MARY MARS Very La Increase of Births In Orange County 1,348 Born in First Nine Months of This Year Shows Gain Over 1929 California's birth rate is still giving the race suicide theorists something to worry over. Although it increased by five per cent during the first nine months of 1930 over the same period for 1929 the increase was attributable almost entirely to more Mexican births, according to the state department of public health. There were 1,348 children born in Orange county during the nine months of 1930, and 1,457 in that time in 1929. The state total showed 63,482 births in 1930 and 60,383 in 1929. White Race Falls Behind "Falling off of the birth rate has been a matter of concern in the United States for several years," said Dr. Walter M. Dickie, director of the department. "This year the rate increased in California, but it is little consolation, for the white race did not even keep up their proportion of the increase. With 2,000 more white births in 1930 than in 1929, the proportion of these births to the total fell from 76.8 to 75.7 per cent." "The added births occurred most conspicuously in the rural districts of the state, rather than in the large cities." The survey showed a slight reduction in the proportion of births among individuals of the white, Chinese, and Japanese races. The relative numbers of births occurring among Negroes and Indians remained the same, with the Mexican rate heavily increased. UNEMPLOYMENT While the rest of the country is recovering its normal tone quite noticeably, New York City is getting very sorry for itself over the business depression and unemployment. Business isn't any worse in New York than it is anywhere else, and there are no more unemployed, proportionately, than in any other town. But the city newspapers and the public have just got around to taking serious notice and to raising money for the benefit of the unemployed. It has become the fashionable thing for the smart set to attend football games for charity, join unemployment committees and get their names and pictures in the paper. Several million dollars has been raised, with the result that every tramp and drifter in the country is heading for New York as fast as he can go, to get some of the easy money that is being handed out to anybody who can pull a poor face. Not that there isn't unemployment and suffering, too, in New York. It is mostly in cases where illness, old age or sheer incompetence is to blame. I know of many cases where people looking for competent help have been unable to find any really useful persons who didn't have a job. Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. Club, of 215 East Ellsworth St., and their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Howard S. Plans to Phone to Hawaiian Islands First Step Taken to Connect United States With Oriental Countries Sites for short-wave radio stations for telephone service across the Pacific Ocean have been purchased, and construction is scheduled to begin early in 1932. This is the first step in the move of the Bell system to connect the United States with far eastern countries in our bordering on the Pacific. Service will extend first to Hawaii, and this is planned for operation in 1932. Ultimately this radio telephone service will reach across the Pacific to the countries of the Orient. Station Near Dixon The transmitting station is to be located at Dixon, Calif., near Sacramento. A 20-kilowatt transmitter will be installed there which will be similar to those used in the transatlantic telephone service, and will operate on wave lengths between 14 and 44 meters. The antenna will have marked directional characteristics. Other transmitters will be installed as new channels are opened. The receiving station is to be located at Point Reyes, on the coast nortwest of San Francisco. In Hawaii, two thousand miles out on the Pacific Ocean, the Mutual Telephone Company of Honolulu has drawn up an extensive construction program for the opening of radio telephone service with the United States, which is now scheduled for 1932. Hawaiian-Phone Service This new undertaking will further improve the modern telephone systems which serve the four principal islands of the Hawaiian Archipelago, and also provides for the construction of radio transmitting and receiving stations to interconnect the several islands. Execution of the powerful radio units necessary to establish commercial telephone service with over twenty million telephones in the United States is one of its outstanding features. The Hawaiian Islands already have horizontally modern telephone stations. KUCHEL-ULVESTED BETROTHAL The betrothal of Miss Geneva Elvested to Theodore D. MARY MARSHALL'S Very Latest Jus. at present we are confronted with a wide variety of pleats. One night speak of a revival of pleats if it were not that we have had pleats of one sort or another with us for so long. The new pleats are different, though the underlying principle of the thing remains the same. One thing that has worked for the importance of the pleat at present is the revival of the Greek idea in dress. Retrenchment Urged To Aid Taxpyaers Retrenchment in governmental expenditures, in proportion to economies forced upon private business by prevailing economic conditions, was urged today in a New Year's message by Samuel K. Rindge, president of the California Taxation Improvement Association, a state-wide organization with headquarters in Los Angeles. "This retrenchment may not show in the budget totals of various units of government," said Mr. Rindge, "but it is to be hoped that such economies as the market now affords will be noted in the values-received for the tax dollar."
