Green Stamps Dedication of New Home of Citrus Tire Company Tomorrow will mark the occasion of the grand opening of the beautiful new super-service station of the Citrus Tire company at 252 North Los Angeles street one of the most ornate and complete 'one-stop' establishments to be found anywhere in Orange county. According to George Littlefield, manager of the new Anaheim store, arrangements have been completed to make tomorrow's opening a gala occasion, with hundreds of valuable prizes contributed by leading Anaheim business houses given away to every customer on the opening day, and a large number of opening day "specials" that will make possible real savings for the thrifty motorist. Old Mission Style The building is patterned after the Old Mission style of architecture and was constructed by Samuel Kraemer, Sr. The architect was Allen Ruoff. Edward P. Backs represented Mr. Kraemer during the progress of construction of this beautiful edifice, which will be dedicated on Saturday to the service of Anaheim truck and passenger car operators and which is a type of structure of which this community may well be proud. For months men have been at work on the erection of this new home of the Citrus Tire company in Anaheim," Mr. Littlefield states, "and now it is done and ready for the critical inspection of our thousands of friends and well-wishers in this community. On Saturday we will hold our formal opening and we invite everybody to come and take part in the opening day festivities which will be carried on all day, from 7:00 A.M. until midnight. In design we have tried to make this new establishment in keeping with the high standards of the community and in equipment and facilities we have spared nothing in order to make it one of the finest 'one-stop' establishments to be found anywhere. "The big display room is floored with Goodyear rubber tiling in soft brown tone. Here one finds the offices of the company, and numerous display racks replete with stocks of Goodyear tires and tubes and various lines of nationally-known automotive accessories. In addition, there are ample storage facilities to accommodate mammoth Goodyear stocks of both passenger car and truck tires and tubes. "The battery department is up-to-the-minute. Here one will find complete..." "Father of His Country" May Never Have Heard of California Two Portraits of George Washington by REMBRANDT PEELE by GILBERT STUART THE WASHINGTON MANUSCRIPT GENEALOGY, 1792 But Two Keepsakes of George Washington Are Treasured In Huntington Institutions ONE IS A PEALE PORTRAIT Other Is Own Genealogy Which Washington Wrote When George Washington posed for his portrait before Rembrandt Peale The paragraph reads: "Augustine then married Ball, March 6th, 1730, by whom he had Issue George* (note the masterisk) born February 11 (old style) 1732; Betty, born June 20th, 1733; Samuel, born Nov. 16th, 1734; John Augustine, born Jan. 13th, 1735; Charles, May First, 1738; and Mildred, June 21st, 1739; who died Oct. 25th, 1740.—Augustine departed this life April 12th, 1743, age 49 years and was interred at Bridge Creek in the vault of his ancestors." Now President of the United States. The Huntington Library and Art Gallery contains more of such literary and art treasures as these than any other measure house in the world. It can never be excelled because its treasures cannot be duplicated, and this Special to The Anaheim Gazette Washington—The post office department itself is one of its own biggest clients. The department uses about 300 tons of stationery and 160,000,000 envelopes a year, not to mention 5,000,000 sheets of carbon paper and 55,000 quills of oil. It may surprise you but it needn't worry you to find that there is no official "yardstick" in this country; when the forekeeper measures you yard it, however, he does it with accuracy based on the bureau of land survey. It is exactly 39.5 inches long and is kept in a vault at the bureau where manufacturers and dealers measure off the 36 inches for their yard sticks from it. A "arm relief" of a practical sort is being provided produce growers on the next crop. As a result of practice of the product licensing act, every one of the commissioners whom growers have accused for many years of mulching them, is going to be licensed under federal supervision. For the first time, therefore, government assistance is being given the vegetable fruit grower that he will get a fair price and a square deal when he pays to a distant market. Members of the federal farm board would make a good nucleus for anybody's football team. Of the eight men on the board, five weigh over 200 pounds and are about six feet tall, while all of the others except former Gov. McKelvie weighs in at only around 150, but is lean and hard enough, physically, to fit the gridiron role. When Navy Day was celebrated not long ago, many officers of the Navy appeared in civilian clothes while every Army officer in Washington was out in full dress regalia. It was the first time such a contrast had been offered. Furthermore, Walter Bruce Howe and William Galvin, Navy League members who made most of the arrangements for celebration of Navy Day, are both officers in the Army reserve corps. The highest salaried of the 1,244 women In Huntington Institutions ONE IS A PEALE PORTRAIT Other Is Own Genealogy Which Washington Wrote When George Washington posed for his portrait before Rembrandt Peale and wrote the genealogy of the Washington family. California was merely a name for a far-away land, of which nobody but a few Spanish buccaneers had ever heard. The chances are that Washington never uttered the word "California". Yet the Peale portrait, for which he posed, and the genealogy he took time to write while performing the duties of President of the United States, are both in California—in the Huntington Library and Art Gallery at San Marino. There were two distinguished portrait painters named Peale—Charles Wilson Peale, the father, and Rembrandt Peale, his son. This portrait was painted by the son, and it is one of the few portraits for which Washington posed. He is known to have posed once, probably twice, for Gilbert Stewart, and Stewart thereafter used the lifetime portrait he thus obtained as a model for painting scores of copies. Nearly all the Stewarts are copies of the artist's one, or two originals. Because he liked young Peale, Washington posed for him also—uniformed as Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy. This painting, therefore, is a special favorite among Americans, despite the fact that the artist gave the Commander-in-Chief quite a grandmotherly expression. The genealogy was written while Washington on war President. The fact has recently been discovered. It is known that it was written during his term as president, because he says so himself—and, of course, "George Washington couldn't tell a lie." A paragraph from the genealogy, written in his own hand with a goose quill, contains an afterish, referring readers to a note at the bottom of the page, which notes: "Now President of the United States; Betty, born