Imperial Fair Makes Display Grapefruit, Predominates, but Quakes and Wind Keep People Away George W. Reid drove to El Centro the past week and looked in at the Imperial County fair on Saturday. Mrs. Reid accompanied him. Attendance was good, although earthquakes and unfavorable weather kept many away since the preceding Tuesday when the fair opened. At Brawley Mr. Reid saw evidences of the forty quakes which shook that town on Tuesday. Brick walls were cracked, clocks stopped and there was evidence of no little damage. Streets were roped off and citizens were in an uncertain frame of mind. Wind storms for a couple of days thereafter kept people way from the fair. He found a good display of grapefruit and other products of the valley. Imperial has grown a large lettuce crop but owing to poor markets a wide area is being plowed under. Several hundred pickers were out on strike for a dollar an hour, and growers were in anything but prosperous condition. He was very glad to return home and says the coming orange show will be bigger and better than ever. The motif will be Rip Van Winkle, and Mr. Reid says it will be worth going miles to see. We are betting on George. Jones, of Orange. Following the arraignment, Kerns was returned to the county jail without bail. The preliminary examination was set for 9:30 a.m., March 4. The complaint against Kerns was filed by the district attorney's office, Saturday. The alleged presence of liquor in the car was one of the leading factors toward the issuance of a murder complaint and the district attorney's office will endeavor to prove that Kerns not only was the driver of the death machine, but that he was drunk at the time of the crash. Jones was killed instantly. Kerns and Betty Meeks, the latter of Huntington Beach, other occupants of the machine, were cut and bruised. The doctor who said that you couldn't get exercise by riding in an automobile never tried to climb in and out of a rumble seat.
