Western Shoe Has New Manager
F. J. Selutts of Los Angeles this week succeeded W. F. Petty as resident manager of the Western Shoe Market. He took over the reins of the local store Monday, and anticipates a continued successful builness.
"Anaheim seems to be a very busy center," he said. "Both my wife and myself like Anaheim very much."
Mr. Petty, who lives on LaPalma street, will remain in this city, he said Tuesday.
NO GRADE LESS THAN "B"
Thomas Kuchel, president-elect of the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences of the University of Southern California, and Howard Livingston, both of Anaheim, rank among the 155 students of the Trojan institution who received no grade less than "B" during the past semester in any subject, according to Theron Clark, registrar, who has completed a comparison of high grade students of the campus colleges of S. C.
Tommy was elected president of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at a meeting Monday night.
Hardie Albright and Dorothy Jordan as the impulsive young sweethearts in the Fox picture, "Young Sinners," which also features Thomas Meighan.
Ramon Novarro in "Daybreak" at Fox
"Daybreak" which opens Sunday, May 24, for two days at the Fox Theatre. Andheim is an intensely interesting presentation of the personality of Ramon Novarro. It presents him as an officer of a Viennese regiment before the war; a gay, dashing adventurer in love. The story delightfully done rises from charming comedy to the very heights of drama. Novarro, as Lieutenant Kasda, is splendidly supported by the talented Helen Chandler and an excellent cast. The short subjects preceding the feature includes a Paramount Sound News, and a Laurel and Hardy Comedy, "Our Wife."
TODAY AND TOMORROW FRANK PARKER STOCKBRIDGE
MONEY
A little boy of ten, on a visit to his grandparents, noticed that his Uncle John never did any work. The boy had never met any grownups who didn't work, and his uncle's inactivity puzzled him. He asked questions and learned that Uncle John didn't have to work because he had money that was working for him. That appealed to the boy. He decided to get money and make it work for him. He got his first money that year, $7 for picking cranberries, and he set that impney to work in a savings bank.
That was in 1850. The boy's name was George Baker. At twenty-one he was already prominent in banking circles. He was twenty-three when he founded the First National Bank of New York. He never did anything all his life but deal in money. He died the other day at the age of 91, sincerely mourned by every leader in business and finance. He was a great banker and a great man. The greatest thing about him, as I see it, was his singleness of purpose.
The trouble with most of us is that we don't stick.
PROHIBITION
Many old people forget, and most young people never knew, that nearly all of the United States had prohibition laws long before the Eighteenth Amendment. I was born in the first of the dry states, Maine. More than thirty states, I believe, were totally dry before 1923, and practically all of the others, under county and township local option, were preponderately dry.
STEFFENS
Lincoln Steffens, born in California made himself one of the two or three greatest reporters in the world more than thirty years ago. He was the first popular writer to expose political corruption and graft in American cities and elsewhere.
He has just written his autobiography. In it he not only tells the fascinating story of his own life experiences, but brings a wise and mature judgment to bear upon social and economic conditions.
I have read no book in years which was so stimulating. Everybody who in the least concerned with the future...

Novarro, as Lieutenant Kasla, is splendidly supported by the talented Helen Chandler and an excellent cast. The short subjects preceding the feature includes a Paramount Sound News, and a Laurel and Hardy Comedy, "Our Wife."
In" Young Sinners," the feature picture for Tuesday and Wednesday, May 26 and 27, Thomas Meighan scores a dramatic comeback, and what a performance he gives in a human drama of a boy and a girl bewildered by their own vital emotions. The picture is considered greater than the staged play, great entertainment, great for everybody, as youth goes on a rampage with Hardy Albright and Dorothy Jordan as the boy and girl in John Blystone's picture from Elmer Harris' stage success that ran a year on Broadway. With this picture will be shown a Metro Dogville comedy, "College Hounds," a Scene, "Tale of Alhambra," and Fox Movietone News.
On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, May 28, 29, 30, Norma Shearer, the star of "Divorcee," will present Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's new starring vehicle "Strangers May Kiss," directed by George Fitzmaurice, from the current Ursaal Parrott's novel. Throughout the picturization of the daring book there is a lavishness that lends pictorial background to the swift action and sparkling dialogue, the scenes switching rapid succession from New York to far flung corners of the earth. Miss Shearer is supported by two of the screen's most popular leading men, Robert Montgomery and Nell Hamilton with a supporting cast particularly brilliant including such favorites as Marjorie Rambeau, Irene Rich, and Conchita Montenegro. The short subjects include a Mickey Mouse Cartoon, "Fiddling Around," a novelty, "Strange as it Seems," and Fox Movietone News.
For the Junior Matinee will be shown the third episode of "The Mystery Trooper" with a special approved feature.

Many old people forget, and most young people never knew, that nearly all of the United States had prohibition laws long before the Eleighteenth Amendment. I was born in the first of the dry states, Maine. More than thirty states, I believe, were totally dry before 1915, and practically all of the others, under county and township local option, were preponderately dry.
I am reminded of this by the celebration on May 1st in Kansas of the fifth anniversary of prohibition in that state. Kansas, the U.S. Prohibition Enforcement Officials report, is still dry. It has a few wet spots; but on the whole is the dryest of all the states. Three gen-

Everybody who is concerned with the future announced a special summer travel rate for school boys and girls, travelling in parties of ten or more with a responsible adult leader. Any youngster who can dig up $122 can go to Europe and back on the Leviathan; $114 on other ships.
This is another long step toward bringing education within the reach of everyone. Nobody can truly claim to be educated who has not travelled around the world enough to understand how other kinds of people than those he grew up with live, talk and think. Everybody does some travelling in these days. The automobile turned out to be one of the most valuable educational influences. Everybody in America knows more about America today than any but a very few knew twenty-five years ago. Many times more Americans know and understand Europe than there are Europeans who know America. We are the world's greatest travellers. And that means best educated people in the world.
POSSESSIONS
The wisest man I know sold his steam yacht recently. "So you're broke, too?" jeered one of his friends at the luncheon table, where he told us about getting rid of the boat.
"No," he replied, "I am trying to set myself free from the tyranny of possessions. I have too many material things to worry about. They take too much time and attention from the realities life. I have decided to bring my children up to realize how many things there are in the world that they can get along without."
See us for luggage that will make your vacation care-free.
