TODAY AND TOMORROW FRANK PARKER STOCKBRIDGE
PARACHUTES
The tragic death of Knute Rockne, the world's most famous football coach, in an airplane accident, brings sharply to the front the question of the safety of passengers in commercial air navigation.
The Federal laws requiring every passenger-carrying ship or boat to provide life preservers for every passenger are rigidly enforced. There is just as sound reason for compulsory legislation requiring a parachute for every passenger on an interstate airplane. Doubtless the transportation companies will protest at the suggestion of carrying more weight. Commercial enterprises are prone to put profits ahead of human lives. But if they kill a few more Rockne, whose lives could have been saved by parachutes, as seems to be true in this case they will have neither passengers nor profits.
MICHELSON
"My last great experiment" is what Prof. Albert A. Michelson called his latest effort to accurate measurement of the speed of light when he left his laboratory, ill at the age of 79. The world's greatest experimental scientist was past 70 when he devised the method of setting up revolving mirrors on top of two California mountains, 22 miles apart, and by means of very delicate electrical devices measured the time that it took a beam of light to travel from one mirror to the other. The figure which he arrived at, 180.213 miles a second, has been accentuated.
Highway Patrolmen Now Give First Aid
Motorcycle Officers Carry Kits and Have Been Trained to Service
Sometime ago the Statistics and Research Bureau of the California Highway Patrol rendered a report showing the imperative need of carefully handling injured persons, victims of automobile accidents, when removing them from the scene of an accident. It was pointed out that occasionally a person slightly injured suffered serious complications of his injuries when improperly moved by those rendering aid.
Some Incidents Cited
Incidents were cited where motorists having suffered simple bone fractures had been hastily moved to a hospital by well-meaning fellow-motorists. In the act of moving the victim, fractured bones have been known to penetrate through the flesh and vital organs causing injuries to the victim far more serious in the end than the original injuries received in the motor vehicle accident.
To offset this condition the California Highway Patrol last year incorporated a special course in first-aid treatment for its officers at its training school. According to General J. J. Borree, Inspector in charge of the school, these men have thoroughly instructed in the care of handling of injured persons. "Their training," said Borree, "includes a knowledge of the use and application of splints, the protection of lacerations, severed arteries, the care of burns, and the use of bandages, compresses tourniquets, antiseptics. Resuscitation from drowning or asphyxiation is also taught."
Carry First Aid Kits
All motorcycle officers of the patrol now carry first-aid kits designed for quick emergency service in highway accidents and also fire extinguishers.

Practically all that has been learned of the physical properties of matter in the past thirty years has been the result of Michelson's research and that of men who got their early training under him. A thousand years from now Michelson's name will be one of the two or three names of men of this era which will be remembered.
PROFITS
The Ford Motor Company's profits for 1930 were $55,000,000, and the company has $300,000,000 in cash resources. The General Motors Corporation earned a profit of $176,922,650 in 1930 and has cash resources of $564,000,000.
The General Motor Corporation paid $9,538,660 in dividends to stockholders, and over $10,000,000 to its employees in bonuses and special stock dividends. Ford paid a higher average scale of wages and no bonuses. All the stock in the Ford Company of America is owned by the Ford family. Mr. Ford bought out all the others so he would not have to consult a board of directors when he wants to make an experiment costing millions of dollars.
He was the pioneer in the industrial policy of steadily reducing the price of the product as the market broadened, and the success of General Motors has been largely based upon following the path first marked out by Henry Ford. He was the first to establish the eight hour day and the five day week in industry, and is now working on a plan for a ten month year for industrial workers, at the same annual rate of pay that they now earn in twelve months.
RADIO
Nearly thirty years ago I was with Marconi when he first successfully established wireless communication across the Atlantic. At that time, the only wave length used was 3,000 meters.
Ten years ago Marconi began to experiment with waves as short as 25 meters and found that they were remarkably free from interference "fading" and static, and could be directed almost as accurately as a beam of light. He predicted, to me in 1927 that the great future development of radio communications would be with short waves.
Now the International Telegraph and Telephone Company...

