ON THE LOOKOUT in and about Anaheim with Lowell E. Jessen
Rip's a friendly fellow
Hardly awake after his 20-year slumber, Rip Van Winkle stands at the portals of the tenth annual California Valencia Orange Show and welcomes the tens of thousands of visitors.
Poor old fellow. The fact that he looks different in every exhibit where he is featured doesn't detract from the human side of his life. This sleeping habit, tending even toward sleeping sickness, is felt by most of us mortals, especially on a foggy morning, or just after a severe attack of spring fever.
When he was nagged by his good wife, who seemed to have been a fore-runner of the modern go-getter, we can sympathize with him as he wandered off into the Catskills. Many can attest to the futility of arguing. A walk in the mountains is more pleasant than a walk down a auto-speedway. So let's take a mental stroll with Rip.
Entering the giant tent on the south, we first see Rip carrying a keg of wine. That's in Orange's exhibit. Below him the gnomes are pouring wine out of what appears to be a real old wine keg. Anaheim's exhibit, just to the right, pictures Madame Rip peering sternly out into the horizon looking for her meandering husband. Of course, we understand Madame's purpose, and Rip, too.
Later we discover several places where Rip awakens. In Los Angeles county he seems bewildered by the labyrinth of skyscrapers. In another place he discovers Santa Ana. But every place Rip stands, our heart goes out to the poor old fellow. He now supersedes the Knight of the Open Road and Park Philosopher, especially to those good citizens who have been fortunate enough to visit the gigantic orange show.
the year 1921 when America's sweet tooth was satisfied with 84.47 pounds per person.
Prices of sugar, since we eat so much in the form of sweetening for drinks, desserts, and candy, ranged from the 50-year low of $3.68 per 100 pounds at the refinery, to $25.77 net in 1920.
Color is everything
As soon as women quit the harvest fields and stayed in their homes to look after their offspring, the use of color on their cheeks began. Cleopatra had her special beauty preparations, and our high school girls of today use rouge and lipstick with an abandon that will tone down as young minds become more mature and artistic sense develops.
Women were ahead of men. Before mere man woke up to the fact that color played an important part in his life, women were using it to make him think they were prettier.
Since mere man has awakened to this use of color—which we'll call new because it is being applied to new fields—we see color used in national magazines, color used on ordinary business cards and business stationery to make them stand apart from the proscale forms of the past, and color used extensively in window decorations, neckties and labels.
It has a commercial value hard to conceive, yet easy to understand; color is attention-compelling.
Thus has entered in business a new factor which we must consider. Use of color has just begun. In another five years we'll understand more about harmony of colors and their effects.
Forgers Held For Superior Court
Two asserted "check artists," who are said to have bought printed checks from a man higher up, Monday were held to answer to the superior court from the justice court in Anaheim, on charges of issuing fictitious checks.
Their arrest was made Saturday after one of the men is said to have given Gorman Rogers, manager of the Santa Ana store of the Western Auto Supply company, a fictitious check. Rogers became suspicious and telephoned to the Anaheim police, who made the arrest.
Anaheim then found that the same California real estate handled through in the state, accomplished by the parment.

We like 'em sweet
America revels in "sweet" sentiments, "sweet" music, "sweet" phrases, and "sweet" mamas.
Until a popular brand of cigarettes began "war" on sweets for the commercial purpose of stimulating sales of its tobacco, our thoughts traveled along serenely enough, with little attention paid to the amount of sweet things we had in life.
Saturday I gasped when I learned from a reliable chart that the per capita consumption of sugar in the United States for the year 1929 was 108.50 pounds. Think of it! A family of five devoured 500 pounds of sugar in the allotted 365 days.
But 1929 wasn't the offending year. In 1926 the per capita consumption reached the peak of 109.39 pounds, and the lowest shown on the chart was in two asserted "check artists," who are said to have bought printed checks from a man higher up, Monday were held to answer to the superior court from the justice court in Anaheim, on charges of issuing fictitious checks.
Their arrest was made Saturday after one of the men is said to have given Gorman Rogers, manager of the Santa Ana store of the Western Auto Supply company, a fictitious check. Rogers became suspicious and telephoned to the Anahelm police, who made the arrest.
Anaheim then found that the same men were wanted here on check charges and they were arraigned on the charges. Rogers will not file against the men.
The men gave the names of Carl Swartz, of 617 Garfield street, Santa Ana, and George Van Boran, 1421 Valencia street, Los Angeles.
According to officers, the men bought forms of checks purporting to be the same as used by the Santa Ana Iron works, filled them out and cashed them. The checks, they are said to have reported, they purchased in Los Angeles from another man, for $10 each, the third man being paid his part for making up the printed forms used.
Thirty-five men were indicted in Kentucky the other day for selling bad liquor. The word "bad" in the indictment is superfluous.

