Fruit Exchange Good Advertiser
$1,682,000 Spent on Publicity During the Year 1929
The California Fruit Growers Exchange ranked 40th among the 100 leading national magazine advertisers of 1929 and is the largest advertiser of fresh perishable food products in the United States, according to a statement just issued by W. B. Geissinger, advertising manager of that organization, and based upon a survey just completed.
Almost two-thirds of a million dollars was spent by Sunkist in national magazines last season, out of a total Sunkist appropriation of $1,682,000 to increase the public's preference for California citrus fruits.
The report shows that food products rank second on the list of advertised products, including all branches of industry, with a yearly expenditure reaching approximately 24 million dollars and are only exceeded by the automotive group of advertisers.
Sunkist is rated 40th among the national advertisers of the United States as compared with 98th place in 1925, 80th in 1926 and 62nd in 1928, indicating a steady consistent growth. Florida spent approximately one-seventh the amount of California for advertising their citrus fruits. The next largest California cooperatives invested in magazines approximately $200,000 and $100,000 respectively. The banana importers spent $129,000 in magazines. Sunkist is ranked easily first among all cooperative marketing campaigns, in both newspaper and magazine advertising.
"Twenty-three years ago the California Fruit Growers Exchange inaugurated Sunkist advertising and has kept steadily at it ever since, building up an undeniable preference for California Sunkist citrus fruits which exists today," said W. B. Geissinger, Sunkist advertising manager. "This preference is shown by the consistently higher prices commanded by Sunkist in all markets, a premium which repays many times the investment made in advertising."

Trojan Women To Hold Reunion
Orange County Club and Six Others to Meet Saturday
Members of the Orange County Trojan Women's Club of which Miss Beryl Kennedy of Anaheim is president, will attend a spring reunion of seven Trojan women's clubs to be held Saturday, April 5th, at the Student Union of the University of Southern California.
Luncheon will be preceded by a tour around the campus when alumnae of the university from various communities who have not recently visited the campus will have an opportunity of revisiting collegiate haunts and of renewing undergraduate friendships, in preparation for the semi-Centennial reunion to be held in June, commemorating the fifth anniversary of the university's founding.
Presiding as toastmistress at the luncheon, Miss Margaret Airston, president of the Los Angeles unit of Trojan Women's Clubs, will introduce the speakers. Dr. Mary Sinclair Crawford will discuss the plans and achievements of the Trojan women in an address on "Looking Forward."
Women Councilors of the University will be introduced by Mrs. Rufus von KleinSmid and Mrs. Mary Chaffee Rigins, chairman of the advisory council of the organization and president of the Pasadena unit, will introduce the presidents of the various Trojan Women's Clubs. They include Miss Margaret Airston, Los Angeles; Miss Catherine White, Long Beach; Mrs. Harry Van Cleve, Glendale; Mrs. Marion Foss, Bay City; Miss Beryl Kennedy, Orange County; and Miss Ina Shafer, San Diego.

Farm Advisors to Aid Census Work
Complying with the request of Director William M. Steuart of the Federal Census Bureau, extended through C. W. Warburton, director of extension work in the United States Department of Agriculture, farm advisors of California will lassist in a program of education among the farmers before the census taking activities begin.
Some 60,000 blanks will be distributed among farmers, farm bureau directors, at farm center meetings and at other similar gatherings in the state, where they will be explained in detail. Four forms are being sent to California; the general farm census schedule and special blanks for fruits and nuts, irrigation, and drainage.
In the 42 counties of the state where there are farm advisors, the blanks will be shown and instructions will be given for filling them out, so that when the census enumerator appear there will be no delays or misunderstanding. All t he information given the census bureau is highly confidential and will be used for no other purpose than for a report of agricultural statistics, according to Farm Advisor Wahlberg.
With 136,000 farms in 1925, a number somewhat smaller than at present, it is believed the task of agricultural census taking in California will be a large one. The Agricultural Extension Service, through its farm advisors, plans to lend all possible aid to the census bureau in the enumerating of farm, stock, trees, etc. The Orange State Owned Convict Farm
California's next important penal reform should be a prison farm for San Quentin prison.
Such is the belief of Warden James B. Holohan, who says the problem of providing adequate employment for the thousands of convicts at the prison could be partly solved by a state-owned farm.
"The farm, if named exclusively by convict labor, would be self-supporting," said Holohan. "It should be situated at some place in the state that would not arouse local resentment."
"California has already proved the success o fits prison road camp law. Here, in seven different camps, some ready well under way.
An intensive campaign is in progress to make the eighth annual presentation this year the most notable in the history of the colorful community drama both from the standpoint of hospitality to visitors and perfection of the production itself, according to Poorman.
He states that he plans soon to announce the personnel of expansive committees of leading citizens of the twin cities of Hemet and San Jacinto who will direct the physical details of arranging to play hosts to visitors from all parts of the world who make the pilgrimage to view the outdoor spectacle, which has come to be known as Southern California's historic Oberammergau.
The cast this year will number approximately 200 with prominent citizens of the twin cities, descendants of the pioneers who took part in the actual episodes recounted in the Ramona novel and drama, in principal roles, supported by students and Indians from the Cahulla reservation.
With a very few exceptions, it is expected that the cast of principals will be the same as that of the 1929 presentation, which was hailed as the most successful ever given, both in point of dmestic artistry and attendance. Approximately 30,000 persons in the aggregate viewed the six showings last year.
The play will be amplified this year.

the plaid business.
Lit-chad and comical, they stumble into a host of unproarious experiences culminating in the determination to commit suicide because their fortunes have been lost. How this works out is the comedy high-spot of the production.
Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Kelley, of course add to the difficulties of the droll partners.
"The Cohens and Kellys in Scotland" again unites the original Cohen and Kelly, George Sidney and Charlie Murray who celebrate their reunion by topping all their previous efforts.
Vera Griddon and Kate Price portray the respective wives. E. J. Ratcliffe, William Colvin and Lloyd Whitlock also have important roles.
Christian Science Church
"Unreality" will be the subject of the Lesson-Sermon Sunday in all branches of The Mother Church. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
One of the Scripture selections relates Christ Jesus' parable of the tares and the wheat, concluding with the following verses: "So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest; and in time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn."
A correlative passage from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" contains these words by Mary Baker Eddy: "God, Spirit, alone created all, and called it good. Therefore evil, being good, is unreal, and cannot be the product of God... Only those, who repent of sin and forsake the unreal, can fully understand the unreality of evil."
Some men achieve importance by hard work but others seem able to do it by putting on a pair of spats.