He predicted, to me in 1927 that the great future development of radio communications would be with short waves.
Now the International Telegraph and Telephone Company announces that, with a transmitter which one can hold in his hand, they have established communication over long distances, with a wave length of only seven meters, which is entirely free from fading and static disturbances. This may prove to be the long heralded achievement which will make radio communication as accurate and reliable as communication by wire.
SMELL
Scientific research has developed the mechanical eye, the mechanical ear and the mechanical sensitiveness to touch. There are electrical and chemical devices which can discriminate between the tastes of different substances. The only one of the five senses which hasn't been reproduced in the laboratories is the sense of smell. Nobody has yet invented a mechanical nose.
Smelling involves a very delicate chemical operation. The nose detects minute traces of chemical substances whose presence cannot be discovered by any other means. There is no odor which cannot be reproduced chemically, but so far science has been baffled in every effort to detect orders by means of any kind of machine or chemical process.
That is not to say that the mechanical nose is an impossibility. As yet, there is no apparent necessity for such a device. Once let the necessity arise, it is better than an even chance that some chemist or electrical engineer will find a way to do the job.
A lot of statesmen would mind making prohibition the same in the next campaign if they could find a satisfactory way of being on both sides of the fence at the same time.
A verse in the Responsive Reading presents the statement of Paul to the Corinthians, "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death."
Among the Scripture selections are the promises of God as revealed to Hosea: "O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.... I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death; O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction."
A correlative passage form "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, says, "Jesus, unchanged physical condition after what seemed to be death was followed by his exaltation above all material conditions; and this exaltation explained his ascension, and revealed unmistakably a probationary and progressive state beyond the grave."
Anaheim Student Wins High Rating
Francis Bushard of Anaheim was recognized as one of the outstanding members of the junior class of the University of Southern California when he was announced as a pledge to Sigma Sigma, junior men's honorary society, at a formal presentation held on the campus.
Twenty men were selected as pledges to the honor group. Selection is based upon participation in university activities and scholarship and the identity of those elected is not known until the time of their announcement at a special all-university assembly.
During his three years at the university, Bushard has made an outstanding record in student activities. He is president of the student body of the College of Pharmacy, is a member of the legislative council, student welfare committee, men's council, Trojan Knights, Trojan Squires, Bachelor's Dip, Skull and Mortar/pharmacy honorary society. He is a member of Phil Delta Chi fraternity. Bushard was graduated from Anaheim Union high school.

new spring dresses but can easily be reproduced by the home dressmaker. The strips to be used for the fagoting are made from bias strips of the material. Cut them twice as wide as you want to allowing a little to turn in at either side. Fold over to make a double strip, baste at the top, blindstitch together firmly and press.
Cut a paper pattern of the shape needed for the cuff several inches longer at the top than needed. Mark lines on this paper where the strips of material should come and make a curved design at the top of the cuff as shown in the sketch.
Baste the strips on the paper, turning the top row in the center to form the circular extension. Use fine buttonhole twist to match the material and work in simple fagoting stitch. This is done by crossing and recrossing the thread between the strips to form a zig-zag line. A small stitch is taken in the band each time and the needle is then passed under the thread of the stitch that has just been taken, thus giving the twisted appearance at the edges.
Crime is Charged To Unemployment
It is when men get out of jobs, when they and their families are hungry, that they turn to crime, said Charles Feeder, editor for a Los Angeles labor paper, when he spoke to about 50 labor leaders and city officials from over Orange county, at K. of P. hall, last Thursday evening. Eliminate poverty he said, and the crime problem will almost solve itself.
"People are hungry in a land, of plenty," he said, "and hunger is driving them to crime."
He said he had spent an hour with Secretary Wilber, of the Department of the Interior, discussing employment at Hoover dam. "Unless conditions at Hoover dam change," he said, "organized labor will oppose any further appriations by congress for constructing the dam."
Feeder said hundreds of men are going to the dam to get work, only to find that there is no work. The Salavation Army, the city of Las Vegas and charity organizations are called upon to help these stranded men, he said.
The speaker urged city officials to reject bids until they find one that will treat labor as he thinks it should be treated, and he made a plea for a five-day or a four-day week, if necessary, that men may be given jobs.
Asks for $53,000 for Plunge of Automobile
Mrs. Eva Schulman has filed suit in Superior court at Santa Ana asking a total of $53,000 for the death of her daughter, Molly, 15 years old, and for permanent injuries to herself. In the suit she charges that an auto driven by Miss Blanch Kaminer, with Ruth' and Marlon Volk, owners of the car, and with Mrs. Schulman and daughter as passengers, plunged into a dip in a La Habra street on January 4. She charges that Miss Kaminer operated the car recklessly, which caused the

Probably because our clothes are longer, and more ample generally, all sorts of open-work arrangements have been revived to give them the needed lightness and airiness. Hence we see eyelids, lace insertions, slashes, slits and tagging which suggest the "peekaboo" fashions of other days.
The tagged sleeve shown in the sketch is an example of this sort of thing. It is copied from one of the

Lost Leg and Sues Autoist for $51,031
Sidney E. Steeley, an Anaheim butcher, was in an auto mishap in Los Angeles, last February, and charges in a complaint filed in Superior Court at Santa Ana that the injuries he received was the cause of the amputation of a leg. He therefore asks that the court award him $51,031.29 against Henry J. Lockett, who, it is charged, struck Steeley while Steeley was standing by his parked car on a street. Lockett is charged with reckless driving.
Steeley asks for $50,000 for the loss of his leg and $1031 for medical expenses, loss of income and for auto damage.
Health experts say that hearty laughter is one of the best preventives of flu. Maybe we had an epidemic this winter was that there were so few things to laugh heartily about.
WOMEN: watch your BOWELS
What should women do to keep their bowels moving freely? A doctor should know the answer. That is why pure Syrup Pepsin is so good for women. It just suits their delicate organism. It is the prescription of an old family doctor who has treated thousands of women patients, and who made a special study of bowel troubles.
It is fine for children, too. They love its taste. Let them have it every time their tongues are coated or their skin is sallow. Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin is made from fresh laxative herbs, pure pepsin and other harmless ingredients.
When you've a sick headache, can't eat, are bilious or sluggish; and at the times when you are most apt to be constipated, take a little of this famous prescription (all drug stores keep it ready in big bottles), and you'll know why Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin is the favorite laxative of over a million women!
