Taylor, 3-20too Early Fall Work in Walnut Groves The harvest season will soon be completed in practically all walnut orchards in Orange county. There are several steps to which the grower must give consideration in this early fall season. Among the most important is post-harvest irrigation, according to Harold E. Wahlberg, farm advisor. Examinations of soils in several orchards have shown that the moisture conditions are unsatisfactory and will become increasingly so if the weather remains dry and warm. Leaf drop has not been heavy where adequate moisture has been present. An irrigation of from three to five inches will prevent trees losing their leaves before normal dormancy approaches. It also will make more efficient any early rainfall which may occur. In connection with this irrigation it is well to consider the subject of pruning and planting of cover crops. It would be better to irrigate the land before pruning is done as the delay incurred in case the soil was lined to be dry would probably result in leaf drop from drought. Pruning can well be postponed until November, with cover crop planting immediately following. In districts subject to winds, growers often delay irrigation until after the wind period. In such cases the pruning and irrigation operations may be reversed. Many growers are finding their trees too close together for the greatest efficiency and must plan on thinning the orchard in order to eliminate the crowded condition. It is a well recognized fact that trees which are crowded do not grow as rapidly or produce the tonnage of walnuts possible when adequate sunlight is available. Definite plans for thinning should be made along with the fall pruning scheme. The Farm Advisor has accumulated considerable yield data during the past decade, conclusively showing increased production and quality from a judicious thinning out of crowded walnut orchards. Plan to Increase Latest Fire Equipment Los Angeles firemen are being equipped with breathing apparatus so they can walk through oil well flames. Two Theatres in Unemployment Benefit The Anaheim Fox and Fairyland theatre are joining in the nation-wide movement to give unemployment benefit shows on Nov. 25, when special matinees of the regular pictures will be given in the two Anaheim houses. All of the box office receipts will go to the local committee on unemployment. The owners of the theatres are Citrus Growers at "Open House" M. Eltiste & Co. Will Display New Tractor at Anaheim Store, Friday Night Citrus growers of Orange county, after viewing the gigantic Hallowe'en parade to be held in Anaheim Friday evening, are invited by General Manager August Eltiste of the M. Eltiste and Company to attend the open house to be held the firm's Anaheim store at 312 N. Los Angeles street, where the new model T-20 Tractor will be on display. New Models of Machinery In addition to the McCormick-Decor new tractor, which is constructed specially for orchard work, the firm will have on display current models of other farm machinery. "Southern California, with Orange county in the fore-front, generally is cognized throughout the United States as the leader in advanced methods of producing and marketing citrus and orchard crops," Manager Eltiste said. "This is an accomplishment of what local growers can well be proud. We, too, are proud to introduce at time the latest track-layer that combines in admirable proportion the qualities of ease of handling, short tuning, better traction, lighter impressions on soft or damp soil, and other advantages for cultivation ability. Developed In Orchards "This tractor has been developed ranch in the orchards, and the needed features have been built into it just as the given operators suggested them. Consequently the new tractor comes very near by a custom-built machine for e.g., grower." Daily Agricultural Radio Program Beginning each day at 12 m., continuing 10 minutes, talks of interest to farmers and producers. Plan to Increase Fruit Patrol The Board of Supervisors has under consideration a plan for increasing the fruit patrol force for the county, which was submitted by District Attorney Sam L. Collins, from whose office the patrol operates. He suggested that the salaries of the five patromen be reduced from $200 a month to $175, the county to supply the patrolmen with two cars, thus relieve the patrolmen of the expense of operating their own autos. He said that the patrolmen could then cover twice as much mileage as at present. Mr. Collins has been investigating the idea of equipping the fruit patrol cars with radio receiving sets and said that arrangements could be made with a Los Angeles station to broadcast emergency reports for the patrol, which would greatly increase the efficiency of this organization. New Central Cafe Will Open Soon Tom Callas for 10 years connected with restaurants in Fullerton, and John Bozekes, for six years associated with Anaheim eating places, have leased an L-shaped, two-room arrangement in the Old Bank of Italy building, with entrances on both Los Angeles and Center streets, for a restaurant to be known as the Central Cafe. The two partners both well known in Orange county, this week purchased equipment which was being installed in the new cafe. Date of opening was indefinite Wednesday, but the partners hoped to have the restaurant open for business within a few days. Death of Ira Anderson Ira W. The plan will cover 35 acres and the company has purchased 210 acres where sand strata tests have been completed and pronounced to be satisfactory. It is presumed that the contract went to the Stone & Webster Corporation. While no word has been received in Santa Ana beyond that of the letting of the contract, it is expected at the county seat that construction work will start early in the new year. Dove Hunting Ends October 31 Dove hunting season in Southern California will end at sunset October 31, according to information received from the Division of Fish and Game. Counties affected include Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, Orange, Imperial, Inyo and Mono. From all information that can be gathered the past season has been one of the best dove years sportsmen have experienced in a long time. An official report from Jack Bonz, from the bureau of education and research of the Division of Fish and Game, revealed that "many limits of doves were checked by the wardens throughout the districts of Southern California. A great abundance of these birds were especially evident in the Imperial Valley country. From all reports and appearances this species of upland game bird is on the increase.
