of the department says it would cost the department a large sum to renew the license at this time since there were several hundred thousand issued as "good until revoked."
But licenses issued after August 14, 1929 are good only for two years and must be renewed, Mr. Bevans said.
Bruin has been having a glorious time throughout the past year. Many a camper has felt material losses from his food plifering habits so there may be a spirit of re-

ENTHUSIASM
If you can't get enthusiastic about your work, let them get alarmed. Something is wrong.
Compete with yours by putting your teeth and dive into the job, beating your own record.
No man keeps up unless genuinely enthusiastic.
Enthusiasm must be nourished with new actions, new aspirations, new forts, new vision.
It is a man's own fault if his enthusiasm is gone; he has failed to feed it.
And right here is the big reason why thousands of men hit high-water marks at thirty-five and then recede.
They can do their work with their eyes shut, and that is in any way they do it.
They have lost the driving power of enthusiasm.
They keep at the switch of their eye in life. Is the face of the time clock. All they hear is the quiet noise.
If you want to turn hours into minutes, renew your enthusiasm.
