Optimistic Note By Newspapermen California Richest State in Union—Getting Richer California, one of the richest states in America, is getting richer. Business is good, and all signs point to continued prosperity in 1930. This optimistic note is sounded by editors all over the state, in reviewing achievements of the old year and outlining plans for 1930. Despite the recent Wall Street crash, the Pacific coast suffered little, and President Hoover's plea to speed up public works has brought about unprecedented activity for this time of year. Proof that California is prosperous may be seen on all sides, says Oakland Tribune. "The way California is forging ahead is revelaed in the totals of individual and cooperation income taxes collected under the federal laws," says that paper. "California ranks eighth in census figures, but now ranks fifth in income tax returns and has moved close to fourth position." Five years ago the California state chamber of commerce made a survey and found the value of manufactured products amounting to one billion five hundred million dollars, recalls E. P. Clarke in the Riverside Press. They set a goal to double the value by 1930. "Announcement is now made that in 1927 this amount reached $2,593,224,000 and it is conservatively estimated that at the present time the three billion dollar goal has been attained. A new goal has been set at five billions by 1935," writes Clarke. Bert Adams in his Livingston Chronicle, rises to demand that the state legislature be given a little credit for the ten million dollar state construction plan announced by Governor Young in connection with President Hoover's plea. Holiday buying was not lower this year but higher, insists the San Francisco Call-Bulletin. "In some lines, it is true," that paper admits, "buying was slower than it might have been. Less caviar was served at some Christmas dinners and pate defols gras was absent from several menus. But there were several hundred thousand more Americans with a few billions more to spend than were at this time last year." "Americans generally are getting richer," points out the San Diego Sun. "Statistics by the national bureau of economic research show that the national income in 1928 was 89½ billions, compared with 29½ billions in 1909. The average income of wage earners and salaried workers increased materially, and relatively more rapidly than any other class." Editor Paul Leake in the Woodland Democrat quotes "General" Jacob S. Coxey as urging the printing of more banknotes and saying: "All the prosperity of the country is in the hands of the Big Five B's—the banker, the bondholder, the broker, the bootlegger and the burglar. "It printing more money were the way to prosperity," observed Leake. "Post-war Europe would have out-prospered America and Russia would have topped us all." Time was when business and industry throughout the country quickly felt any crashes of stock quotations in Wall Street. Said the Long Beach Press-Telegram: "Many will remember the harrowing days of 1907. California perhaps escaped the rigors of that period as lightly as any part of the country. And yet Californians who were here for that experience wouldn't want it repeated." Lyman King, editor of the Redlands Facts, gives newspapers much credit for preventing a more general panic in the recent stock tumble. The newspapers disseminated stories about gathering of the kings of finance and the meeting between President Hoover and secretary Melloh, and the decision to reduce income taxes and extra dividends by great industries, he explains.
