"Boom Boom" City Youth Cops Honors
INDIANAPOLIS, June 6—Boys from the "boom-boom" city of Chicago, Illinois, have lots of nerve. Gasoline from the "booming" state of California has lots of power and speed. It was this combination which copped the honors here Decoration Day at America's "Grand Prix" 500-mile racing classic. For fearless, nerveless little Billy Arnold, of Chicago, after leading the field for 198 of the 200 laps, raced first across the finish line with Richfield gasoline in the tank. In addition, his car—a Miller-Hartz Special—was lubricated with Richfield's famous "power partner," Richlube motor oil.
Arnold, the 28-year-old dare-devil, set an average speed of 100.44 miles per hour with his eight-cylinder Miller-Hartz Special, thus exceeding with his big two-place race the average of last year's winner, a one-man 91-inch car.
It was like old times, according to racing followers, what with mechanicians riding with the pilots and Richfield sweeping the boards, the eighth time that Richfield gasoline has powered the Indianapolis winner. This year Richfield won the first five places.
"Shorty" Canton, with his Miller-Schofield Special—a four-cylinder vehicle—copped second place. Louis F. Schneider, with his Bowes Special Straight Eight, won third place. Louis Meyer, last season's champion, was fourth with his 16-cylinder Samson Special. Bill Cummings in a Duesenberg creation was fifth. Like the winner, Cantlon, Schneider, Meyer and Cummings all used Richfield.
Women occupy a wider sphere than formerly, but are doing their best to reduce it.
Engagement Announced
The engagement of Stanley Falkenstein of this city and Miss Hortense Jacobs of Paso Robles was announced on Friday evening at a family dinner party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Falkenstein at which Mrs. Jacobs, Miss Hortense Jacobs, Stanley Falkenstein, Miss Edith Falkenstein and Mr. and Mrs. Falkenstein were present.
Stanley Falkenstein is one of the best known of Anaheim's young men. He is the son of Wm. Falkenstein, who has been in business in this city for more than thirty years. After his graduation from the University at Berkeley, he took post graduate work in Architecture. He was appointed by the government to a position as assistant designer of government buildings and was offered a position in Washington, D.C., which he declined, preferring to remain in San Francisco where he is becoming well known in his chosen profession.
Miss Jacobs is also a graduate of the University, and it was at Berkeley that she and Mr. Falkenstein met. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Jacobs of Paso Robles.
The wedding will occur in the fall and the young couple have the best wishes of many friends in Anaheim and throughout Southern California for a long, happy and prosperous life.
Mrs. J. H. Crane, and her daughter arrived from York, Nebraska, this week and with her husband, who last week took over the lease formerly held by Dutton's Jewelry store, took up residence in the Anaheim Court. Mr. Crane is owner of the Crane Jewelry Store at 115 East Center street.
Mrs. George E. Larsen, wife of a local druggist and a resident at 738 North Lemon street, left last Thursday for Tacoma, Washington, where she will remain for a month's visit with her relatives.
