ON THE LOOKOUT in and about Anaheim with Lowell E. Jessen Communities, in these fast-moving modern times, like progressive business firms, must advertise themselves. This advertising may be secured in many ways, but the type of advertising that leaves a good taste in the visitor's mouth, so to speak, is the kind that sincerely extends to him the hospitality of the city. For instance: Everybody driving along the Valley boulevard into Alhambra cannot help but note the large electric sign welcoming visitors to that city. And even through the motorist continues to drive along that highway to the western exit, there he finds another reminder of Alhambra's welcome—an invitation to return and participate in the city's civic, political, business and climatic welfare. That's the application of Yueltide well-wishing to everyday life which wins and merits the enthusiastic reception given it by visitors. Anaheim might just as well join this comparatively inexpensive method of calling attention to the city's progressive nature. Thousands of motorists daily pass along the coast route between Los Angeles and San Diego. And more thousands speed along the highways transversing the east and west arteries of the community. Large signs judiciously placed along the coast route and other main entrances and exits of Anaheim, especially if illuminated at night and of a type that would command attention in daytime, would carry out the spirit of progress so evident in the city itself. Everybody coming to Anaheim receives from its business men and residents a hearty welcome that leaves a lasting impression. This cordiality could just as well be extended to the motorist passing through the city—and such foresightedness certainly would reflect in the 1940 census. system, is to place the names of the arteries at each intersection so that people not familiar with the particular section of the town might easily find their way to a given address. The soundness of this marking is unquestioned. But right here is where color enters. The ordinary, black and white sign—years ago considered the easiest read of any combination—has not proven exceptionally satisfactory. If there happens to be a light fog, or the time at dusk the sign is not easily read. Even in bright daylight it sometimes is not readily seen. The writer had the pleasure of making a study of this sign color question in co-operation with American Legion men who were planning to select sites and colors for most effective advertising of their city and as landmarks for airplane pilots. The committee making this study came to the same conclusion as the national airplane association recommendations—that black lettering on an orange background was easiest read of all combinations under the majority of circumstances. It seems to this writer that the same principle of air-lane marking applies with equal effectiveness in marking street signs at intersections. Several cities already have adopted this system with increasing success. Since street names must be painted frequently the adoption of a new color combination could be made in Anaheim and applied at no greater expense than the present markings. Counting noses, Uncle Sam's decennial task, occupied Anaheims' attention this week. Results secured from the figures secured within the fortnight will reveal the actual growth, population, condition of employment, industrial progress and other data of this and other cities. Just as Los Angeles is priding herself on her growth in the last decade and priming her citizens to see that everybody and everything in the big metropolis is officially counted for the enlightment of the rest of the country, so is every hamlet or city of Southern California joining wholeheartedly in making the census reveal the true growth and present status of its district. Anaheim's position as trading center for northern Orange county—an achievement that must be jealously guarded by energetic and far-seeking the coast route and other main entrances and exits of Anaheim, especially if illuminated at night and of a type that would command attention in daytime, would carry out the spirit of progres so evident in the city itself. Everybody coming to Anaheim receives from its business men and residents a hearty welcome that leaves a lasting impression. This cordiality could just as well be extended to the motorist passing through the city—and such foresightedness certainly would reflect in the 1940 census. While we're on the subject of signs let's consider the effect of color in relation to visibility. Every city has some method of denoting its streets. The most common Just as Los Angeles is priding herself on her growth in the last decade and priming her citizens to see that everybody and everything in the big metropolis is officially counted for the enlightment of the rest of the country, so is every hamlet or city of Southern California joining wholeheartedly in making the census reveal the true growth and present status of its district. Anaheim's position as trading center for northern Orange county—an achievement that must be jealously guarded by energetic and far-sseeing business and civic leaders—makes it imperative that everybody in the confines of the city co-operate to the fullest extent in making the count a success. The only untoward event of their trip happened yesterday morning near Lordsburg when a large owl blinded by the headlight flew into the windshield with such violence that it was shattered, happily no one was injured by the flying glass.