REALTY AGENTS SHOW DECREASE
Number in This County Five Hundred Less Than In 1928
California real estate deals can be handled through 51,583 licensed agents in the state, according to a survey just completed by the state real estate department.
Orange county had 1056 licensed realtors last year, compared with 1052 in 1928, the report showed.
A tendency toward a decrease in licenses issued last year was noted by the department. In 1928 there were 50,910 agents, giving 1929 an increase of but 600 over the previous year.
The general drop throughout the state was compensated for by Los Angeles county, which had an increase of more than 3,000 licenses in 1929. Most of the other counties had decreases ranging from one to two, with Alameda county heading this list with a loss of 600.
Five California counties have no need of realtors, judging from the department report. They are Alpine, Amador, Inyo, Mono, and Sierra. The last three named had one agent each in 1928, but all three gave up their licenses in 1929.
"Southern California is the paradise for real estate dealers," declared T. A. Kelly, chief deputy in the department analyzing the report.
"Take Los Angeles county as an example. With 33,510 licenses, more than half the state total is located there. If it were not for the increase of 3,000 there last year we might have had a decrease in the total."
"A more stringent examination last year in 1928 is partly responsible for the small increase. Many agents who could not pass the examination were forced to give up their licenses. This naturally has resulted in some complaint, but our standards are considerably raised."
California has one of the most exacting laws of any state in the Union for those who would sell real estate, Kelly said, and many other states have taken it as a model.

major departments of the factory. About 30 different bottled products from citrus fruits are manufactured with the juices both uncolored and colored, and lacking in citric acid.
From the juice tanks the lemon juice (still following the major raw material) goes to a whirling separator which, at a speed of 13,000 revolutions per minute, throws the lemon oil to the center and thence out of a tiny spout at the top. The rest of the lemon juice goes through another outlet. The lemon oil is clarified and sold. The other juices are used in various bottled drinks.
Similar processes for oranges and grapefruit are followed, with similar results.
Experlenced Men
Mr. Leo, who heads the corporation and Mr. Taylor formerly were sales manager in charge of pectin sales and chief chemist, respectively, for the plants at Corona and Ontario, of the California Fruit Growers Exchange. These two plants are the only other citrus pectin producers in the world. One other pectin plant, not citrus, is located in Kansas.
Following their association at the Ontario plant Mr. Leo and Mr. Taylor joined forces of a nationally-known tooth paste company for a year and then formed Mutual Citrus Products Co., Inc. Mr. Taylor was graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in chemistry.

A more stringent examination last year than in 1928 is partly responsible for the small increase. Many agents who could not pass the examination were forced to give up their licenses. This naturally has resulted in some complaint, but our standards are considerably raised.
California has one of the most exacting laws of any state in the Union for those who would sell real estate, Kelly said, and many other states have taken it as a model.
Although we have had many compliments on our law, I was informed recently that Texas has refused to copy it into their statutes," Kelly stated. "It seems that the subject was under debate in the Texas legislature, when some member arose and shouted. If this is the law they use to run their real estate business in California, we don't want it." That's the first rejection of which I have heard, and I suppose it is the exception that proves we have an excellent law here."
The government is counting all of the radios in the United States. In other words, Uncle Sam is compiling the static statistics.
Mr. Massolini says he has never seen a real practical woman. Don't they go diggers in Italy?
