ON THE LOOKOUT in and about Anaheim with Lowell E. Jessen The “ice” age Advent of the iceless refrigerator has produced a paradox at first hard to understand. The more electric and gas refrigerators sold, the more ice is sold by the ice-manufacturing companies! This from no less an authority than L. C. Montgomery, well known official of the Consolidated Ice company. Citing records from his firm’s books, Mr. Montgomery says that the more ice machines disposed of in Anaheim and vicinity, the more ice is demanded by local residents. Instead of a decline of ice sales, there is a substantial increase, particularly in the past two years. Why? Upon analysis the mystery disappears. Advertising, thus educating the people to advantages of refrigeration, is the reason. Allied with this, of course, is the general trend toward more healthful foods and living conditions. Health is one of our greatest assets and anything to promote a healthy mind and body is desired. Because refrigeration materially aids in preservation of food, keeping it in fit condition for human consumption, thus promoting health refrigeration becomes a necessity. The more advertising of refrigeration advantages, then, the more demand for refrigeration. This helps both the manufacturer of iceless refrigerators and manufacturers of ice. Each year future citizens and leaders of the land listen to advice from elders and pass in a line before education authorities to receive a diploma signifying successful completion of standard school requirements. Grammar school children thus become eligible for junior high or high school; and high school lads and lassies secure credits enough to enter college or university. The four-year period of higher education secured at the university has become a necessity, so each year more and more students enter institutions of higher learning to prepare for the fast pace modern civilization has set. For those students who really are specializing in some highly technical work, or preparing to achieve distinction in the educational field, several more years of post graduate study becomes essential. This is quite a contrast to the educational opportunities afforded our fathers and mothers. Even though fast-developing America at that time offered the greatest public education system in the world an eighth grade education was considered very good, and a high school—or academic—education was more unusual than a college education became a decade ago. Going on to college then would compare with securing a Ph.D. now. Mass education in America has focused the attention of the world on us. Certain advantages arise from this system, and then, of course, there are disadvantages eliminated by a system as exemplified by Oxford, where sons of rich men and nobles attend, and where cultural rather than the practical predominate. In America there is opportunity enough for the scholar, and there is greater opportunity for the youth of today who wants to learn how to live, and perform some useful service for his fellow citizen. Graduates of Anaheim Union high school this week stand on a threshold of the greatest opportunity ever afforded in history. The future challenges the best that is in them. Most of the class undoubtedly will go on to college or university, while others will find their nitch in society without pursuing a greater scholastic attainment. One thing remains certain: every graduate of the high school or grammar school has profited thereby. He said in part: "At the present time, important though the field of marketing may be, there is as much need as ever for stressing the efficiency of production, quality of products, and the combination of these with volume of production. "In all considerations of the poultry industry, the rest of the United States must be considered, as California produces less than 4 per cent of all the eggs in the United States and less than 3 per cent of all the chickens raised. This state is a shipper of eggs, so we must not only consider this district but the state and nation as well. "High prices for eggs do not necessarily mean prosperity, nor low prices unprofitableness for the egg producers. If the prices received for eggs are high compared to the things the egg producer must buy, the poultryman is prosperous; if they are low compared with the things he must buy he is not prosperous. Consequently, a comparison of the money prices of eggs and of the money prices of other commodities is of interest and value. The result of this division of the egg price by the price of other commodities is called purchasing power. Upon examining the prices and purchasing power of California eggs it will be found that they have been low since the war." Professor Voorhies pointed out that the purchasing power of eggs has fluctuated up and down in cycles with high points in 1921, 1925 and 1929. This he stated was due to the fluctuations in production. High prices induce poultrymen to increase flocks, thereby breaking the price, and low prices tend- ing to decrease flocks and output, thereby making for better prices. The best way of gaining an insight into probable prices in the future is to watch the sales of young chicks by hatcheries, for upon these sales the production of eggs will to some extent depend. Professor Voorhies told how, four years ago, he suggested this method of predicting future production and consequently future prices and purchasing power for poultrymen, and how it was later taken up by the United States Department of Agriculture and applied to the entire country. On the basis of statistics gathered by this means, there are indications that the price of eggs will be low in the coming year. He said to the poultrymen: "If I were in your place I should not as though prices were to be low."
