Copies of the report have been forwarded to the headquarters of the Extension Service in Washington, D.C., and the College of Agriculture, Berkeley. The Orange County Board of Supervisors will also have a copy for their files. During the past year, a total of 405 meetings were participated in by members of the staff, consisting of Harold E. Wahlberg, farm advisor; W. M. Cory and Eric E. Eastman, assistant farm advisors. 20,446 people attended these meetings during the year. The activities consisted largely of demonstration meetings, educational tours, extension schools, institutes, and farm center meetings. According to the report, 3585 farmers called at the office for agricultural information, and 2145 letters were written in response to inquiries. The staff made 1449 farm calls throughout the county at the request of Orange county ranches. CALDWELL LEARNED IN 47 YEARS PRACTICE A physician watched the results of constipation for 47 years, and believed that no matter how careful people are of their health, diet and exercise, constipation will occur from time to time. Of next importance, then, is how to treat it when it comes. Dr. Caldwell always was in favor of getting as close to nature as possible, hence his remedy for constipation, known as Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, is a mild vegetable compound. It can not harm the system and is not habit forming. Syrup Pepsin is pleasant-tasting, and youngsters love it. Dr. Caldwell did not approve of drastic physics and purges. He did not believe they were good for anybody's system. In a practice of 47 years he never saw any reason for their use when Syrup Pepsin will empty the bowels just as promptly. Do not let a day go by without a bowel movement. Do not sit and hope, but go to the nearest druggist and get one of the generous bottles of Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, or write "Syrup Pepsin," Dept. BB, Monticello, Illinois, for free trial bottle. According to the report, 3585 farmers called at the office for agricultural information, and 2145 letters were written in response to inquiries. The staff made 1449 farm calls throughout the county at the request of Orange county ranches. One of the outstanding projects of the extension service is the cost of production study on eight of the important crops of Orange county. The lowering trend of commodity prices in the general wave of business depression experienced this year is compelling the producer to analyze his costs as never before. The extension service is meeting this situation, in fact, has been at it for five years in Orange county, through the eight enterprise cost studies, including oranges, lemons, walnuts, avocados, poultry, chick brooding, lima beans, and honey. Through these studies the producer is finding the factors that influence units costs. He is thus enabled to direct his cultural practices intelligently and to a degree of greater efficiency, thus effecting better margins on the producing end of the business. A few forward looking individuals have lent their valuable cooperation to the service in this fundamental study, but it has been difficult to get a general response. There are now 153 cooperators furnishing detailed cost records each month in the eight studies. This number could well be increased to 369 or more. While in Denmark last summer, the Farm Advisor saw a system of cooperative farm bookkeeping that might well be adopted by local farmers. An itinerant bookkeeper made the rounds twice each month to his 80 or more clients. He kept their cost data and income data up to date and helped each client analyze his own enterprise or group of enterprises. Some farmers would have dairy hogs, and potatoes or poultry, or other crop. The further we go with the cost studies, the more we realize the woof lack of systematic cost data on the vast majority of farms. In most cases the farmer is conducting a guessing contest," says Farm Advisor Wahlberg, in the report. Future extension and farm bureau activities should emphasize more than over the basic factor of success on the farm; namely, farm accounting and analysis. Compiled with efficient marketing, such a program will approach the "farm relief" looked... ANAHEIM GAZETTE T ADS Apartments For Rent FOR RENT: Squier Villa, 201 N. EASTMAN, Assistant Farm Advisor The fiscal year 1930 has just closed for the 4-H Clubs in Orange county. A total profit of $4,229.37 was made by 148 boys and girls completing in the fifteen various projects. The total value of the produce was $9,813.54 and the total expense was $5,583.81. For the first time in several years the vegetable contests proved most profitable. Twenty-eight boys raised $2289.39 worth of vegetables at a cost of $560.25, leaving a profit of $1729.14. Corn was perhaps the leading vegetable grown, with tomatoes as second best. Those who visited the Orange county fair will recall the wide variety of vegetable produce raised by 4-H Club members. Practically every vegetable that grows was raised by one boy or another. The nursery contest was second best financially. The value of the citrus and avocado nursery stock raised and largely budded by 4-H members was $1416.55. The cost of production was $347.68, leaving a profit of $1068.87 for the six boys who completed their records. Beekeeping is always near the top of the projects financially. This year it stood third. Eleven boys completed their projects with a total value of $1769.13. The cost was $921.33, leaving a profit of $847.80. So far as popularity is concerned, the boys favored the vegetable contest, 28 records being completed. Rabbits followed with 23 projects, and egg production with 20. The girls preferred the flower raising contest, with poultry brooding as second choice. Dairy, calves, egg production, pig and sheep feeding and rabbits were also successfully produced by girls. This year marked a greater interest for now from many other sources. A few of the important accomplishments of the year include: citrus and walnut growers school, poultry extension school, avocado growers field day, annual excursion to Citrus Experiment Station, grain growers field day, bankers and farmers economic conference, rural fire demonstrations, regular semi-weekly radio broadcast, greater 4-H project accomplishments, larger cow-testing association, and greater butter-fat production per cow. Peace Officers' Circus Santa Ana, Dec. 12-13 The Peace Officers' Association of Orange County has arranged with Al W. Copeland to produce his famous fivering circus at Santa Ana. He will bring his entire Hollywood studio circus with him and will personally direct it for the two days that it will be here, December 12 and 13, with two shows daily, 2 and 8 p.m. The show will be given at the Union Pasific grounds on East Fourth street at Garfield street, and in a few days Copeland will start the erection of the largest circus ever seen in Orange County. Many celebrities of the screen and the circus world will appear in person and take important parts in the spectacular and gorgeous circus. Among the many prominent public officials of Orange County who were elected on the committee of the Peace Officers' Association, are Frank Purinton, of Santa Ana, who is now in Mexico, and will return especially for the circus, and will head the honorary list; Capt. H. C. Mechan of the Orange County Squad of the California Highway Patrol; John Gregory, past secretary of the Peace Officers' Association; Jesse L. Elliott, W. Hunter Leach, county jailer; James Plerson, chief of police of Fullerton; James Bouldin, chief of police of Anaheim; Sheriff Sam Jennigan of Orange County; Frank Resident Population Of State Hospitals Resident population of the six state hospitals reached a total of 15,132 on November 1, an increase of 86 over the preceding month, according to the state department of institutions. The usual gradual increase caused by the approach of winter was again noted this year, the department said. An excess population of 2,251 was reported, an increase of 37 over last month. Completion of a new unit at Patton added 50 beds to the capacity of that hospital. Two ward buildings housing 120 each are nearing completion at the Mendocino Hospital. Contracts have been let for construction of a unit at Agnews to house in excess of 400 patients. General Lndendorff says there will be another war in 1932 and Germany will be completely annihilated. He must be getting ready to touch some Frenchman for a loan. NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL ESTATE UNDER EXECUTION In the Superior Court of the County of Los Angeles, State of California. HARVEY J. Frank Sergley Wins Support of Friends Frank Sedgley, well known automotive mechanic of Anaheim who has specialized in automobile service during his eight years here, has been more than gratified by the number of friends who have taken their machines to 306 North Los Angeles where he has charge of the repair and service department of the Graham agency. "It certainly pays to give good repair service," Raymond and Snyder, partners who have the Graham agency, said. "The number of people who have complete reliance in Frank Sedgley's work is astounding, and we are more than glad to have him with us." Republican national chairman would get more accomplished if they didn't have to spend so much time denying reports that they are going to resign. A contraption has been invented to milk cows by radio, but judging from the sour notes we get over ours every night we don't think this would be so good.
