Politically we often disagreed. Personally Nick Longworth had the happy facility of making and keeping friends, regardless of their political or other beliefs. Born to the purple, he was never a snob. At his home, "Rookwood," the stately mansion built by his grandfather on the banks of the Ohio near Cincinnati, he had one of the largest collections of letters and documents relating to the early history and settlement of the Northwest Territory. The first Nicholas Longworth had the idea of establishing great vineyards along the Ohio, which reminded him of the Rhine. He brought German grape culturists and wine-makers from the Rhenish Palatinate, and so established the first German colony in what was then the West. He produced a wine from scuppernong grapes which was the subject of one of Longfellow's best poems. The poet often visited him. Once, Nick told me, his grandfather commented on the similarity of the names "Longworth" and "Longfellow," to which the poet replied with a line from one of Pope's poems: "Worth makes the man, the want of it the fellow." RUSSIA Nobody but a Russian can understand the Russians. Hence, nobody in this country really understands what the Soviet government is trying to do and how it hopes to accomplish it. William C. White, who learned Russian and lived four years among the Russian people in cities and villages, comes nearest to it in his book, "These Russians." Two or three things seem clear after reading this book. One is that the Russian people, much more akin to the Chinese than to any Europeans, place a trifling value on human life. Another is that the rulers who are promoting the "Five-Year-Plan" are trying to make Russia as much like the United States as they can, so far as material progress goes. And another unescapable rolls for a fund to carry their employees over the dull times. The state would not go into the job insurance business under Mr. Filene's plan, but doubtless insurance companies would, and every employer of labor would have to carry it. One result, its author thinks, would be no more business depressions, because the buying power of the mass would never be diminished by reason of unemployment. MAYORS Anton Joseph Cermak, the new Mayor of Chicago, was elected not because he is a Democrat but because the people of Chicago were disgusted with the rule of the political gang which calls itself Republican, and its Mayor, the blatant William Hale Thompson. James Joseph Walker, the suave and personally popular Mayor of New York, is under fire because of revelations of grave corruption in the city's police department and minor courts. Back of Walker is a political gang which calls itself Democratic. Mr. Walker has not yet shown signs of renouncing Tamany Hall and leading the movement to clean up the city. Foolish partisans support incompetent local officials because of the party names attached to the political gangs which control them. Almost the only cities in which there is anything like honest and efficient administration of the people's government are those in which the administrative machinery has been turned over to a non-partisan commission and a City Manager. New York and Chicago will come to that in time. WAR Twenty years ago presumably intelligent Americans were assuring each other that there would never be another great war. Intelligent Europeans never shared American optimism about war's impossibility. They smile at the thought that the "last" war was a "war to end war." They set up the League of Nations, which will act as a deterrent of war until some powerful nation decides to ignore it. And they laugh in their sleeves when anybody suggests that the era of permanent peace has arrived. France is criticized for maintaining an army twice as large as any other in the world. France is building a great wall of fortifications along the German border. Why not? French territory has been invaded by enemies from the North many times in 120 years. If anything like that happened to us, we would have a thousand forts and a million soldiers along the Canadian border. There will be ple excitement in the History Retold by Artist From Mexico Roberto Sliva is Weaving Some of It Into Designs for Orange Show and Fair CHARMS OF CAPITOL CITY Many Delights to Interest Tourists from United States The most historic and most interesting relic in old Mexico is the calendar stone which is generally known as the Aztec stone, although it should be called the Toltec stone, said Roberto Silva, a native of the City of Mexico, and the young artist of Los Angeles who is making Aztec designs for publicity use of the Orange County Valencia Show and Fair. Some of the designs show this ancient stone. The stone is in the National museum in the City of Mexico and all tourists go to see it, as well as the old Sacrifice stone of the Aztecs, which is also in the museum. Carved in Block of Stone The age of the calendar stone is not known, and it was only after prolonged study that modern scientists and astronomers were able to read its method of measuring the years, months and other ideas the makers had of computing the passing of time. The calendar stone was made from one great block of stone. It is a perfect circle, 40 feet across in the widest part, two feet thick, and weighs about 40,000 pounds. Its center piece shows the face of the Toltec Sun God and the concentric circles of symbols surrounding the face not only enabled the Toltecs to measure time, but tells of the Toltec myths of the creation and destructions talled reports reaching the club, and for some time the journey will be one for venturesome drivers only. Much of the country traversed was covered by motor cars for the