FEARN— THE FINEST ELECTRIC REFRIGERATOR EVER BUILT 113 So. L. A. Anaheim George O'Brien Is Real Outdoor Man George O'brien, who protrays the character of "Buck Duane," the only surviving member of the fighting Duanes in "Lsat of the Duanes," Fox Movietone all talking romance of the Southwest, is one of the best known amateurs in the world of sport. He is expert at boxing, having won the light heavyweight championship of the Navy when he was serving during the world war; he has been a member of championship basketball, football, baseball and volleyball, teams, besides being, perhaps the best amateur swimmer in the Pacific Coast. In a 500-yard swimming race, he finished a close second to Duke Kochanamoku when the latter was champion. Besides all these accomplishments, he is a crack shot and few can ride a horse with more dexterity, an assertion that is proved by his performance in "Last of the Duanes," which comes to the Fox Theater for a run beginning next Monday. The story which adapted from Zane Grey's widely read romance of the old Southwest deals with the stirring adventures of a youthful and handsome outlaw, whose only offense was killing the man who shot his father. He meets and falls in love with a beautiful and innocent girl whom he rescues from a band of cattle rustlers and later through the girl's intervention, is restored to good standing in the eyes of the law and his fellow men. Lucile Brown, who makes her talking picture debut in this film, having recently deserted the New York stage, where she starred with Richard Bennett, enacts the leading feminine role. Myrna Loy, well remembered for her performance in "The Black Watch," and Walter McGrall, who played with O'Brien in the "Lone Star Ranger" portray the other featured parts, while the supporting cast is made up of James Bradbury, Jr., Nat Pendleton, Lloyd Ingraham, Frank Campeau, Blanchge Friderici and others. The picture was made directed by Alfred L. Werker, and for the most part was made in the picturesque wide open spaces of Arizona. Ernest Pascal wrote the adaptation and dialog. BOYLE'S NINE DOWNS J AND N Cops First of Three-Game Series by 12-2 Score; Manion's Hurling is Feature Boyle's Bootery booted the hopes of the J and N Shop night baseball squad by the tune of 12-2 in the first of a three-game title playoff series held at the city park Tuesday evening. It was Carl Manion who mangled the hopes of the former city league champions and winner of the first round this year. This expert submarine hurler kept the hits down to four well scattered ones, while his teammates rallied to his excellent work and booted 15 solid ones. After the first two innings the J and N boys didn't have a "look-in." Second game of the series will be played Friday night. Louis Henning — Auto Painting — 200 Sq. Los Angeles St, Phone 51 VERY LATESTS BY MARY MARSHALL It is a dress that we admired the first time we saw it a week or so ago. Coming as it did from one of the smartest sports wear shops it never occurred to us that it could be copied by the home dressmaker. And then, examining it a little more closely, we realized that it was precisely the sort of dress that the home dressmaker could copy to perfection—that is, the home dressmaker who knows how to use a crochet needle. The dress is of lightweight beige wool jersey—an admirable material for the seaside or mountain wardrobe. It is made with a slightly gored skirt and a simple slip-on blouse with long sleeves that are fulled a little at the cuffs. But in place of cuffs the sleeves are finished with a band of crocheting, which is also used to make the collar and the long girdle knotted at one side. Brown, beige, yellow and orange were the colors chosen for the wool, with the colors repeated in the tassels at the end of the girdle. The neckline of the blouse was finished with a narrow hem and the first row of crocheting was worked over this narrow hem. A stiletto may be used to make the holes for this first row. They should be made at regular intervals about three-quarters of an inch apart. First take a stitch through the first hole, then chain three or four and then go into the next hole. The number of chain stitches will depend on the thickness of the wool and the crochet hook used. This first row of crocheting is taken with brown. The next—which should be done in double crochet stitch—is of beige, then follows a double crochet of yellow and finally a row of single crochet in orange. The same method is pursued in making the cuffs; and the sash is made by beginning with single crochet stitches in brown with rows of double crochet in yellow, blue and orange. Henderson Return From Northern Trip Dr. and Mrs. M. M. Henderson and their son, Leland, returned this week from an extended vacation spent motorizing in the Pacific northwest. The trio stopped at Redding to visit friends, then went to Diamond Lake where thunderstorms and cold weather left their imprint, then on to Medford, Grant's Pass and down the Redwood Highway. Engagement Announced The engagement of Miss Alice Genevieve Strodthoff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto W. Strodthoff of 1933 Virginia Road, Los Angeles, and William Wendell Rhodes, son of Mrs. W. P. Rhodes also of Los Angeles, was announced recently. The marriage will occur on the 20th inst., in the church of the Messiah in that city. A number of delightful social affairs have been given in her honor among them a bridge luncheon and trousseau shower by Miss Dorothy Yungbluth at her home in this city on August 28th. The beautiful Yungbluth home was decorated in lavender and yellow for the occasion. After the one o'clock luncheon, bridge was played until later when the beautiful gifts, all designed for the bride's trousseau were presented to her. More than forty were invited. Miss Dorothy Yungbluth and Miss Geraldine Strodthoff are to be brides maids and Miss Bernice Strodthoff, sister of the bride will be maid-of-honor. Miss Strodthoff is the grand-daughter of Mrs. Strodthoff, Pioneer of this city, who passed away several years ago, and has many friends in this city who wish her and Mr. Rhodes much happiness.
