Old-Timers Flock To County Picnic
(Continued from Page 1)
feasts under the spreading live oak trees were kegs of beer and casks of wine, made in an around Anaheim by the same people who went to these Sunday fetes to drink it.
There was feasting and much of it. After every appetite had been stuffed, the singing sections were formed and songs of the homeland were sung. There was dancing and games, and occasionally an improvised play was given.
Racing for Bridge
There was a bridge between the canyon and Anaheim, and after the picnic, which did not end until dusk, came the race for the bridge.
The first man to arrive would blockade the bridge with his team and wagon, and refused to move until every picnicker had come up and taken a drink from his supply of beer and wine. No one refused, but the crowds of picnickers were always so large that the team and wagon blocked the bridge for some time before every man had had his drink.
Those Old-Timers had no theatres, no moving pictures, and automobiles had not yet been dreamed of. So they had to create their own amusements, and work hard between them. The picnics in Santiago Canyon were one of the chief diversion, when they feasted, sang, danced and indulged in a lot of tom-foolery.

Christian Science Lesson-Sermon
"God" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon, Sunday, in all Christian Science churches, branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass. The Golden Text is from Psalm 118: "God is the Lord, which hath shewed us light."
One of the Bible citations in the Responsive Reading presents the assurance of Isaiah, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in thee."
A Scriptural selection in the Lesson-Sermon includes the words of James, "Draw night to God, and he will draw nigh to you." Another selection presents the promises of the Psalmist: "Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart... My flesh and my heart falleth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."
A correlative passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, states, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfied love."

Taxing Power is Upheld by Board
Property Valued in Millions Will Be Kept On Local Assessment Rolls
Land and buildings valued at millions of dollars, claimed exempt from ordinary property taxes, will be kept on local assessment rolls under a ruling of the State Board of Equalization is announced by H. G. Cattell, Pasadena, a member of the board.
Action By Utilities
Following a decision by the State Supreme court last June, requiring Los Angeles county to return to Morgan Adams, Inc., taxes collected on a building leased to Southern California Telephone Co., a number of public utilities filed reports this year with the State Equalization Board asking that property rented by them be entirely relieved from local taxation.
These claims were protested by county assessors who urged the board to declare that the landlords' interest in the leased property could still be taxed locally notwithstanding the Morgan Adams case. To hold otherwise, the assessors said, would result in large revenue losses to cities and counties throughout the state.
Orange County Affected
A hearing at which eleven utilities and ten counties were represented was held by the board last week. Properties situated in Orange and nine other counties were directly involved.
Practically every county in the state will be affected by the board's ruling, according to Cattell. "Entire elimination from local rolls of properties leased to utilities taxed for state purposes would seriously curtail city and county revenues," he said.
"While the gross receipts tax paid by the utilities to the State is in lieu of all other taxes on their operative prop-
lon, be abandoned save under express judicial authority. As I understand the situation, the courts have not ruled directly on the point."
Kurt Epstein to Open Store in Fullerton
Kurt Epstein, who has been very active in Anaheim business and civic affairs during his residence n Anahem for 20 years, will on July 15 open a women's apparel store in Fullerton, at 109 North Spadra street.
He came to Anaheim about 1910 and was employed in William Falkenstein's store, which he and Joe Spitzer later purchased and operated for several years. They sold the store to Ormsby, Inc., some weeks ago.
Mr. Epstein has been a director of the Chamber of Commerce and also president and director of the Merchants and Manufacturers association, and has been tireless in his efforts in the civic and business activities of these organizations. He is also prominent in the Anaheim Lions club.
Stockholders Win An Important Suit
In a suit brought by Dudley Chandler and Glen Behymer, as trustees against stockholders of the Orange County Bond and Mortgage corporation to recover a demand of $89,431.52 by virtue of the stockholders liability law, Justice of the Peace Chris P. Pann, in the trial of the action, decided in favor of the stockholders and held the stockholders not liable.
In view of the fact that serious contention was being made for the debts of said corporation and that a number of actions against such stockholders on like demands now totaling in excess of $750,000 the decision marks a signal victory for the stockholders of the Orange County Bond and Mortgage Corporation.
The defending stockholders in this action were represented by the law firm of Sawyer & Sawyer, attorneys for the stockholders' organization.

Older people who have lived through several other panics will not be swayed by the "dinner pall" promises, as they have learned that prosperity does not depend upon which party rules but only on the natural laws of supply and demand. By this time next year nearly everybody expects the country to be enthusiastically on the upgrade and the entire political complexion may return to the flat uninteresting campaigns of former years when the main slogan was "don't rock the boat."
Vincent B. Phelan, of the Department of Commerce, has compiled a book covering the subject of repairs to the home. It is designed to inspire homeowners out of work to fix up their homes during the enforced idleness, or to induce others to give work to the unemployed at a time when they need help the most. The book covers such subjects as bureau drawers that stick, floors that squeak, dock keys that do not fit, repairing the door bell, eliminating the attic, preventing the frosting of window panes and painting inside and outside.