June 20th, 1733; Samuel, born Nov. 16th, 1734; John Augustine, born Jan. 13th, 1735; Charles May First, 1738; and Mildred, June 21st, 1739; who died Oct. It can never be excelled because its treasures cannot be duplicated, and this library and art gallery, with the 207 acres of surrounding grounds, have been deeded in trust for the people of this state forever. At the time of making the deed Mr. Huntington set aside enough securities to maintain this public service institution just as he himself had been maintaining it. MISSIONARY WOMEN MEET The Missionary Society of the First Christian church met with Mrs. C. H. Sawley on West Broadway last Thursday when the following officers were elected: President, Mrs. J. W. I. Shaw; Mrs. J. H. Dougherty, vice-president; Mrs. H. S. Leavitt, secretary; Mrs. Louis Packer, treasurer. The general topic was "The Negro and the Mountaineer." Mrs. W. J. Morgan was program chairman, and Mrs. Pearl McMillan spoke on mission work being done among the negroes of Kentucky. The largest monument left us by the mound builders is located near East St. Louis. It is 100 feet high, 1060 feet long and about 700 feet wide, covering 16 acres. The culture of these Indians is now being carefully studied by our archeologists. Egypt is not the only country that has an interesting history. If the great nations across the Atlantic had expended intelligently for the prevention of war, one-tenth of the money and energy that they expended preparing for it, there probably would have been no European war. No matter what the President's law enforcement committee reports we will put that it won't please both John J. Hashob and Bishop Gennon. Van Gorder at Warren, O.; Mrs. Minnie C. True at Pittsburg, Kan.; Miss Mary H. Cowie, at Boulder, Col.; Mrs. Bernice H. "The lubrication department consists of complete Alemite hi-pressure greasing equipment, and the most completely equipped lubricating pit to be found in this section of the county. This department will be in charge of an Alemite-trained expert and should prove highly popular among those motorists who seek the highest type lubrication that it is possible to secure. "One Stop" Service "The vulcanizing department is completely equipped for modern tire repairing and vulcanizing." Drive-in service is one of the outstanding features of this new 'one-stop' station. In addition to a number of service rooms, there is a large service court large enough to take care of a number of cars and trucks at one time. "The gasoline island is surmounted by exact replica of a Goodyear Zepelin. Rip Grande and Gilmore gasoline will be carried, and Pennzoll, Quaker State, Hi-vis and Shell oils. Alemite greases will be used exclusively in the lubrication department." According to Mr. Littlefield, this new structure is an indication of the faith of officials of the Citrus Tire company in the future sound progress of this favored section of Orange county. Thomas Campbell, "biggest wheat grower in the world," followed the farm board's program by cutting out his spring planting and, since his huge acreage was in the drouth area, made money by doing so, according to Chairman Legge of the farm board. At that, Campbell still had about 2,000 acres planted, he told Legge when he was here recently. Women May Lose Public Office Jobs Every married woman employed in state offices at Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles, would be compelled to give up her position unless she can prove herself to be the head of Thomas Campbell, "biggest wheat grower in the world," followed the farm board's program by cutting out his spring planting and, since his huge acreage was in the drouth area, made money by doing so, according to Chairman Alexander Legge of the farm board. At that, Campbell still had about 9,000 acres planted, he told Legge when he was here recently. Use of short wave radio frequencies to flash market information from markets to agriculture department and farm board stations has been proved highly effective during two years of experimentation with eight radio stations in California according to Commissioner H. A. La Fount of the radio commission. The federal market news service uses only leased land wires. It is now indicated greater speed can be achieved and farmers better served by installation of short-wave radio sets. A local statistician recently wasted his time in discovering that the gum used on the back of the postage stamps turned out at the bureau of printing and engraving in a year could have been made into a tapioca pudding that would have given dessert for one meal to the population of greater New York. He reached this conclusion by figuring how much dextrine is used in the postage stamp gum; since it is a tapioca starch, the resin was easy. Mrs. Mary Babb of Benton county, Ark., widely known in her neighborhood as an artist in weaving coverleits, this year donated a loom to the agriculture department extension worker in the area and agreed to teach a brief school in weaving. Mrs. Babb is anxious that the patterns she has involved be carried on by younger women and not lost to the future. As a result of her offer, nine women from Benton and Washington counties, Ark., were enrolled in the school and are working on their projects. It seems that there is plenty of money in the country, but the trouble is that it doesn't get a move on itself. Women May Lose Public Office Jobs Every married woman employed in state offices at Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles, would be compelled to give up her position unless she can prove herself to be the head of a family, under a bill to be introduced in the 1931 legislature by Assemblyman Dan Emmett of Santa Paula. A married woman's place is in the home, unless she is required to support a family. Emmett contends, declaring that her present employment, especially in public service departments, is one of the causes of unemployment among both men and women who must care a livelihood. It is his belief that enactment of such a law and its subsequent enforcement would greatly alleviate the suffering now resulting from unemployment in California. Most of the married women now in state service are working simply to buy luxuries not possible unless both husband and wife are employed," said Emmett. "Many of them fail to realize that in so doing they are depriving many men who have families to support, as well as young women who must suppor themselves." Chamber of Commerce Helps Unemployment The Chamber of Commerce is making a practical effort to help relieve the unemployment situation in Anaheim by opening an employment bureau which serves as a clearing house which will bring employers and unemployed in direct contact with each other. The bureau is under the general supervision of George W. Reid, secretary of the Chamber, and in the immediate charge of W. H. Aupperle. So far the number of applicants for employment has been considerably in excess of jobs. Owing to the business depression some of the movie stars are going to keep the same husbands they had last winter.
