John Knox Is New Santa Ana Mayor Realtor John Knox, elected to the Santa Ana city council a week ago, has by that body been chosen as mayor of the county seat, to succeed Frank L. Purinton, who was defeated for re-election. The change in the administration was made by the council Monday night, the new mayor at once going into office and declaring the municipal officials would develop some new policies, but without hinting what they would be. Neither was there any sign from the council as to what will be done about appointive offices, although there has been considerable speculation as to the future of City Engineer Jenkins and Purchasing Agent Banks. Mayor Knox announced the appointment of J. L. McBride to the Water and Sewer committee; Police, E. G. Warner; Fire, Paul Witmer; Streets, A. C. Hasenjaeger. As Mayor Purinton retired from office, he sang his "swan song," in the form of a written statement, in which he emphasized important problems facing the new administration. Former Councilman Stanley Goode, who did not seek re-election, also stressed important administrative steps, which face the new municipal government body chief. Among the problems of the city and county, Goode said, is the solution of the water situation. Former City Attorney Swanner made way for his successor, Clyde Downing. Chief of Police Howard, City Clerk Vegely, City Judge Mitchell and City Treasurer Esau also assumed office today. The resignation of Capt. Elliott of the police department was received and accepted. Reports were that Jesse Buckles, former deputy sheriff, now a member of the Huntington Beach police Edison Co. Ready For Low Water Steam Plant Capacity Assures Power for All Purposes In Southland Increased steam plant capacity of the Southern California Edison Company, Ltd., together with the increase of 199,689 acre feet in water storage capacity since 1924, enables the company to meet the exigencies of a low water year with complete assurance of adequate power for all purposes, says R. H. Ballard, president of the Edison company. Insofar as the company's operations are concerned, he said, there virtually is no basis for comparison between the present and the year 1924, the season of least rainfall in the recent history of California. Program of Development "Conditions with the Edison company have changed materially since 1924, when it was necessary to ration power." Mr. Ballard said. "And as a result of these changes, affecting both our hydroelectric and steam generating facilities, our system now is entirely capable of furnishing not only our own consumers' full requirements, but also the full demand of other distributing agencies to which we supply power wholesale, such as the city of Los Angeles." Since 1924 the Edison company has carried out a virtually continuous program of development of generating facilities, both hydro-electric and steam. Additions of hydro capacity in the Big Creek-San Joaquin River area total 280,000 horsepower, while 460,000 horsepower of new steam generating capacity has been added in our Long Beach station, thus maintaining a balance of combined hydro-electric and steam-electric capacity.