"While the gross receipts tax paid by the utilities to the State is in lieu of all other taxes on their operative property, our board is not prepared to hold that the owner of property leased to a utility should pay no local taxes whatever on his interest in the premises.
"We cannot believe that the Supreme Court intended its decision to have such an effect. This system of taxation has been enforced in California since 1910 and until recently no one ever claimed that property rented by a utility ought not to be assessed to the owner for local taxes.
"A precedent of such long standing and such obvious advantage to the common taxpayer, whose burden will be increased if this property is dropped from local rolls, should not, in my opinion,

NEW KFI Station Nearing Completion
KFI's new broadcasting station, the first in California of 50,000 watt capacity, will inaugurate its service within a day or two at Buena Park. The first broadcast will be made as soon as the engineers can make some adjustments.
The new station has been under construction for several months, its machinery costing $200,000. It is located 18 air miles from the microphones in the Packard building, at Tenth and Hope streets, Los Angeles.
Two towers, each 400 feet high and each topped with red Neon lights, may be seen for 40 miles, and the station has many distinctive features.
The Southern California Edison company has built a special substation upon the property, carrying duplicate lines to protect the transmitter from being put out of commission by accident to one line. Twenty-three hundred volts are run into a giant converter which increases the cycle from 50 to 60.
Every precaution has been taken to protect operators from mishap, possible because of the voltage thrown off by the powerful transmitters, condensers and grid leads. A series of automatic cutouts throws off the power whenever the steel doors are opened, and even after closing them again, a switch must be thrown to turn the power on once more.
Four 50-kilowatt tubes, each taking the place of a former series of five, will provide a smooth, unvarying flow of for all purposes are protected by heavy power. Rectifier tubes and "bottles" for all purposes are protected by heavy steel grills.

Washington, D. C.—President Hoover's trip West for the purpose of addressing the Republican editors of Indiana and making a speech at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial at Springfield, Ill., is being taken by observers here as a preliminary canter to the active work of the presidential campaign next year. Denials that he had any such motive were issued from the White House days before he made the trip, but they were taken here as routine denials.
The facts are that voters are looking farther into the future this year than they have ever done, except perhaps in the days when Bryan was expounding his free silver doctrine three years before he was nominated to run against McKinley in 1896. The same reason for public interest in the national election existed then as now, general depression, both in this and other countries. Voters looked to a political Moses to lead them out of their troubles. Bryan's plan appealed immensely to almost half the voters and he nearly won the election.
There is no question but that Republican leaders realize that the attempts being made by the Democrats right now to blame the country's troubles on the G. O. P. must be answered often and early and Hoover's short swing into states that have been flirting outrageously with his political enemies can have but one real purpose; much as he may attempt to disguise it by speaking on other topics.
Franklin Roosevelt is also lining up his forces, his recent visit to Col. House, which resulted in his gaining the public support of Mayor Curley of Boston and other Bay State politicians who previously had shown a strong liking for Owen D. Young, showing he is in tensively at work. Roosevelt is an astute campaigner and his relationship to Theodore Roosevelt will gain him many votes from Republicans, his supporters claim. That he is not overlooking that angle was demonstrated by Mayor Curley's remark that "it was time we had another Roosevent in the White

The Government has issued a booklet on "Problems of Who Lost: Dry Goods Distribution" that shows that home dressmaking is going out of fashion. More ready-made garments are being worn by women all over the country, the report shows, with the result that the fair sex is better dressed now than ever before. One trouble with the business of selling ready-made garments is that styles disappear so fast that manufacturers have difficulty in avoiding heavy losses. Piece goods are becoming a minor department of the business, the book explains.
Incidentally, another survey uncovered the fact that hosiery sales are greater than those of any other merchandise carried by department stores. Their sales approximate five per cent of the grand total for all lines. Men's
socks run about one-fifth of the total for hosiery, children's hose accounting for less than one per cent.
That chain stores are not running the independent storekeepers out of business is shown by a study made of the census by a Federal Bureau here, which gives the chains only around 17 per cent of the total business. The figures are drawn from a survey of 489 cities over 10,000 population. Analyzing the figures, it was shown that the chains did less business in the smallest cities, gaining as the cities became larger until in Chicago and Los Angeles they accounted for nearly twenty percent. Even these figures do not reflect the actual situation, as it exists for the small store, the survey shows, as filling stations and other lines not reckoned as shopkeeping are included in the chain totals.
