The quartet has appeared over many radio stations, and last year sang here under the name of "The White King Quartet." The program for the concert, designed to appeal to all music lovers, contained a number of solos, duets, and groups of popular and semi-class songs. "Charles," one can imagine Mrs. Lindbergh saying, "Junior is crying again. You'd better get up and fly him to Bolivia and back!" Respect for Law Is Urged by Anderson Rev. Mr. W. O. Anderson, pastor of the Long Beach Baptist church, insisted that respect for law, and obedience to customs which are designed to protect all the people, should be taught from childhood, in his speech before the Anaheim Klwanis club meeting in the Elks clubhouse Tuesday noon. "A Good American" was Rev. Mr. Anderson's subject. Program Chairman Rudolph Nyboe introduced Mrs. Kate E. McCullah, manager of the Orange County School of Fine Arts, who in turn introduced one of her pupils, Miss Elizabeth Snyder, whose reading was loudly applauded. Charlie Bryan is running for governor of Nebraska again. And he ought to run pretty well this year on account of the drouth. Headline: "A World Without Chicken Wings Is Threatened." O. Well, there'll always be a neck. $54 PER PERSON COUNTY'S COST State Controller's Figures Show Orange County Stands 24th Among 58 Counties With a per capita cost of government of $54.29, based upon its 1930 census, Orange county stands 24th among the 58 counties of California, it was announced recently by state Controller Ray L. Riley. The controller's figures were based upon a compilation just completed of all county disbursements for various governmental purposes. These include general government, such as county offices, courts and board of supervisors; protection to person and property; conservation of health; sanitation and promotion of cleanliness; highways, bridges, etc.; charities and corrections; education, recreation, and payment of interest. Since 1912, county disbursements have mounted at an alarming rate, from $49,766,366.20 to $343,292,671.32. Controller Riley's statement showed. "It is gratifying, however, to note," he said, "that during the past year the rate of increase in the bonded debt for each form of government has slackened considerably, which would indicate that the public has assumed a discriminating manner in connection with bond issues. Public credit, like private, should be a matter of intelligent caution and consideration." Alpine county, with a population of 239, led the state in per capita cost of government, with $272.55 charged against every man, woman and child in the county. Kern county came next with $88.22, and Mariposa third, with $76.31. The three largely-populated counties of the state stood in order: Los Angeles, 37th with $46.89; San Francisco, 8th with $67.33; and Alameda county, 44th with $43.53. The lowest per capita cost of any county in the state was credited to Monterey, with only $29.66 per person. Hardware Thursday, August 21 With our Anniversary Sale. R. "Big Bill" Sylvester, of Santa Ana, candidate for election to the sheriff's office, is making a clean-cut, vigorous campaign for the place which his friends believe he will win when the votes are counted. Sylvester's name will be on the primary ballot next Tuesday. Kindly in his attitude toward all men, strict in his personal adherence to the law, considerate in his dealings with those who take a wholesome interest in the welfare of the county, "Big Bill" is making a strong bid for the office on a platform broad enough to entitle him to favorable consideration of all serious-thinking people, Sylvester's backers declare. Business Success "Big Bill," for many years a successful business man as an executive of the Roehm-Sylvester company, wholesale confectionery supply house, made the following brief statement of his position: "I am not being backed by any ring or clique of people. I have no occasion to make any pre-election promises. If I am elected I will be able to make my own appointments." "I will run the office in a clean, efficient and business-like manner." "My connection with the public in the past 18 years should prove whether I am worthy of consideration as an official." Enforce All Laws "If I am elected I will enforce all the laws without any partiality." "Very little attention has been paid to the narcotic laws in the campaign speeches of candidates. I view the narcotic laws as of equal if not more importance than the eighteenth amendment and will do my utmost to enforce them if I am elected sheriff." Center Street ANAHEIM Anaheim Can Eat What She Pleases Citizens of Anaheim may feel oppressed by state and federal dictums on what they can and cannot drink. But—they are still entitled to manufacture and eat nearly anything they please, just so long as they do not attempt to sell these products outside the city limits. Dr. Walter M. Dickle, director of the state department of public health, has uncovered the interesting information that the county, state, and federal authorities have very little to say about the food habits of California cities. "In this day of nationwide regulation of our personal life, it is interesting to note that municipalities are still almost completely unhampered in their right to prepare and eat what they wish," he said. "The state imposes some restrictions, it is true, such as requiring a certain milk fat content for milk, etc., but it cannot interfere with city ordinances unless they come into direct conflict with these fundamental state laws." The state is in the same way hindered by the federal government if foodstuffs made here are not intended to be sold in other states. Dr. Dickle continued. "The federal government has jurisdiction only over sale of food and drugs which are manufactured in one state and sold in others," the director explained. "This is the reason why we have a state bureau for the enforcement of the Food and Drugs Act, as well as a federal organization for the same purpose." Industry's Effect On Realty Is Told "California Subdivisions," a subject which included a discussion of industries and their effect on real estate, was the topic taken up by Olin Price of Anaheim at the Monday night meeting of the 20-30 club in the Elks clubhouse. In the absence of President Jack Gledhill, who is on vacation, Vice-president Clinton Griggs presided. Dances and vocal numbers by Elizabeth Snyder, with Mrs. C. A. McCullah at the plano, were very well received. California takes care of its own problems, while the federal government is protecting it against impure products shipped from other states. "It would be virtually impossible for the federal inspectors to watch every food product manufactured in California. Intended for sale in other states, if the state inspectors did not cooperate. Likewise, California would be flooded with impure foodstuffs if the federal government did not protect us against its entrance." RE-ELECT Charles D. Brown Incumbent Coronor and Public Administrator OF ORANGE COUNTY Primary Election August 26, 1930 IF you were the proprietor of a large business establishment IF you were the proprietor of a large business establishment divided into departments, each department carrying on work that required skill and training of its employees, and— IF for the betterment of one of the departments a change should become necessary, and— IF you had an employee who had served you in your organization for 12 years, whose work had been satisfactory, who was conscientious and who was familiar with the laws and details of the department. Would You as a business man or woman employ a man to fill that place who was not familiar with that department or any other department of your business? or Would You promote your employee who had made a study of your department? If you believe that your business (it is your business) should be run in a businesslike manner, you then, as employers, should Vote For And Promote Earl R.