first time, the members of the club expedition being in truth "trail blazera." Mexico is the first foreign country to be completely traversed by an expedition in the development of the International Pacific Highway. Exploring the region from Mexico City to the Southern boundary of the republic required 68 days to cover the distance of 882 miles. Travel Bureau Girls Form Organization An organization originating in California for the convenience of tourists promises to become nation-wide. This is the Travellarians, composed of young women who work in travel bureau in the state. Recently the first state-wide convention was held in Fresno and it is indicated that other states will organize along similar lines. Thorough study, by personal inspection, of all scenic attractions and sections of the state visited by tourists is one of the principal objectives of this organization of young women. They have been the guests of resort and hotel management in many regions, with the result that they are primed with accurate and detailed information with which to direct the many thousands of tourists who consult the travel bureau. Talking Film of Gigantic Acqueduct Since the viaduct that is to bring water from the Colorado river into the Metropolitan Water district of Southern California is to be the greatest and most costly engineering feat ever undertaking on the West Coast, the Metropolitan board will undertake to give people of the district a distinct idea of the immensity of the enterprise. It is thought that this can best and most clearly be done by a motion and sound picture, which in the next thirty days will be shown in cities and Porto Rico used to be well forested, but now wood is scarce even for home manufacture of simple furniture. Its center piece shows the face of the Toltec Sun God and the concentric circles of symbols surrounding the face not only enabled the Toltecs to measure time, but tells of the Toltec myths of the creation and destructions of the world. The stone was found in 1790 buried in the site of the Teepan or old temple enclosure which before the time of Cortez stood on the site of the present civic center in the heart of the city. Toltecs Had Learning "The Toltecs must have had a higher standard of civilization than did the Aztecs," said Mr. Silva, "or they could not have originated and made the calendar stone. The Toltecs had come into Mexico before the Aztecs. Tradition says they came down from the North, possible from as far north as Alaska. They found several races of Indians in Mexico, among them the Mayans, and inter-marriage with the other races probably marks the beginning of the Toltec race in Mexico. "The slaughter stone is doubtless of Aztec make. When Cortez invaded and won Mexico, he found the slaughter stone in use in the temple of the Aztec war god. In fact, when the soldiers of Cortez were fighting the armies of Montezuma for possession of the City of Mexico, the Spalindards saw the Aztec priests gathered about the stone upon which were stretched prisoners who were to be sacrificed to the war god. The priests sacrificed the prisoners by making incisions and removing their beating hearts. Around the rim of the large circular slaughter stone is a depression or trough with an outlet where the blood of the sacrificial victims flowed away. Charms of City of Mexico The City of Mexico abounds in historic charm for tourists from the United States. A visitor can easily spend a full year in and about the city, with most interesting historic landmarks on every hand. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and has most delightful climate all the year. It is thought that this can best and most clearly be done by a motion and sound picture, which in the next thirty days will be shown in cities and towns in the district, including those of Orange county. "Thirst" will be the title of the talking film. It will graphically show the route of the gigantic acqueduct, from its intake on the Colorado river near upper Parker canyon to its terminus near the 14 cities in the district. Actual scenes along the line of the acqueduct will also be shown. The date for showing the film in Anaheim has not yet been announced. U.S. Department of Agriculture motion picture films were among the first to go on the air in radiovision broadcasts. Chapultepec a Show Place Chapultepec, where Montezuma lived when Cortez arrived, and which has since been made the most imposing palace in North or South America, is only three miles southwest of the city, reached over a broad boulevard. It stands on a towering mount of solid rock, and from its ramparts one can look down upon the clouds spreading over the valley, and on to snow-capped Popocatepetl, where the army of Cortez stopped for sulphur with which to make powder. The castle of Chapultepec was the home of the emperors of Mexico after the time of the Montezuma and it has since been the surburban residence of the Presidents of the Republic. It is a most imposing and beautiful structure in itself and its interior is a show place of priceless treasures, like old tapestries, silverware and other keepsakes, each item of which has a history. Chapultepec was the residence of Charlotte, the queen who went mad upon being banished to Spain, and it was also the home of Diaz, the President who founded the Republic and was at its head for many years. Some Place to Go "Californians who like to travel beyond their own state will find the City of Mexico one of absorbing interest, and a few weeks, several months, a year, or several years will not exhaust the attractions it has to offer to both the transient visitors and the permanent residents," said Mr. Silva.
