Medal to Mark 200th Birth Year Design Adopted by Washington Bicentennial Commission for 1932 (Correspondence to The Gazette) Washington, D. C. — The official George Washington commemorative medal, to be used in connection with the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the first President in 1932, has been officially selected by the Bicentennial commission. By New York Sculptor The winning design was submitted by Mrs. Laura Gardin Fraser, well-known sculptor, of New York. The front, or the obverse, side features the head of Washington; the reverse side shows a symbolic figure of Liberty and the inscription "Proclaim liberty throughout the land." The medal will be used by the Bicentennial commission as a prize for the winners of oratorical and essay contests in schools and colleges, and it will also be the official reward for meritorious work in connection with the nine months' world-wide celebration of George Washington's birth in 1932. Only contributions of the highest distinction will merit this reward. U. S. Mint Will Make It Mrs. Fraser's design was accepted by some of America's leading sculptors. The winning design was chosen by a special committee of sculptors composed of Daniel Chester French, Herbert Adams, Lorado Taft and A. A. Weinman, and was unanimously approved by the National Commission of Fine Arts. This medal will be produced for the commission by the United States mint under the supervision of Director Grant. Other Famous Medals The selection of Mrs. Fraser's design is her latest achievement as a medallist. Among her other famous medals were... Why Railroaders Lost Their Jobs Unregulated Competition Is the Cause, Says Union Pacific Booster League In the first chapter of 1931, the railroads of the country through sheer necessity of economy very greatly reduced their employee personnel. These persons, according to members of the Union Pacific Employees' Booster League, lost their jobs largely because of severe inroads made in the traffic of the common carrier steam lines through wholly unregulated forms of competition. Purpose of Booster Leagues The Union Pacific employees have formed themselves into booster leagues, the primary object of which is to get business back to the rails and to act. Wild Rabbits Carry Tularemia Disease Be very careful in the handling of wild rabbits, is the warning issued by the state division of fish and game. Many cases of tularemia have recently been reported. This disease which attacks rabbits is also communicable to human beings. A person who handles an infected animal is very apt to contract the disease through the hands. Character of the symptoms include chills, fever, profuse perspiration, sores on hands and fingers, enlarged glands in arms and axilla, and other indications. Persons so affected should seek medical attention immediately. In one case reported, the infected party was going fishing and found a jackrabbit that had been killed by a dog. The rabbit was still warm when picked up and was skinned for crab bait. Latest reports show that the patient is making slow recovery from the disease. According to division officials, if a person will be cautious in handling these animals, the dangers of contracting tularemia are not great. SAMUEL D. PRICE, D. D. Genuinely good people can have a difference of opinion. An argument that will always remain a part of history occurred over John Mark at Pergo in Pamphylia. At that point it became necessary for Paul and Barnabas to proceed into the interior and the handy man of the evangelistic party declined to go with them. Perilous times awaited the determined evangelists as they went forward on this first missionary journey. Many Jewish settlements had been made in Asia Minor owing to a system of colonization developed by Antiochus Epiphanes. A synagogue was easily found in Antioch of Pisidia. There were no less than 10 Antiochs founded by Selucus Nikator and named after his father Antiochus. We need distinguish only between those in Pisidia and Syria. Marked attention was given to the address of Paul on that first Sabbath. Many begged that the visitors tarry with them and repeat the teachings about Jesus Christ being the Messiah on the following Sabbath. This was done and the entire chapter 13 should be read with care for all the details. Meanwhile the Jews saw the import of this new teaching and if it prevailed their long established system would need to be modified, for Paul taught that many items had been fulfilled. Jealousy started persecution and Paul made the declaration that now he was free to turn to the Gentiles, for in his commission at Damascus he had been especially set apart as their ambassador on behalf of Jesus Christ. In proportion as the messages were accepted by the Gentiles, persecution was increased by the Jews and Paul and Barnabas had to depart in order to save their lives, but they went forward rejoicing. Curtailment of railroad transportation not only has the effect of adding to the ranks of the unemployed, but indirectly strikes the pocketbook of every businessman and every citizen. For depositors in Bank of America and other banks, this unique service saves thousands of dollars monthly in interest on funds in transit.
