IMPORTANCE OF PLATE GLASS FIRM LOCATING AT SANTA ANA STRESSED With increasing understanding of the importance to the county of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass company locating a $7,000,000 plant in Santa Ana, citizens of Anaheim and vicinity this week manifested keen interest in plans of the company to proceed with construction work within the next year. Perfection of a patented process for making plate glass is one of the things delaying construction programs, while delay of congress in passing a tariff bill is another factor that will determine to some extent the amount of money to be spent and the time the plant will be started, according to well authenticated reports this week. The company purchased a total of 200 acres of land, including the 80-acre ranch of Walter Nell on the northwest corner of Fairview and Bristol street, and 120 acres from the city of Santa Ana known as the "sewer farm." Purchase was made two months ago by representatives of the company, Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, and prominent officials of the neighboring city. Total purchase price of land is given as $180,000 in cash. The property contains fine deposits of sand which just meet the requirements of the company in making plate glass, it is stated. For several years the firm has considered various sites in Southern California, and for sometime Los Angeles, San Pedro, Long Beach and other cities were bidding for the industrial proposition. Preliminary plans called for expenditure $4,000,000 for ground, plant and equipment, but late rest estimates made since the purchase of the land, place the figure at nearly double that amount. Upwards of 700 men will be employed as soon as the plant is in operation. It is employment of several hundred men, with consequent betterment of employment problems all over the country that is drawing a great deal of attention from districts outside Santa Ana proper. The huge company, largest manufacturers of plate glass in the world, has paint and glass agencies throughout Southern California. B. F. Spencer at 116 West Center street is local agent. Farm Board Activity In response to inquiries from representatives of the press, Chairman Legge of the Federal Farm Board has issued the following statement: "Some objection has developed in the grain trade against the action of the Farm Board in financing farm cooperatives in the purchase of wheat and cotton in the present situation. These activities will continue in the interest of agriculture and business as an emergency measure in the present situation. I have no fear that the cooperatives will not be able to eventually market these purchases satisfactorily. "In connection with these objections I sould like to make this statement as a conservative business man, addressed to the conservative business men of the country. "The country as owl hole was thrown into depression through the collapse of speculation on the New York Stock Market from developing into a panic and has enormously mitigated its effects upon employment and business, including agriculture. "The cooperation of the great employers of the country in holding wages, an therefore the buying power of the public, the action of the railways, the public utilities, the industries, the Federal Government, the states and municipalities in undertaking great programs of construction, are greatly mitigating unemployment and giving protection to the worker and stability to business. These agencies are performing a service of inestimable value which assures our tiding over to an unprecedented rapidity of recovery from what would otherwise have been a most serious crisis. His products and his labor were jeopardized the same as other workers through the currents started in considerable part from the Board is endeavoring aff the farmers' own restore stability after a crisis which create and for whichebble." "The country as owl hole was thrown into depression through the collapse of speculation on the New York Stock Exchange. The action of the President in securing cooperation of the business world absolutely prevented this collapse. "The farmer also was the victim of this collapse. His products and his labor were jeopardized the same as the other workers through the currents started in considerable part from the same cause. The GASOLINE TAX MAY AID CITIES Bill To Be Introduced Giving Towns Portion of It For Street Work A portion of the state three-cent gasoline tax may be used to aid Anaheim in paying and maintaining streets within its borders. If a plan proposed by various California organizations is adopted by the next legislature. Originally conceived by the California Taxation Improvement Association as part of their program to effect lessening of special assessments in cities throughout the state, the idea has been adopted by many other publicity minded organizations. "All interests believe that property owners in city areas should have the benefit of this tax in the construction and maintenance of main traffic arteries," explained Secretary Marvin L. Arnold of the Association, in a letter to the United Press. "It is the only fair plan. Property owners are now bearing the entire cost of city street systems, and confiscatory assessments have been placed on property in many cities for paving work. "Many automobile owners do the majority of their driving within city limits. But their gasoline tax is used solely for building and maintaining roads outside city boundaries." The state legislative committee investigating special street assessment laws was given the entire report on the subject by the Association. Realtors and city officials are said to have joined in recommending this plan to the committee. "The idea is unique and the committee is giving it careful study," said one member while at the capitol recently. If we can determine that this will aid in solving the special assessment evil in this state we will undoubtedly submit it to the legislature in our report as a recommendation for enactment into law." City "Colors Up" For Orange Show Anaheim began to "color up" Thursday. And this bloom of youth is literal. There's no denying that this city is proud of its part in producing Orange county's major crop, and proud of the honor of annually staging the California Valencia Orange Show, which opens its gates a week from today for what promises to be the most successful exhibit ever staged here. Gala-colored buntings, dags and other "dress up" paraphenada went up as by magic Thursday morning. Center, Los Angeles and other streets began to look as colorful as a circus poster, and with the brightening up of the city's atmosphere, the citizenry assumed new vigor, for concrete evidence that the biggest event in the community's yearly program was but a week away, was on every hand. Cleaenrs and Dyers Planning Vacation Cleaners and dyers of Anaheim and vicinity this week contemplated a three-day vacation, beginning Memorial day, May 30, and lasting until Monday, June 2, as a result of favorable discussion leading toward closing of all cleaning establishments in this city on May 31. The question of a three-day vacation will come up for definite decision at the meeting of the Orange County Cleaners and Dyers association which meets in Santa Ana next Monday evening, R. W. Ramsay local member, announced Thursday. Informal discussion of the proposal was unanimously endorsed by individuals attending the meeting last Monday night, but the matter was laid over for final vote next week. This move follows successful experiments in other districts to close on Saturdays between Friday holiday and Sunday. While every seventh person in this country has an automobile, only one in twenty possesses a bathtub, a Western professor reports in alarm. The answer, of course, is easy; one cannot ride in a bathtub. Zane Grey says "no journalist ever became a literary figure of the first rank." Possibly not, though Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe, not to mention Charles Dickens, got pretty close to the top.
